Never in my life Did I meet Someone who could have Been so sweet. He Brought happiness Wherever he went And made it known He was Heaven-sent. The Pep Club members and officers also helped the elderly through decorating for a senior citizen’s dance. The Pep Club served the school through the selling of tickets, programs, and popcorn at home games. The Pep Club officers were headed by a continuously busy crew: Lorraine Porter, President; Caren Johnson, Vice-president; Marnita Grader, secretary; Janis Mullig, treasurer; and Tris Berg, points chairman. They also acquired Craig Goegebuer at rifle in the colorguard unit. They had various fund raisers throughout the year. The team sold buttons, had a swap meet, sold crystal, Tupperware, and Watkin products. Tracy Erickson led the unit through a successful year as captain; Carol Streepy aided Tracy as co- captain; Marsha Marzolf showed her stuff as stu- dent council representative; and Dawn Neal kept up the books as secretary-treasurer. They also ad- ded a flag section leader, Noreen Tropple, and a rifle section leader, Tracey Erickson. Mr. Boyko, the advisor, said “It’s really gratifying to work with an excited group of young people with var- ious backgrounds and experiences and have them coalesce into an entertaining, cohesive unit.” 13 Mr. Boyko, advisor. Monday, high school students dressed up as little boys and little girls as they remembered how their parents once dressed them. Tuesday brought peo- ple right from “the sack”, only to have awakened in their PJ’s while others thought dressing as an original Artesian proved more suitable. When Wednesday arrived everyone dressed in whatever they could find hidden in the hack of their par- ents’ closet or at Salvation Army and came to school as punk dudes. Thursday came a new trend of fro’s, bows, hats, and ties. Friday was the tradi- tional 50’s day, with combined lunch and Sock hop. The Sock hop in the gym brought the 50’s alive once again. Student Council We Are All In Our Places With Bright Shiny Faces This was the first year for White River to be included in the Nisqually League. Showing their leadership qua- lities, the Student Council was able to help their new league begin an Inter- High program. Our A.S.B. officers welcomed Mr. Heubner as their new advisor. An- other new twist was added when the office of secretary treasurer became two separate offices. Activities throughout the year in- cluded the Homecoming dance, a sen- ior citizen’s dance, bingo, and many other fund raisers, as well as decisions, decisions, decisions. A fast moving play, “WHAT EVER THIS IS WE’RE ALL IN IT TOGETHER” was good experience for the young actors and actresses who learned alot about character development. Most of them had to change roles two or three times during the performance. Others gained first hand experience with sound, lights, and prop management. All the students pitched in to help put on a good show and were really enthused about performing. Ms. Owens advised the group. Candide in the Army Sanitation crew at work. The last district conven- tion showed that White River has be- come a top club in the Pacific North- west, when they won more awards than any other club. This year’s theme is “Pursue Tomor- row’s Potential.” The club was active in promoting traffic safety at White River this year in response to recent tragic accidents involving our students. They also were active in following through on last year’s youth Forum Day by spon- soring films and seminars which pro- mote stronger family life. 21 Barn Tolo 1981-82 Students Club Kicks The Hay Up For Tolo In November, our Students Club put on a Barn Tolo. The dance was held in the Elemen- tary School’s cafeteria. The band was “Bad Dog.” Students Club raised enough money for next year’s Homecoming decorations. The annual staff added eight pages, implemented new graphic designs, and basically produced one of the most pol- ished. professional annuals to be seen in many a year. After the 1981 T’Kopecnuck was highly rated by judges at the Evergreen yearbook confer- ence in Olympia, 1982 staffers knew they could do even bet- ter. Under the direction of Eric Robertson, editor, and various section editors, staff- ers worked through a number of deadlines, sold ads in the community, and finished the 144 page annual you hold in your hand. During the year the staff also managed to host some notable cultural” events, which included a sandwich smorgasbord, a Christmas gift exchange, and the traditional Mexican gala after the final deadline. 