Sponsored by Girls' Club, activities included special days for crazy hats, knickers, mis- matched socks, frizzed hair, spaghetti-eating contests, pie throwing at the faculty and a few courageous students, dress-up day, and of course, 1949 day. On Friday, October 19, a luncheon for the royalty, faculty, judges, and various dignitaries was held. Each candidate took a turn talking to the judges, who evaluated them At the afternoon assembly, with the theme Just You and Me , Marcy Hanson introduced the can- didates for King and Queen. While the judges were making their de- cision, the student body and alumni were entertained by Choir, Stage Band, and student pep skits. Also making an appearance were the spirits of 1949 resurrected in the form of the White River faculty. Following the assembly, faculty, students, and alumni were invited to the Alumni Tea, put on by Honor Society. Although the Hornets put up a valiant fight, they were defeated by the Curtis Vikings, with the final score being 34-14. Sudden Maddness provided the music for the Saturday night for- mal dance. Mike Burton took over as advisor and with this change came a new system of government. Instead of the usual officers, an Exec- utive Board was formed with represent- atives from each sport. Voted down was the proposal to accept girls who had won letters in sports into the club. This year money from popcorn sales at basketball games will be given to in- dividual sports. Curtis again were league champs and Sumner placed second. With only seven seniors on the squad, the Hornets had a little trouble finding ex- perience. They made it up with a lot of hustle and the desire to win. One of the best team efforts for the year was against Foster, which saw ball control on offense and a tough defense throughout the game stave off any Bulldog comeback which resulted in a 7-6 victory. To prove to themselves and everyone, the Hornets faced Curtis with heads high. Take away five big plays by the Vikings and the Hornets could have won. W.R. moved with command a- gainst the Vikings and stopped Curtis al- most at will. They also scored more points against Curtis than anyone else in the league. Then came Enumclaw. At the end of regu- lation time in the Annual Battle of the Hornets, the score was deadlocked at 0-0. Because of the new league ruling against ties, W.R. scored first but missed the extra point attempt. Enumclaw on their four downs to score, punched over the tying touchdown and the extra point went through the uprights for the 7-6 win. Awards voted on by the team went to these players: Honorary Captain - Brian O'Neal, and the Coaches Award also went to Brian O'Neal. Inspirational Award - Lee McGehee, Tackling - Chuck Moriarity, Blocking Award went to Curt Krueger. Hornets at Mount Si. Their only loss was to Foster who placed second in league play. In District Play-offs for the state tournament. White River defeated Sequim 75-56, but lost to North Mason, 58-60, thus losing their chance a tourney play. For the first time the Hornets twice defeated teams like Curtis, Sumner, and Enumclaw. Seniors playing their last game for White River were Glenn Emry, Kim Beydek, Gary Stock, Brian O'Neal, and Lee McGehee. The Jayvees also grabbed first place in the league with their 15-3 record. Calvin Webster participated but did not place, and Rick Miller went as an alternate at his weight. The tournament was again held at Moses Lake. The varsity team went to the Regional meet at Federal Way with the exception of Al Gallion who was out with an injury. Seniors wrestling their last White River match were Ed Hill, Rich Parkko, Calvin Webster and Dan Jones. With the increased interest in the sport Coach Deryl Ross expects a good turn-out next year. This year, 1974, looked to be equally strong with six returning seniors. They were: Dave Kneeland, Curt Krueger, Darrell Seymour, Lee McGehee, Larry Weikum, and Glen Zimbelman. Tennis team continued the tradition of a winning record with a 8 win and 4 loss record in League play for the 1973 season. They placed second behind Enumclaw in the Northern Division of the Seamount League. With returning letter winners Kim Baydek, Bruce Kirk, Cindy Straley, Bonnie Goins, and Brenda Kendall, plus some players up form the J.V. and some talented Freshman, there appears to be a nucleus for a fine team for the 1974 season. They found tougher competition in the Southern Division crossover games. The most exciting moment was the win over a surprising Tahoma team which led 12-0 at the end of 1st. quarter. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL FRESHMAN HAD UP AND DOWNS The Freshman had their ups and downs with a 4 and 6 won- loss record which put them in the middle of the standings. They lost 3 games by a total of 8 points and were only beaten bad in two games. The highlight of the season and the best game they played was their 55-36 win at Enumclaw. They will all be looking forward to playing high school ball next year. The tip!! The State Supt. of Public Instruction asked schools to cut back on energy use by 15%. This meant low- ering thermostats to 68 , and cancelling two practice basketball games. R. Wiley Mellish Principal HITS SCHOOLS Other school costs also soared along with the in- flation spiral. Bus support was cut by the state, forcing the Student Body Association to bear the cost of bussing players to athletic events. The 5-mill levy passed last spring was sufficient only to keep our heads above water. SCHOOL BOARD: Chairman Joe Albert, Fred Miller, Van Madden, Darrell Udd, Louis Gage. But the freshmen held up well in spite of it all. There were too few home games in football for the freshmen to have a soc dance. As a result they held a Valentine Dance during basketball season. Through the years at old White River True we'll always be. Each year spent at White River High takes on its own special meaning to every one of us. When we look back 10 or 15 years from now we may see things that we don't see now, and perhaps even more important, we will not see things then that we see now. Life is a cycle, from summer to spring, grade school to graduation, that carries each of us to a different goal. We hope that in 10 or 15 years, when you look back in this annual you can re-capture the days spent at Old White River. 108
