T’KOPECHUCK 1985 WHITE RIVER HIGH BUCKLEY, WASHINGTON 98321 Things Are Busy Again We’re On The Move The first day of school is finally here! Fresh, man Mandy Porter steps out, ready for her first day of high school. Mandy, like many other students, comes from Carbonado. The buses pull up, and classroom doors are thrown open in welcome. New senior Cath- erine Huffman proudly shows her reward for showing up for another year. Once every- one has arrived, the first assembly beings. ASB president Mike Eppard tries out the mike, and the senior section gets hyped for the final year. The freshmen, in the balcony, step over each other trying to see. The soph- omores relish sitting on the main floor. The juniors look forward to when they will be in the senior section. After Mr. Knight’s familiar welcoming speech, and the ASB skit, an- other school year begins. The Year Picks Up Speed E Teachers Prepare Lessons The year is settling back into a familiar rou- tine. The halls are filled with students com- ing and going. Classrooms have students busily trying to finish assignments, and Mr. Smetherem sets up lessons for civics. Teach- ers stop going over rules, and start giving assignments. Senior Jenny Thomas shows us the flip side of her personality — John Wayne. It's full steam ahead now — all the way to Graduation. They Make It Happen As other activities and sports make head- way around school, student council gets un- derway. Class reps are elected, and class officers set up meetings. Early this year, su- perintendent Dick Andrews paid a visit to a council meeting. As officers Jana Hauser, Jackie Joswick, and Mike and Brad Eppard listened, he explained the new student park- ing policy. A fund was also set up to help the beautification committee. A total of $1,000 is available for the ASB fund, it the commit- tee does its job, and the grounds look litter free. Student Council is the activity that holds ev- erything together at WRHS. They control the money flow, make executive decisions, and make things move. H Cheering Our Way To Victory Our cheerleaders for this year are Cheri Clinkingbeard, Niki Goforth, Jeanine Nelson, Kristi Nordhougen, Sheri Pries, Tina Pries, Valerie Schmitz, and Pau- la Visnaw. The cheerleaders promote spirit and urge our teams on. UjUUmmi JycLoL Q) ( f UUU £tscAn] ' - yv Z S' A 3000 Brt+ Varv SicJdc PaA. Wccti fa Cwz. They attended horticulture contests in November, February and April, went to an agricultural mechanics contest ( In January, and sent two club members to the National FFA convention In November. It wasn’t all contests and conventions. The club sold Christmas wreaths and plants from the new- ly rebuilt greenhouse. All the cash from their pro- jects helped pay for their get-togethers. High- lights were: The FFA summer trip and the Christ- mas and Halloween parties. Collectively, It was a great year down on the farm. £ Foreign Exchange- Broadened Horizons 1. Michael tollman, Spain. It’s a direct connection to the environ- ment. Larger numbers each year are learning the procedures to maintain and preserve our wood- lands. The mill was a big addition to this year's pro- gram which included les- sons like clear-cutting and stocking streams. Spirit Week often brings out the wild and crazy Hor- nets. This year was definitely no exception. As you can see from the above schedule, Monday signaled the arrival of many characters — fictional and oth- erwise — from Tom Sawyer to Joan Crawford. Each day added to the spirit and festivities that make Spirit Week and Homecoming memorable. Howev- er, Nerd Day brought out the greatest number of “crazies.” So many nerds were spotted, we were prompted to Initiate the first annual nerd log pic- ture. The Main Event On Coronation night, October 18th, Alan Catchpole and Jeanie Newkirk were crowned King and Queen to reign over the Royal Court consisting ot Mark Dierlnger, Cherl Clinking- beard, Mike Eppard, Pattie Hansen, Chris Mills, Jana Hauser, Greg Fer- nandes, and Pollle Hansen. Highlighting Its year was a Youth Forum Day. Students attended sessions In which problems confronting today’s youth were dis- cussed. People + Energy + Pride = Pep Again this year, Pep Club, with advisor Claudia Coles, did Its best to promote spirit throughout the student body. “Spirit” Is defined by Web- ster’s dictionary as vigor, en- thusiasm, and loyalty. The members encouraged this general feeling by making posters, thinking up Spirit Week, and supporting the sports teams. Before many of this year’s games, players found decorations on their lockers. Members put In a lot of time and effort to see that these were made and put up. Their support of our teams didn’t stop there. They also were at home games. Led by the cheerleaders, they loudly cheered our teams on. Spirit Week was a real success. The campus looked like Holly- wood on Monday, Oct. 15th, as students dressed like their favorite movie star. On Tues- day, the high school could have been ancient Greece during Toga Day. Bright floral shirts ruled on Hawaiian Day. Nerd Day was a real laugh when plaid polyester slacks and slide rules showed up every- where. The fun ended with Boxer Shorts and Vans Day. The student body really appreciates ev- erything Pep Club does. Football “At the beginning ot the season we anticipated success, with the possibil- ity ot making the play-otts. The opening game was en- couraging when we de- feated last year’s co- champion, Port Townsend, by a score of 8-0. In the next contest, against co- champion Steilacoom, we were defeated 12-7, in spite of the fact that we al- most doubled