WHITE STATION HIGH SCHOOL Memphis, Tennessee Volume IV nineteen hundred sixty V ur 1 Q A17 I! It Aix' if Aff iii lVlr. and Mrs. George Tyrceffamiliar and respected figures around the campus- have been a part of the staff of White Station High School for six years. Their sincere interest in students and their sup- port of all school activities have made them favorites of the faculty and student body. A typical day for the Tyrees begins with the arrival of Coach and Airs. Tyree and their son Dave at school. A day of busy activity finds Coach Tyree not only on the track and football fields. but also in the classroom where he teaches Algebra and General Math. Mrs. Tyree spends her day teaching the history of our country and our American way of life. Coach and Mrs. Tyree donit end their day with the final afternoon bell. but continue after hours seeking to improve their effectiveness as teachers and to better our school program. The Tyrees and their son Dave, one of White Stations outstanding juniors enter the front hall to begin their day at Yvhite Station. A SINCERE DEDICATION TO WHITE STATION FAVORITES . . . One day, when the annual staff was trying to find a theme for the 1960 Shield, a pleasant-looking little character walked in and said, uLook, my name's Sparky Spartan. l've been around here for quite a while now, and I think itls time I got a little recognition. Why don't you use me as your theme?', When he told us his story, we decided he was right, and now we'd like to relate it to you. Sparky told us one day he was aimlessly strolling through the campus, coming from nowhere and going nowhere. His attention was attracted by a long line of people, and being a firm believer a line always leads to something desirable, he joined that line. This line led to another, and he found himself proceeding through a series of lines. The first thing he knew he was enrolled in White Sta- tion High School. From that first day, life has been a series of hard- ships for our unfortunate friend. For instance, Sparky often finds himself frustrated by the un- avoidable situation of having so many extracur- ricular activities that his school work is a constant him more than once about concentrating on the wrong figures. And his course load is so heavy that often he finds it difficult to keep sixth period open for roaming the halls. But no matter how busy he is, our be-helmeted pal always manages an opportunity to relax with his friends. In fact, he often gets so relaxed he completely forgets to go to class. interference. His math teacher has had to caution Sparky finds most of his classes fairly tolerable except for physical education. This is extremely dis- tasteful to him because it's run by a coach with a complete inability to stop counting while the class is doing an exercise. But despite all the hardships Sparky has endured since his entrance here, there has been much joy. He likes it here and wants to remain always. And somehow, we of the Shield staff believe that as long as White Station exists, Sparky will be here. For Sparky is more than the meek, confused little Spartan that appears on the pages of this book. These are merely sketches, caricatures of the real Sparky Spartan. There is actually a student who is the embodiment of all the characteristics por- trayed in the figure of this little boy. You say this character doesn't exist? Well, you,re wrong. He does exist. He,s on every page of this book. He's in the jubilation that follows a victorious football or basketball game. He's in the silence that follows defeat. He loafs in the halls, he studies in the library. In fact, he's an active participant in every event here. Who is he? Why, the answer is obvious. He's you, and you, and you. He's every student who has ever attended White Station since its beginning. He's the living, breathing spirit that has made White Station the fine, progressive high school it is and will continue to be. Sparky Spartan is the per- sonification of every student who makes these halls resound with his footsteps. Every day brought more worries about forgotten deadlines, pictures that hadn't been taken, or cartoons that hadn't been drawn. Connie and Mary Beth made friends or permanent enemies of all the teachers and practically tore their hair over failing and withdrawing seniors. Alice and Madolyn were worn to a frazzle taking up subscriptions and writing receipts. Barbara and Karen were ready to give up when their copy sheets had to be re-drawn and typed a second time. By the time the Classes were finished, Susan knew all too well the number of juniors, sophomores, and freshmen onuevery page. Jocelyn and Carmine found out there were clubs, clubs, and more clubs, while Fred, Dick and Bill were busily trying to find the scores for that basketball game with Frayser. Mary Lynn wasn't sure her ears would recover after having sat for literally hours with tele- phone in hand. Margaret and Sherri, by the end of February, were ready for a long-postponed trip to Bolivar. The job couldn,t have been done without the midnight oil burned by our photographers, Rod Phillips, Frank Feagin, Ronnie Swain, Jim Godown, and Bill Hancock. Many thanks go to them. Wilson. TCUSUC- The White Station Spartans opened the 1959 football season with victory