N QOOH DEDICATED TO Miss Etizabeth Newbell Al va s willing anil always working. Miss Xt-wbell fill? out dailv records. Miss iXeubull ne er misses a moment o{ a tense Spartan game. Dear Miss Newbell. With fondness we wish to dedicate the 1961 SHIELD to you. a teacher at White Station High School. Certainly, we would be sued for libel if we fail to clarify what we mean bv just a teacher. for you are much more than that to us. you are a teacher plus — plus enthusiasm, understanding, and love. Much of vour enthusiasm is channeled through school spirit. Many of us recall the time vour American History class was conveiled to a Spartan Crusade for sportsmanship and spirit. Your interest does not terminate with the football season, however. You are concerned with us as individuals — some- times as happy-go-lucky kids and other times as distressed young people. Your silent but keen observations make you a natural confidant of those who seek vour advice. Many of us are convinced that your innate detection of problems and troubled personalities surpasses even radar. All enthusiasm and interest stem from your love of people. Embedded deep is the root of love which buds in the fall with the freshmen and flowers in the spring with the seniors. For your understanding, for your enthusiasm, for your sense of humor, for your interest, and for your spirit, we thank vou. With love and appreciation. Nobody ' s going to take my lunch! R T PRICE III CENTS Thursday, Soplcmbor 29, 19B0 Frayser Stadjum The Spartan team takes a well deserved time-out to talk over the situation. Senior Football WSHS—13. Frayser—7 The 1960 season was opened by the Spartan team with a victory over Frayser. Despite falling rain the Spar- tans scored twice in the first half and held the Rams for the remainder of the game. In the closing minutes of the first quarter, big Dave Tyree picked up a loose Frayser fumble on the Iatter s five-yard line and lumbered across the goal to chalk up the first Spartan touchdown of the year. Quarterback Donnie Dyer hit end Jimrriy Raines with a pass for the conversion. Our other score came when Dyer recovered fullback Johnny Metz ' s fumble in the Ram end zone. WSHS—0, CBHS—39 On the second outing of the year, the Spartans took on the Brothers from CBHS. perennial state title contend- ers. CBHS scored early and often to spoil the Spartans first chance to defeat one of the Prep League powers. Our only scoring threat came late in the fourth quarter, but time and a tough Brother defense managed to hold us scoreless. WSHS South Side — 40 Hoping to bounce back after our loss to CBHS five days earlier, the Spartans played South Side, one of the state ' s top teams. However, a sterling individual performance by South Side ' s Billy Fletcher stopped the Spartans cold. Again in the closing minutes WSHS ' s drive was stopped short of the goal when time ran out. 151 ' ' DONNIE DYER Back JOHN HARRIS Tackle SANDY STROUD Back JIMMY MITCHELL Back BOBBY DORSEY Back MAX OSTROW Guard Co-Captain NELSON TEAGUE Guard .ygs K WAYNE ERWIN End HUNTER VIA Back JERRY HALE Back 153 WSHS—14, Kingsbury— 7 Paced by fullback Johnny Metz. the Spartans scored twice in the first half. Metz scored first oft a two-yard plunge and again on a twenty-yard aerial from Hunter Via. Both conversion attempts were made good by Spar- tan kicker Sandy Stroud. The remainder of the game was a defensive battle with the big Spartan line, led by Nelson Teague, Dave Tyree, and Max Ostrow, limiting the Falcons to one tally. WSRS—9, Overton— 7 Plagued by rain throughout the game, the Spartans edged tough Overton 9-7. Our first score came on a safety when end Wayne Erwin tackled Overton ' s quarterback in their end zone. After the second half kickoff we drove sixty-live yards, with Johnny Metz going the final distance from the one-yard line. He also added the extra point. The Rebels matched the tally, but that was as far as they could go with WSHS outlasting them for the victory. WSHS—13, Millington—7 The Spartans journeyed to Millington to take the Trojans 13-7 in a game played in sub-freezing weather. We scored first on a three-yard sneak by quarterback Donnie Dyer. Sandy Stroud added the extra point. With the game tied at 7-7 going into the final quarter, halfback Jim Heinz took a 45-yard pass from Donnie Dyer to give us the win. Defensively the Spartans were led by guard Warren Knight and linebacker Ross Doty. WSHS—0. Treadivell—21 The Treadwell Eagles disappointed WSHS homecoming fans by stunning the Spartans 21-0. Our offense couldn ' t penetrate the tough Eagle line, which held us to four first-downs. However, toward the end of the fourth quarter the Spartan offense began to click. Quarterback Dyer completed three straight passes to Wayne Erwin, Dave Tyree, and Hunter Via. respectively. Again time proved too fleeting and the final horn found us on the Eagle nine- yard line. Dave Tyree and Donnie Dyer (10) kill Kingsbury ' s hopes for a first down with a bone-jarring tackle. 