Jerry Davis drives for the goal as Marty Brown attempts to screen a CBHS defender. Senior Basketball The 1960-61 basketball season will be long remembered. Led by returning senior lettermen John Hillman, Jesse Chapman. Dave Tyree, Marty Brown, and Jerry Davis, the Spartans compiled the most successful record in the school ' s history, winning over 20 games. Key wins over Central and Treadwell highlighted an action filled season. On December 9. while tied for first place in the prep league, we took on powerful Central on our home floor. Before a capacity crowd and a large radio audience we defeated the fast-breaking Warriors by a 53-47 score. Led by big Dave Tyree with 17 and John Hillman with 14, the Spartans gained an early lead and held it by a comfortable margin to the final buzzer. December 13 saw the Spartans beaten by Treadwell, who was then ranked Number One in the state. At half time we enjoyed a narrow 1 point lead. A 3rd quarter Eagle rally, however, erased the Spartan ' s hopes for an upset. Leading the Spartan attack was Marty Brown who poured in 17, John Hillman who tallied 15, and Jesse Chapman with 14. In the Huines game of December 20 we gained an important win when guard Marty Brown sank a last second jump shot from 25 feet out. Two days later, however, we received a dose of our own medicine, when Kingsbury ' s Jerry Wilhite duplicated Brown ' s shot to give the Falcon ' s a 47-45 upset win. In the Memphis University School Christmas Invitational Tournament the Spartans took a preliminary win from Overton 42-31. The following night, in the tournament finals, the Spartans gained the 1st place by defeat- ing Messick 69-52 on a great individual effort by John Hillman with 28 points and fine team play. This brilliant performance by Hillman helped earn him the Most Valuable Player Award. 159
