T1-in Towra CLUB is one of the new clubs organized in Whitefish Bay High School this year. It is a chapter of the nationally known Girl Reserves, and the rules and customs of that organization are followed. The membership is divided into squads, with a leader for each group, and she is responsible for the programs throughout the year. The squads and squad leaders during the year were as follows: Social Service, Florence Prinzg Recog- nition Service, Betty Pennington, Personality, Dorothy Billerbeckg Interior Decoration, Margie Stockg Etiquette, Anne Kappesg Collegesfhducational Guidance, Barbara De- Pewg Dates, Lynn Gausling Personality II, Beverly Sperling, Etiquette II, Mildred LeVoyg CollegesgSocial Guidance II, jo Ann McKee. During the year the club sponsored several activities. The first was a leap year dance given October 21, 1935, where the girls did the inviting and the cutting. On December 20, 1955 boxes of cookies and candy, which the girls had made, were taken to the dis- abled at the Soldiers' Home. During the Christmas Holidays the club sponsored a formal charity dance, and the proceeds were used to buy some odd sizes of clothing which had not been donated for the needy citizens of the Bay. The first all girl prom of our school was given April 3, 1936, with a sixteen piece negro orchestra and floor show to provide entertainment. The girls were hostesses to their mothers at a Spring tea in April. Plans for an elaborate Senior Slink-Out dance are made for the week end before graduation. Through these many gatherings and parties, the girls have enlarged their circle of friends and found the true worth of their fellow classmates. 39 Top Row-jack Lindsay, john Schinner Richard Zivney, jack Prescott. john Connell, Earl Netzow, Don Anderson, Bud Huddingtun, Adviser, Mr, Sherman Hirschler. The club consists of twenty-five members who are interested in achievement through edu- cation, service, sports, and social affairs, and activities. Each year the club sponsors two social functions that are open to all members of the school and their guests. This year the Hi-Y club sponsored the Home Coming dance on October 19. A great many of the alumni were present which helped to make it a success. This Springs social activity was a Harlem dance in the school auditorium, with Harlem decorations. Bernie Youngs negro orchestra furnished the music. Every year the club sponsors some definite program of a Social Service nature. This year they joined with the Girls' club in sponsoring the Christmas drive to collect food and clothing for the less fortunate. The two organizations collected many articles and dis- tributed them among the needy of Wliitefisli Bay. Two special meetings were held, at which inspirational talks along the line of clean living. clean speech, and clean sports were given. Mr, V. W. Peterson, Chief Ci man of Wisc'onsin, gave a talk on the Secret Service and different department of justice. Mr. Thomas Pearman, general secretary of the Y. M. C. The president, john Schinner, represented Wliitetiisli Bay High School at the Hi-Y training camp which was held at Camp Minikani on Lake Amy Belle, August 50 and 31. .. 40 .. Once every month the club had a luncheon meeting at which French chatter prevail- ed, followed by an entertaining program to which members contributed French acting, writing, talking, humor, and even temperament. On Shrove Tuesday, which is an important French holiday, the club held a very gay and sparkling Mardi Gras with games, masks, refreshments, and confetti creating fun for all in true French fashion. Some of the members corresponded with students in France and translating the answers proved very interesting. Miss Steidte's room really buzzed with excitement whenever one of the letters from France was received. When the for- eign language department hold its annual singing contest at Christmas time, the French Club won first honors. Groups of the members, feeling very sophisticated, indeed, at- tended French operas, plays, and lectures. The club really succeeded in its original pur- pose which was to stimulate an interest in French. 41 r V ,rf S 4 . .ltr fjb 'bf XNJJ Of ff QW JYQXVVOV X J ll' Wa ,yt v' Swequgylxrthui' Salstein, joe Aldrich, Charles Belik, Fred johnson, Paul Klein, Robert Tung. Perhaps it will not be considered important as a picture book although it is decorated with many indi- vidual likenesses. To some it will be valued for its literary attempts, to others, for its art work. Certainly much time and effort have been expended in these directions. We modestly admit that better annuals have probably been developed but we do believe we have one that is truly representative of our school in every detail. We have striven to de- pict the activities of all groups impartially and faithfully. Through them can be followed the gradual growth of our high school from its beginning, in 1930, towards what we hope will be a magnificent institution. Throughout them we find traced the rapid growth of our student body, the increase in our faculty, and the change in its personnel from year to year, the evolution of our scholastic activities, the growth of our clubs, the development of our music department, the expansion of our interscholastic sports, the introduction of new courses of study, and the development of our school curriculum along the most advanced methods of education-all of these mark the progress of Whitefish Bay High School and therefore are mirrored in THE