154 _!- Spartan tacklers Pat Steele (82), Max Ostrow |66), Johnny Metz (43), and Jerry Hale (37) close in on a doomed Messick ball carrier. WSHS—32, Messick— 18 The highlight of our 1960 season came on this night when we defeated the defending champion Messick. The Panther defense could not contend with our merciless off tackle slants and quarterback sneaks. The first score of the game came on a Spartan drive covering seventy yards in thirteen plays. Fullback Johnny Metz plunged over from the one. Two Messick tallies made the core 13-6 at half time. After intermission the Spartans came roaring back to totally outman our Messick opponents by scoring thirteen points in each of the two final periods. Donnie Dyer started the scoring parade early in the third quarter by going nine yards on a quarterback sneak. Hunter Via set up the next touchdown on a 51-yard sortie to the Messick one-yard line. He then punched it over on the next play. In the final period James Heinz stepped off an eleven-yard tally. Late in the same quarter Donnie Dyer capped a Spartan drive by going around end for the final seventeen yards. Sandy Stroud added two extra points. Following this game, end Dave Tyree was cited as Prep Player of the week. WSHS—13, East— 7 The Spartans scored twice within a four-minute span during the second quarter and from then on held arch rival East to one lone touchdown. Johnny Metz ended a White Station drive by rambling fourteen yards for the first score. Sandy Stroud added the extra point to make it 7-0. Forced to punt, the Mustangs couldn ' t stop the Spar- tans as Donnie Dyer turned right end on a sparkling 28-yard run to paydirt. Sterling defensive performances were turned in by tackles Johnny Lenoir and John Harris, and bv auards Nelson Teasue and Johnny Delius. 155 r i An Overton ball carrier finds himself in trouble as Spartans swarm all around him. WSHS—14, M.U.S.—7 Our last outing of the 1960 season proved unfavorable for the Owls of M.U.S. Although outdone in the statistic department, the Spar- tans took advantage of every Owl miscue to salvage the victory. Our first touchdown came when John Harris blocked an M.U.S. punt on the eleven-yard line. As the ball bounded into the end zone. Harris fell upon it for the score. P.A.T. man Sandy Stroud proved true and upped the score 7-0. Follow- ing an M.U.S. score in the second quarter, the Spartans took the second half kickoff and marched fifty-six yards in eight plavs with Johnny Metz bulling the final two for the winning margin. Stroud again proved un- erring as he converted for the second time. Defensivelv the Spartans were led by center. Dennis Maleug: tackle, Pat Steele; and line- backer. Max Ostrow. At the annual football banquet given No- vember 22. Johnny Metz and Max Ostrow were named co-captains for the 1960 season, having been selected previously by a vote of the entire squad. The Best Back, Best Lineman, and Best Attitude awards, which are given by the White Station Booster Club, were received by Metz. Ostrow. and Jim Heinz, respectively. Several players were selected for various All-Memphis positions. Johnny Metz made first team offense and defense on the Coaches ' All-Memphis. He also made second team of- fense on the COMMERCIAL APPEAL and PRESS-SCIMITAR elevens. Max Ostrow and Dave Tyree were named to the Coaches ' All- Memphis tean at defensive guard and end, respectively. Ostrow, end Pat Steele, and quarterback Donnie Dyer received honorable mention on the COMMERCIAL APPEAL squad. Senior Basketball The 1960-61 basketball season will be long remembered. Led by returning senior lettermen John Hillman, Jesse Chapman. Dave Tyree, Marty Brown, and Jerry Davis, the Spartans compiled the most successful record in the school ' s history, winning over 