They have always been known by many as being a very original and outstanding class. When we look back on our High School years, I am sure we will remember the good times our class had together. This class always tried to do everything with style and originality. We should feel good about our class because we were able to do much of what we did through fundraisers for color pictures to changing the colors of our graduation robes. With strong leadership possessed throughout the class, we will have many successful people, but we will always remember the friendships and the numerous things learned throughout our years at White River. White River will never forget the class of '83. To live my own life, - in my own way. To reach for the goals, - I have set for myself To be me • That is success! Gayle Marls was the first member to be elect- ed District Treasurer and Anne-Marie Thompson was the first female President in the history of the club. Key Club 67 The big chance for Pep Club this year was in their requirements needed for a letter. In the past, all a member had to do was earn 42 points by going to games and matches and helping out in club activities. The new constitution says that a member must now earn 55 points. In addition, she must also sell tickets once at a game and attend three posters parties. “The purpose of this amendment,” Advisor Claudia Coles said, “was to increase participation in club activities and to reduce the burden put on the officers and core membership.” Special activities for the Pep Club this year included a salad sale and a pot-luck dinner for the State-bound volleyball team. They held a dance on January 14, with Monty Smith Experiment playing. 1. (Bottom Row): S. Lind. P. Rumpia. K. Lyon. M. Grader. H. Shull. C. Pemberton. C. Johnson. K. Lyon. Advisor C. Colee. Long gives clues to her unknown cha rade, while A. Rudder. J. Johnson and J. Straub try to guess it. This was a year of firsts for Drama. The usually small class grew quite large as aspiring actors and actresses filled its ranks. It was also the first year that the class elected officers. Led by Pres. Candy Ford, the Drama Class set up fundraisers such as a bake sale, to help pay for their scripts. The group performed A Christmas Carol, Once Apon A Shoe, and The Mouse That Roared. Two Drama students, Pres Candy Ford and Tres. Jean Edge were chosen to attend Centrum, a drama workshop held in Port Townsend. This year made the third year that Candy Ford was chosen and the second year for Jean Edge. The Hornet football team lived up to their high-ranking, despite a couple of unexpect- ed losses early in the year. The thrill of the season came on Homecoming night, when the Hornets demonstrated their ability to beat any team in the league, by beating State champions North Mason, 35-15. They didn’t take their eyes off a play-off spot until they traveled to 2nd place Port Townsend a week later and left with a 12-20 loss. White River closed out their year with a win over Foster, 13-9. This left them with a 6-3 win- loss record to be proud of. Awards given out this year were voted on by the team. Senior Kelly Boyle received “Team Captain,” “Most Inspirational,” and the “Tackling Award.” Senior Ron Inglln was given the “Coaches’ Award” by Mr. Funk, and Junior Mike Howard earned the “Blocking Award.” 1 Jeff Alfano A Jor Bauman ! They walked through season play with 14 wins and one non-league loss to Double A Tahoma, in which the scores were 13-15, 15-7, 13-15. This record allowed the girls to be Nisqually League Champions, then victories at District play also ranked them number 1 in districts 2 and 3. At the State Tournament in Finley, the Hornets found tougher play. They won their 1st match, lost the 2nd, won the 3rd, but lost the last two games, which qualified them as 7th in Single A State. “I would like to thank each of the girls for their contributions, for all the fun moments, and for the class act they have brought to the White River Volleyball Program, says Varsity Coach Trent Page. Awards this year went to Patty Thurston as “Most Inspirational”, Judy Straub and Marnlta Grader as “Most Improved” and Patty Thurston also re- ceived “Team Captain . The J.V. team did just as well as the varsity team, which made Coach Dianne Campbell proud. “A good majority of them will be moving on to varsity, and that, in itself, is a sign of success”. They traveled to Va- shon to beat the eventual league champions, 4-1. The Hornets also ended their season on a winning note, with a victory over Eatonville, 4-1. In between these two matches the Hornets earned 5 more wins and 4 losses, ending with a 7-4 record. This was good enough to finish league play in 3rd place behind Vashon and Charles Wright. Six Varsity players participated in sub-districts on Nov. 4. Although the Hornets effort shone, the com- petition was too tough and none of White River’s players placed. Returning from last year were six of the seven varsity players. The J.V. team consisted of four Freshman and one Junior. But when it was Lila’s own son. Ole, that drove in the winning layup with only 12 seconds left to play, it was, as Coach John Hyppa put it, “a story-book finish.” A near win over Class AA Spanaway Lake on December 29 created just about as much excitement for the home crowd of White River. The Eastern division of the Nisqually League produced some difficult play for the Hornets this year. Had it not been for four tough, close losses to league opponents, the basketball team could very well have made it to the play-offs at the end of the season. A win over Eatonville on February 15 wrapped up the 1983 home season for White River, 63-61. With one game yet to play, the league record for the Hornets was 5-11. Leading the team in scoring this year were Junior Bryan Jeter and Senior Kelly Boyle. Jeter, at 6’3”, was also one ot the top rebounders in the league. “This year’s Seniors added a lot of character and experience to the team, while the underclassmen and Juniors give White River hope for a bright and promising future, were Coach Hyppa's comments. 94 - 9 1 Coach Hyppa 2 Carl Hlrschel 3 Kelly Boyle 4 John Ralhl 5 Ole Johnson b Bryan Trulllnger 1 Bottom Row L to R Mike Williams, Joe Mills, Bryan Trulllnger. White River’s Girls Varsity Basketball Team proved to be one of the top teams in the Nisqually League. The team showed great spirit, intensity and consistency throughout the season, which enabled them to qualify for District Play-Offs for the third consecu tive year. Leading scores for the year were Carol Blanusa and Karl Kaelln. Leading in rebounds were Patty Thurston and Gerl Drake. The steady play of Vicki Chenaur and Penny Vlsnaw combined with the bench play of Tina Rlehm. and Sue Davis, proved to be a very positive factor that contributed to the overall team effort. The enthusiasm and positive attitudes of Lorraine and Vicki Porter, Sheila Loomis. Lisa Moe, and Lisa Robertson made for a strong team effort. But when the Hornets started to win their league matches, it was those four Freshmen plus Senior Bill Ratliff turning in steady performances all year long that built a strong base from which the rest of the team could work with. Early in the season. Coach Brame realized the potential of his team and with the power of the Seniors and the ability of the underclass- men, White River ended their league play with a 5-3 record. The sub-regional tournament on February 5, in Orting, put the Hornets to the test, again, and White River proved its ability to walking away with the Championship and eight wrestlers continuing on to Regionals, five being Seniors, three being Freshmen. I would like to thank her for her selection of a wonderful staff and for her continuous support and confidence in me. Moving in as our new advisor was Mr Merv Such. The 1983 T’Kopechuck wouldn't have been possible if it wasn t for all the hard work and countless number of hours of his own time he donated in helping us meet each deadline. Thank you Mr Such from the entire staff We couldn’t have done it without you! Also, there are two special people in my life to whom I owe endless thanks to. It is because of them that 1 am able to be a part of this book. They are my parents, Earl and Gladys Hill. Thanks mom and dad for everything.
