FOR A NEW 5 6 11 Underdogs Adapting Well To New Environment Approximately 170 freshmen were welcomed to White River this school year. High school brings many changes, some ol which are not looked forward to. Rushing to find classes on the first day, rude com- ments by upper classmen, or five tardies in the first week are but a few examples. The enthusiasm of fresh- men adds to the great spirit that per- vades the walls of White River. They are supportive and involved in the activities that will enliven the whole of the school year; and without them, who would WE pick on ? 16 FRESHMEN ... I I Getting into the Spirit ol things. What did it take to build White River Spirit? Unity!!! Our school leaders did a great job by arrang- ing activities that involved the whole school. Lip Synch, Car stuffing, and Powderpuff football contests were enjoyed by all. Whether it was spirit, or confu- sion, we were all in it together. 45 % % ALWAYS REMEMBERED SEMOR TIM MEYER MISSING YOU I'm writing this through misty tears for yesterday's sorrow. Although my heart is tom in two for yesterday, I know you will give me strength to make it through today, tomorrow, and always. I miss that silly grin of yours, that never left your face. Those eyes, with that special twinkle that could melt the coldest soul. And those cute little cheeks of yours when you were about to laugh. You made people laugh when they wanted to cry. You helped people live, when they wanted to die. You gave people strength, when they thought there was no hope. You made more people happier in your seventeen years, than most people do in seventy. You gave your heart to people and asked nothing in return. These are the reasons I will miss you most, although there are hundreds more. The judges were faced with a hard decision on choosing a King and Queen. Each judge evaluated the candidates over dinner put on by Students Club. The candidates also had to pre- sent a short autobiography of themselves. Towards the end of the evening each girl ivas given a box containing either a red or yellow rose. The girl that was given the box with the yellow rose would be the new Homecoming Queen. Kim Clinkingbeard opened her box and not only dis- covered she had the yellow rose but also a bouton- niere with Matt Miller's name on it. Everyone was excited! Members man the concession stand during each home football game, and points are earned. Profits go toward making homecoming a special occasion. This year's theme for the Homecoming assembly was 'Glory to Love . Decorations were accomplished with the use ol a picket fence, archways, gable, candelabras, plants, flowers, and the talents of Ted Jenkins. Tina Prieto, Marcie Lewis, and Kim Kimm. The decorations proved to be a beautiful setting for the Homecoming royalty. This year the class of 1962 was honored. A holiday Tolo was not well held on Friday evening, December 12th. Unfortunately this was not well attended by the student body. Those who attended had a very enjoyable evening. A special flower sale for Valentine s Day was held. The profits of this go toward next year's concessions. A candy sale to raise more money for club activities was held in the spring. The awards banquet and installation of officers for 1996-87 was held in May at the school. And that is exactly what the members of Honor Society have done. In fact almost all the members of this elite club have a grade point that greatly exceeds the membership requirements. In addition to the challenge of maintaining their excellent grade points, a lot of these in- dividuals find time to be mem- bers in 1 or 2 other clubs. The increase in membership caused an increase in support vital to a club like this. The club has kept busy with various community services such as the St. Judes highway clean-up in which they competed with Enumclaw tor the most sponsors lor a pizza teed in which the losing team (in this case, Enumclaw) treats the winning club to an all they can eat in pizza. Also, they've helped community senior citizens keep up their yards and are presently working on a child protection program which involves fingerprinting the elementary children and providing to parents Lile-Saver l.D. and emergency tags at no cost. Key Club members get a break Jrom the years activities when members attend a Key Club Convention lor all Key Club mem bers in the Pacific Northwest. The convention is a time for all clubs to reflect on the years accomplishments and plan for the future. There are club competitions which include lip-synces to most outstanding club service. The students had a lot of fun planning and carrying out this activity. A year ago the crowds were immense. This year attendance was very poor thus students were very disap- pointed. We had hoped to have this an annual project. On November 14th a dance was held in the multi purpose room. This