the rushing yardage made by our op- ponents. From the second game on, we experienced a series of Injuries which made consistent play diffi- cult. The highlight of the season was undoubtedly the homecoming game. We completely dominated Foster, resulting in a 34-7 victory.” Coach Doug Funk Other individual highlights were senior Chris Mills breaking the single game tackling record, with 28 tackles against N. Tennis Has Encouraging Season «. I This year's tennis team was a really young one, with only three letter winners returning, and no seniors. This season could have been looked at as a rebuilding year, but the Hor- nets don’t give up. After losing the first matches due to lack of experience, the team began to win sets and games. It this perserverance keeps up, next year should be an excellent season. Keep up the great work, teaml This year's players are: Michelle Anderson, Tracy Covey, Dianna Gatto, Dawn Hay, An- drea Jones, Jill Ochsner, Kim Powell, Dan- ielle Reed, Katie Such, Pam Talley, Susan Wentz, and Jennie Wood. Sinking both of them puts WR ahead 28 20 ogainst Eatonvllle. Bret VanStckle (24), Chris Mills, and Matt Hartmann play tough defense against a Tacoma Baptist player. Sophomore Matt Miller tips the ball to Brian Phelan In an exciting game against Eatonvllle. Shooting For The Top This year’s boys basketball team had a tremendous sea- son, taking first place in the Eastern division of the Nisqually League. The desire to win topped by skill gave our guys the power to win. Returning Var- sity players and new blood helped to bring out the best in our team. With only five losses for league play, our team was tied with Orting for the first place title, but we earned it be- cause of a better season re- cord. Way to go) Our guys also qualified for districts, which we missed last year by half a game. Improvement was seen all around by our basketball team. Congratulations. Top plct. Walsh, J. Catchpole, W. Wllcoxson, P. Hlx, M. Mills. The varsity baseball team will be returning only tour lettermen from last year — Greg Fer- nandes, Mark Dierlnger, Danny Catchpole, and Willy Wllcox- son. This will be one of the youn- gest baseball teams fielded by White River In many years. Tak- ing this into account, this could be considered a rebuilding year. But, by all indications of the players, they are ready to go out and be a competitive force In the Nisqually League. Senior Mark Dierlnger feeds the pitching machine in our new batting cages. Junior Trevor Desmul Improving hi swing. Senior Mike Madden show excellent form for first year pitching. Freshman Brent Peloll (left) and Senior Greg Fernandes (right) both pitch to Junior Willy Wllcoxson (middle) posing with bat WATCH OUTI This year’s Softball Team started out a successful year as shown by the number of girls who turned out. This camaraderie showed evidence that they want more than just a success- ful year, and they had their sights set for state competition. With this group there goals will be met. During warm up, the girls work out the kinks left over from winter. Junior Peggy Knight gathers the ball while showing her terrific form. Michelle Ramsey winds up for a long “bomb” to third base. Tammy Shelton makes an excellent catch for a force out. Geleah Free prepares to make an out at first base. Jenny Thomas patiently waits for a ball to come her way in the lonely “outfield” position. “Golf. .. .takes a swing” Hornet golfers faced tough com- petition this year. As defending Nisqually League champions, other teams had no trouble get- ting up for White River. The only returning lettermen were Matt Hartmann and Bryan Jensen. The team’s future looks bright, however, as coach Merv Such welcomed several talented freshmen and sophomores to tryouts for spots on the squad this spring. Opposite page- 1. This year's only girl, Katie Such, tries to tee up. She usually had to have one of the guys do It, but she made progress. 2. This year's Hornet golf team. 3. Seniors Jensen Hartmann hold up last year's trophy. The burning ques- tion this year was, Can they do It again? This page. 1. Which way did it go? Beam me up, Scottie-Freshman Mike Podk- ranlc shows off his equipment. Boy’s Track The boys track team isn’t as big as it has been in the past, but there are a lot of good individuals. Alan Catch- pole should lead in the sprints and make it to state. Doug Smith and Wil- ly Woyach should do well in the pole vault, with Steven Storm the main person in the hurdles. Girls Track The girls track team this year is mostly made up of seniors and freshmen. The team should be reasonably strong, espe- cially in the sprints and relays. The de- fending 400 and 800 relay teams are back. They are Tina Riehm, Sue Davis, Cindy Wood and Pollie Hanson. Dee Dee Moriarty should do well in the hurdles and high jump. People in the throwing events have a lot of potential. Senior Joanne Maris should lead distance runners, but she has a lot of competition from the freshmen. Underclassmen Dominate First Season 1st: Doug Marls, Erie Richardson, Josh Clark. 2nd: Tod Jay, Shane Ziemer, Terry Harrington, Andy Haugen, Coach McKean. 3rd: Euroca Dickson, Erin Smith, Roxanne Bare, Clarice Loomis, Joanne Marls. 2) Proud seniors Terry Harrington, Joanne Maris, and Tod Jay. Har- rington and Marls turned out because they love to run-Jay was getting In shape for basketball. 3) Everyone stretches out before a big match. Richardson takes It easy, Clark makes friends with a tree, and Jay contemplates forgetting his socks. 4) Coach Doug McKean-thls was his first cross country team at White River.