1982 - a year to re- member in room 119; a year to remember how the T’Kope- chuck staff made this very special 1982 book of memo- ries. When choir members look back on this year they will always remember the month of May, because for many it represented the culmina- tion of many long hours of ehearsal. fund rais- ing projects and fun. Within two days of each other, the choir hosted the Nisqually league Choral Festival and attended the National Choir Festival in Seattle. The Nisqually League Festival was a first and all the schools that attended were im- pressed by our choir and our school. Students raised $4,000 to attend the National Choir Festival in Seattle. Both choirs performed and received high scores. Choirs performed at sev- eral school concerts, and Select Choir per- formed at many civic organizations through- out the year. Dave Brooks and Mike Merrin were chosen for All-State Choir, several stu- dents were chosen for Music in May, and sev- eral others were chosen for “Who’s who in Music.” This year’s Select Choir and Concert Choir will be remembered by Miss Purcell as her “Huskies Football Team”-the one that was supposed to be “the training choir in the 'building year.” that turned out to be a better choir than ever before! 27 Concert Choir The Best Year Ever 1982 K. Marching Band knocks them dead on their feet. 31 The White River Band announced its entry into the Nisqually League by hosting the first annual League Band Festival. The first performance for the band members was at the University of Washington football game September 12. The marching band also developed dance routine and skits which they included in their halftime performances under the direction of Cami Dalton, drum major. In addition to the Festival, the band was active with its usual con- certs and contests as well as the solo- ensemble contest. Four members of the band trav- eled to Richland to take part in the 1982 All State Band. Selected for this honor were Cami Dalton for the sec- ond time; Tracy Erickson, David Dalton and Scott Goegebuer were se- lected for their first time. The Jazz Ensemble and stage band had another busy year attending contests in Stevenson and Poulsbo in addition to hosting their annual Jazz Festival and participating in the Nis- qually League Jazz Festival at Foster. Mark Thompson and Mike Kel- baugh attended a jazz improvisation clinic at Western Washington Uni- versity and were able to bring back useful information to help in devel- oping solo playing. What with playing at all the home football and Basketball games, and with their annual mud Wrestling Contest to help pay for the Spring Band trip, the band had a very busy and interesting year. Var- ious merchants donated the prizes for the run-a-thon. Advisor, Mrs. Catchpole, said, “There was more participation than in the past.” The auxiliary went to every wrestling match, home or away. The fun part was the away matches, where they were al- lowed to ride on the bus with the wrestlers (a very quiet experience). This was a great help for psyching up the team, thus letting them know that their fans were right there to root them on to victory. 33 Future Homemakers W.R.-F.H.A. Ms. Coate, said, “The club had a great group of kids who were always will- ing to work.” Honor Society experienced a fabulous year. The year started off with the planning and setting up of a successful Homecoming tea. The club had many prosperous fund raisers throughout the year: a tasty pizza sale, a victorious salad sale, popcorn ball sale, various bake sales, and many other fund raisers. Under the leadership of Whitney Wilson the club was able to raise money for the different functions and collars for the graduating seniors who have earned this notoriety; Bernadette Kossman was always available to give her help and time as vice president; Noreen Tropple as secretary-treasurer showed her enthusiasm as both an officer and member; and Jenny Bickler as points chairman, although continually busy, was always willing to help a club that she thorough- ly enjoyed. Don Smith president, Jenny Bickler vice president, Debbie Storm representative, Kathy Imrie secretary treasurer. The seniors started out with a goal of gain- ing class unity. To support this, they had many class gatherings throughout their final year at White River High School. The most memorable parties were the everlasting sen- ior girls slumber party in the gym and the frolicking annual Christmas party. This was a year the senior class of 1982 will always remember as most memorable. 