20 games. Key wins over Central and Treadwell highlighted an action filled season. On December 9. while tied for first place in the prep league, we took on powerful Central on our home floor. Before a capacity crowd and a large radio audience we defeated the fast-breaking Warriors by a 53-47 score. Led by big Dave Tyree with 17 and John Hillman with 14, the Spartans gained an early lead and held it by a comfortable margin to the final buzzer. December 13 saw the Spartans beaten by Treadwell, who was then ranked Number One in the state. At half time we enjoyed a narrow 1 point lead. A 3rd quarter Eagle rally, however, erased the Spartan ' s hopes for an upset. Leading the Spartan attack was Marty Brown who poured in 17, John Hillman who tallied 15, and Jesse Chapman with 14. In the Huines game of December 20 we gained an important win when guard Marty Brown sank a last second jump shot from 25 feet out. Two days later, however, we received a dose of our own medicine, when Kingsbury ' s Jerry Wilhite duplicated Brown ' s shot to give the Falcon ' s a 47-45 upset win. In the Memphis University School Christmas Invitational Tournament the Spartans took a preliminary win from Overton 42-31. The following night, in the tournament finals, the Spartans gained the 1st place by defeat- ing Messick 69-52 on a great individual effort by John Hillman with 28 points and fine team play. White Station lost to the Brothers from CBHS but turned in victories over Frayser and South Side. Despite great shooting performances by John Hillman with 29 and Jesse Chapman with 22. the Spartans could not overcome an early East High lead and fell to the Mustangs 62-57. On consecutive nights we faced the Number 3 and Number 1 teams in the Prep League, succumbing to Central on Thursday night by a 62-55 count and bouncing back on Friday night to defeat the Treadwell Eagles 63-47. A great team effort enabled the Spartans to play the season ' s best game. Paving the way were John Hillman with 20 and Jesse Chapman with L5. Dave Tyree gave a big boost to the cause, gathering 12 points and 13 rebounds. Jerry Davis sparked our team playing a brilliant floor game and netting 12 points. Meeting Kingsburv on our home floor on February 6. the Spartans mounted an early lead and were never headed, winning 58-57. Hillman and Chapman led the Spartan scoring with 20 and 19. respectively. Marty Brown chipped in 11. In the last big game of the Prep League season, we played East High in our gym. The Mustangs, who captured the League championship during the previous week, were an inspired team. Gaining a first half lead, East thwarted our every attempt to catch up and won by a score of 71-57. Outstanding wins came over Treadwell 41-40, Central 50-48, and East 45-43. Because of the large number of boys on the squad, high scoring honors were divided among several members. Worthy of note was Rob Vanatta, who paced the B Team scoring attack through the first half of the season. However, Vanatta was compelled to sit out the second round of play due to an inflammation of a leg vein. During the course of the season the boys gained needed experience which will prove invaluable for next years Prep League campaign. n 1 earn !: cores WSHS 37 WSHS 54 WSHS 24 WSHS. 38 WSHS _ 33 WSHS 28 WSHS 50 WSHS 41 WSHS_ 50 WSHS...... ...37 WSHS 44 WSHS .34 WSHS 32 WSHS. 34 WSHS.. 45 WSHS..... 36 WSHS 41 WSHS 60 WSHS 31 WSHS ....31 WSHS .30 WSHS 54 WSHS... 46 WSHS 48 WSHS 40 WSHS.. 62 WSHS.. 48 WSHS 48 WSHS .....50 Bolton ....42 Germantown 19 Bolton 43 MUS 30 Messick 35 Overton 34 Central . 48 Treadwell 40 Catholic 43 Humes .42 Kini sbury 47 CBC ......36 Frayser ..27 South Side .30 East 43 Tech 23 Messick .42 Camden 32 Overton 47 Central ...55 Treadwell ...32 Catholic 38 Humes 44 Kingsbury 30 CBC 47 Frayser 50 South Side ....61 East 54 Tech 34 M iM • l i 1 ipr M P J Wi f 1 ■• ¥i- MMr r f .. When these difficuhies were finally overcome, Mother Nature frowned upon us with bad weather, making the situation even more iinpossible. Preparations begun as early as spring 1960, howe ver, enabled the staff to meet their deadlines — even if by mad flights to the airport piloted skillfully by Miss Bennett. Karen, Ellen, and Emily fulfilled the tedious job of checking and rechecking senior and faculty data. Are there really four ' Tom Joneses ' ? Lynn asked as she struggled with the class section.