over Germantown on September -1. Halfback Don Jacobson paced around end for the first score and fullback Johnny Metz plunged through the line for the second. After leading at the half l2-0 the Spartans came back all fired up and put on another attack in the final seconds of the period. They then scored twice, once on a thrilling run by Jacobson. and again on a touchdown pass to Dave Tyree in the final seconds of play. One week later the Spartans defeated Frayser for the first time in our history, by a score of l2-O. The team attack, led by Bill Nlccrary and Nelson Teague, took advantage of every opportunity to gain yardage and score. With Jacobson and Metz adding six points apiece. we made Frayser our second victim. Our debut at Crump Stadium proved to be very un- fortunate for the Falcons of Kingsbury on September l8. Although hampered by injuries in some key positions. the Spartans edged Kingsbury l2-7. A spectacular lB yard pass from Hunter Via to Dave Tyree accounted for the first score in the opening minutes of play. Full- liack johnny Nletz again proved to be our powerhouse as he clipped off yard after yard in six straight carries. Ile scored the final touchdown in the third quarter as he boomed across the goal from the one. Fans at Hodges Field on September 26 saw the Spar- tans battle long and hard against Tech. The highlight of the game was in the closing seconds of the first half when we threatened on the twenty yard line. Via took a pitch-out from Donnie Dyer and threw to Bob West for the touchdown. QL .iwgi kv adding scores for the Spartans were Heinz on a 75 yard kickoff return and Jacobson on a 35 yard skirt up the middle. A week later the White Station Spartans pulled from behind in the fourth period to tie Treadwell 6-6. After trailing for two quarters, Heinz intercepted a Treadwell pass and paced 29 yards for the tying touchdown. The conversion attempt was wide and so the score remained tied. With Metz and Jacobson doing the heavy work, we marched within scoring distance several times but couldnat manage to hit pay dirt. After intercepting a lateral, Heinz looked like he was going for another touchdown when he was tripped by the only defender between him and the goal. A very cold Friday night, the 5th of November, the Spartans once again showed their strength as they de- feated MUS 26 to 13. The first Spartan score came quickly as halfback Don Jacobson plunged over from the 4 yard line in the first quarter. MUS scored shortly to match this score, but from then on, it was our ball game. Fullback Johnny Metz, on a 10 yard run, added the next six points to our score. We scored again on a pass from Dyer to Tyree to take a two touchdown lead. With Metz adding the final six points, the score ended 26-13. Managers Dale Mahal, Stephen Lang, and Billy Huff gave much time and effort to our team. Homecoming fans saw a fine team effort by the Spar- tans overcome by East High, as the Spartans Went down 21-7. On the very first play from scrimmage, Jacobson ran a reverse around right end for a beautiful 80 yard touchdown, Stroud made it 7-0 with extra point. With East taking advantage of every scoring opportunity, they slowly ran the, score up. Despite the defeat, our defense was spearheaded by such linemen as Bob West, Quinn Mills, Curt Porter, and Danny Graflund. The Spartans started strong and played well during the first half of the season, hut, just as last year, they slowed down during the latter part. The team's season began with road trips to Dyer, Ten- nessee, and Slayden, Mississippi. During the Slayden game Earl Gillespie set a scoring record for Spartan players with 37 points. The Spartans led most of the game, but an East rally tied the score at the end of regulation time. With just seconds left, Fred Robnett made the game-winning basket with a jump shot under the goal. The Spartans also made a very good showing against Treadwell in our own gym. Treadwell was un- beaten in league play and was rated to beat us, but the Spartans played the best offensive game of their season to hold the Eagles to only 36 points, while notch- ing 45 points for themselves. Samuel Joseph Behr died November 6, 1959. He was a boy full of life, ideas, enthusiasm, and interest in journalism, sports and his fellow man. Plans for attending Vanderbilt and a career in medicine were a part of Sam, but to truly describe him, one must remember the little things-Y plans for a better sports pageg plans for bringing up his trig grade, his tremendous interest in Sputnik lVlonroeg his witty outbursts in Quill and Scroll meetings, his way of hitting a person instead of saying hello, his ability to change rapidly from gaiety to seriousness, his wrestling holds, of which he was very proudg his gift for making people laugh, his knowl- edge of anything and everything that was going on. Cheerfulness, friendliness and vitality combined with a daring spirit, bright sense of humor, and observant nature to form Sam Behr. The qualities one admired so in Sam and misses in his absence are not lost. As long as his memory lives in the hearts and minds of those who knew him, Samas spirit lives. taken from an article in the SCROLL, November, 1959 g 2 5 gs Q1 ii 2 3 2 5 5 2 E 2 1 a 3 5 Q as 5 Q 3 K, 1? 3 5 I94 VERTISEMENTS 5 K Q X t ' L.