49 CHRIS ACKLIN ROBERT MICHAEL ANDREWS “Stash” Basketball 1,2. Football 1. FFA 1. Car- penter - Lockhart Cons. Evidence of the de- termination of this team was ob- vious when they were behind, 24- 0, going into the 4th quarter against Enumclaw. They fought back, finally losing by a score of 21-24. The outstanding senior athletes that were on this year’s squad, will be certainly missed, but no need to worry as the team has a great group of returning players. Mr. Funk said, “I have high hopes that they will be able to improve on this year’s record.” The Hornet offense prepares for the assault. They entered the Nisqually League, in which the boys and girls’ tennis teams were separated. In the Nisqually League, the girls’ tennis team won five matches out of 13. This year’s girls’ varsity basketball team made the year a memorable one, especially with all their energy, spirit, and enthusiasm that com- bined to make a super season. Miss Page, coach, put her feelings of the team, in a poem: This year was tough many opponents were rough But the girls were great all year they played first rate. A great group of twelve who as a group came to meld They had a good season-“class” was the reason. Love ya Page 100 Geri Drake powers up. When Page talks, people listen. Row 1: J. Odanovieh. T. Girls play a strong “D”. Our J.V. squad, which was composed of 50?r freshman, really came on strong. We stung opponents with our offense and swarmed them with our defense. We devel- oped pride form teamwork because each girl gave 11(X. each day. Nothing less would do and we knew it. Lady Hornets are proud and I feel privileged to have joined your ranks. Thanks Trena!! The White River Boy’s Varsity basketball team for the 1981-82 season greeted back 9 players from last years team and returning Coach Lloyd Blanusa. They started out the season with tough opponents. Being small and plagued with injuries, they always seemed to show aggressiveness and good attitudes. They hoped to end the season with a good note and participate in post- season play. B. The boys’ J.V. started out slowly this year, but with great effort and intensity they proved to be a win- ning team. John Hyppa was a new coach this year for a group of strong young players who will be awesome in the upcoming years. The ’C’ team was a new team to the boy’s basketball program. They were coached by Dan Linnell. It was made up of mostly freshmen. They worked hard and gained the needed experience for the future. 105 I mm e ve ng bly Pin, P tmen SHOW f MIIOP Ethan Klein overpowers his man. Steve Evans lets his opponent know who’s boss. With 12 of 13 varsity weights filled, and with a determina- tion to compete that made up for any lack of experience. Hornets earned a 5-2 win-loss league record. The Hornet mat men finished the year impressively with a 6-3 duel match record and outstanding tournament record; second at Castle Rock, third at Sultan, and second at Woodland. Pacing the varsity Hornets this year were Bill Ratliff at 122 lbs., Paul Kuhnle at 108 lbs., Darrell Poole at 135 lbs., and Ethan Klein at 158. Bill, Paul and Ethan also went to state tournaments placing second, seventh, and third. Backing up the varsity was a young but strong J.V. team led by our Italian exchange student, Marco Baggioli. 107 Row 1: Coach Dan Linnell, B. Jensen, D. Breault, J. Hall, M. Shamseldin, Row 2: M. They had one return- ing letterman, senior Matt Terlouw and the rest of the team consisted of sopho- mores and freshman. They depended a lot on the lead- ership of Matt Terlouw this year. For the first time ever in the history of W.R. golf, two girls turn out. This year’s team showed their strengths, which will be an excellent basis for the team of the next couple of years. If these players stick it out the next two or three years they will be a very competi- tive team in the Nisqually league 109 Rookie P. Armstrong shows strength. Marco returns with a strong backhand. Boy’s Tennis was a new addition to this years spring sports. Returning let- termen are Mike Doherty and Mark Tinney. They have obtained some hopefuls that were strong contenders: foreign exchange student, Marco Bag- gioli; Senior Paul Armstrong and Ju- nior Jeff Papenbrock. Sen- ior Dave Brooks took a first in the pole vault, and also broke the record for 12’W He was so excited that he jumped and ran all over the place. That, and all the other firsts, made for an exciting and hopeful year. Needless to say, coaches Hod- der and Ross were proud of the whole team. Whitney shows signs of intensity as she throws the ball. With 12 returning letter-winners and plenty of first year talent, girls' softball had a fantastic season. They had lota of practice, games, and mostly lota of fun. Again, like last year, two wonderful people were there to ease coach Wytko’s load; Cindy Peterson and Bill Thurston. All three built up the girls' skill and attitudes. This talent had the coaches very ex- cited about 1982 season. Coach Wytko studies the situation on the field. 124 While you live on the earth today, be wild crazy, whatever your style, and keep living life to its fullest extent.