TOWER. g ,v 47 I I 1 fllrdfgzi Top Row-Charles Belik, jack Lindsay, john Schinner, jack Prescott, Kenneth Lindsay. TOWER TIMES I ALTHOUGH the newspaper, the TOWER TIMES!! was a new undertaking in a different form of writing this year, it has already become a part of school life. An election was held last Fall by the interested students, and a staff was set up for the first issue. This was subject to change in case of incompetence in any of its mem- bers. The first momentous issue came off the press on the unholy day of Halloween, Octo- ber 31, 1935. This first issue was unique in itself as it gave the students exercise in turning the paper upside down to read an article carelessly left in that position by the printer. Not that there weren't other errors where the staff was at fault, but it was the first issue. The second edition went to press three weeks later after ironing out many of the hitches, and thereafter the Times was edited every other week. After the eighth issue, the paper was increased in size to a four column spread, and several new features were added. Among these were the enlarged Bay Window and the humor section, Grins and Gripes edited by Bill Kaestner and jack Lindsay. During the year there were numerous major as well as minor changes in the staff, but with everyone doing his share of the work. Considering the gap that comes between news writing and magazine material, the staff as a whole has done a very commendable piece of work and adjustment. It is the wish of the Seniors that the TOWER TIMESU may ever flourish and increase in size, quality, and circulation. .. 49... Those selected must be of average scholastic standing and will- ing to work in the library. The members of the staff spend one period each day in the library in order to be thoroughly trained in all branches of library work. The work is so divided that the girls who are just beginning are responsible for the shelving of books, care of magazines, and general care of the library, while the more experienced girls aid the librarian at the desk and clip and file articles for reference work. This type of library work is good expe- rience for those interested in library work as a profession. A definite program of study is carried out at the meeting, and instruction is given in general library problems, and library technique. The value of courtesy, tact, and resource- lulness in the library is kept ever before the Student Library Staff. .. 50 f' 'w f,5Pwgf:q'-j.fa. While all the games were lost, the players al- ways managed to keep their spirits up and worked all the harder for the next game. This was indicated in the fact that several games, against larger and more experienced teams were close and hard fought and were lost on the breaks of the game. The opening game against ,County Day School was lost in the closing seconds of play, while the first conference against the veteran Cudahy team was lost on a penalty af- ter the score had been tied. Probably one of the best games ever played on the Whitefish Bay field was with the powerful champions from Wauwatosa, and was lost, by a score of 12-6 on two long runs by Captain jimmy Martin of the champions. The closing game of the season was lost to West Milwaukee by a score of 14-6 after the Blue and Gray had led through the first three-quarters, but again the team with the greater man-power won. BASKETBALL TEAM 0 THE BASKETBALL SEASON this year was one with many reverses and heart breaking games for the followers of the Blue and Gray. Handicapped by the smallness and most inexperienced squad in the conference, it was necessary to experiment with various com- binations before a well organized team could be found. That the team developed throughout the season is shown by the fact that they won the second game from Shorewood by a score of 19-16 and managed to give the rest of their opponents a real battle all of the way. The Country Day game at Whitefish Bay was lost by two points, and the return game at Cudahy was lost in the last minute and a half to play. Probably the most exciting game of the season was the home game with the champions from South Milwaukee in which the Blue and Gray were moved out in the last two minutes of play after playing them on better than even terms all of the way. The majority of the squad was made up of Sophomores and juniors and they gave promise of better things to come in the next few years. TRACK TEAM 0 LOOKING FORWARD to the coming season, the track men have been out from one to five nights a week since late in February getting into shape. A very interesting schedule has been arranged among which falls the State Meet at Rufus King High School and the Suburban Meet at Waukesha. These two meets are being eagerly looked forward to by the boys. The Interclass Meets showed some very promising material with many new boys fill- ing in for the graduates who showed so brilliantly last season. The team of '35 had out- standing material in only a few events while in some events there was no entry. The present team has a greater balance, and points should be scored in practically all events. This year's team has many men who were reliable last season in the dual and triangular meets and who can be depended upon for points in nearly all events in the State and Suburban meets. The future looks very promising because of the great numbers of Fresh- men and Sophomore boys who are trying for places on the team and giving indications of having real ability.