proved suc- cessful. Visiting students from Battleground also enjoyed this function. A raffle was held in early February as a moneymaker. Items raffled were a crockpot, a stuffed animal, and a gift certificate. These items were donated by local merchants. We appreciate their sponsorship. Several socials and moneymakers were planned for Spring upon the arrival of good weather. HTTEEH Helping Individuals Take Each And Every Day naturally! WWI-Washington Teen Institute Hi-Teen is a club organized to help teens take each and every day naturally. They want to let people know you can still have fun without alcohol and drugs. Through- out the year, Hi-Teen did a number of skits that really got the message across to other teens concerning drugs and alco- hol. WWI is a large group of teens from differ- ent schools that attended a camp last sum- mer all about learning that drugs and al- cohol are not where it's at. Those mem- bers include Jeff Shiery, Tracy Symonds, Lisa Clinkmgbeard, Lena Bevaart, Kari Nordhougen, Julie Bolton, Joanne Jay, and Mike Buonocore. Advisors are Mrs. Geyer and Mrs. Simpson. ATHLETICS CHEERLEADERS Cheerleading is alot more than uniforms, ponpoms and the splits. The sport takes skill, determination and ability to execute the moves and dances well. From June 30 to July 3 the girls went to Cheer- camp in Portland, Oregon. After practicing three days a week at 7:00 a.m. through the summer they are a valuable part of our school spirit and pride. Mr. Lee Knight still finds time to help students like James Devlet. This year Mr. Knight has attended conventions and also completed courses on learning styles and critical thinking. We appreciate all the time that Mr. Knight puts into the school and thank him for his support. Mr. William Huebner thinks that the Class of 1987 has shown great lead- ership qualities this year. In addition to the seniors, the whole student body has had enthusiasm, especially at pep assemblies. After being here six years, Mr. Huebner is use to listening to ex- cuses and explanations and sits through one more with Joey Stein- feldt. 120 DISTRICT orne E Overall, our district continues to grow slightly, but our enrollment at the high school has remained rather stable. The Class ol 1987 will be the first to be able to utilize the new auxiliary gym being built adjacent to the gymnasium and wrestling room. Future generations of high school students will also be able to use the weight training room that is being constructed at the same time. I have been extremely pleased with the leadership shown by the Class of 1987. This leadership was evidenced by the out- standing efforts put into this year's Home- coming celebration, with the largest tur- nout for the Homecoming Dance in years. Richard D. Jenny Watkins, Tina Gray, Jodie Jeter, Becky Parian, N P Patrick Ernst Editorial Comm frit We II always remember the Ireeze-bell, the lunch pails and the raising of your hand to be dismissed from lunch. The Tether-Ball, and Four Square or chasing the girl or boy of your fancy and thinking once you caught him her — what am I suppose to do now? Once we made it to Middle school; all of us with attitudes of the Supreme Cool realized what education was really about — HOMEWORK'! Girls discovered boys and the boys discovered sports. Even at school dances the newly discovered feelings stood true, the boys clung to the wall during the fast dances and the girls danced by themselves — even during the slow dances most boys were literally drug out onto the floor. Once we finally made it to High school, we all pretty much discovered what the word class meant. Everything in high school revolves around your class. There are class competitions, class meetings and you even make a class float for the Homecoming Parade. ■ The class of 87 has always been a close and very out going group. We have put out many athletes, strong group leaders, scholars and most important many friendships. The teachers always talk about what up-coming class is ' ‘rowdy or what class group is t isically a good all around attitude class — in our opinion the definition of a Good Class would be the class of 87. It s the people who make the class what it is, and the class of 87 has some of the beet eople around. Our class is lucky, we are the type of class who supports one another; if one of our members is honored or rewarded we all feel admiration not jealousy, we all stick together and most importantly we all respect each others thoughts and feelings. In our opinion the only direction the class of 87 could go is up — success will come easily for most, and for those who have to work a little harder to reach their goals will be greatly rewarded. We have come along way since kindergarten and we are going to keep going — for this class of 87 there is no can't and there is no END We wish you all the Best of LUCK!
