In our Freshman year we elected Joe Caviezel, Allan Mag- stadt, Louise Behrens, and Betty Ann Inglin as class officers. As Sophomores the main event was our Sophomore Hay- seed Hop. Lorene Erickson was chosen as Chairman. The class was led by President, Dave Elison; Vice-President, Joyce Partin; Representative, Ronald Johnson; and Secretary-Treasurer, June Ousley. Contributing to sports were Ed Demko and Delmar Pickel, who made the football team, while Dave Elison played first string in basketball. Many Sophomores contributed to the band and their special talents were displayed in the Jug Band and Pep Band. Patsy Baker was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Girls’ Club; Betty Ann Inglin was Sophomore representa- tive to the Girls’ Club, and G.A.A. Secretary-Treasurer was Uretta Bock. Leading the class of ’56 through its Junior year were President, Jim Whitehouse; and Sarah Gillis, Representative to the Student Council. We displayed our mighty vim and vigor and won the Pep Jug. We presented our Junior class play. One of the main events of the year was the Junior Prom, with its unique Hawaiian theme, ably planned by Chair- man, Venetia Zaffee, and Co-chairman, Jim Woolery, with the assistance of Mr. Mellish, class adviser. In our Junior year Venetia Zaffee was elected Vice-President of the Girls’ Club and Delmar Pickel was elected Boys’ Club President. President, Norman Looney; Secretary, Sarah Gillis. At last we reached our eagerly awaited Senior year which proved to be the most eventful of all. Allan Magstadt had the task of Student Body President; Norman Looney was elected Senior Class President; Girls’Club President was Lorene Erickson; G.A.A. President was Arlene Willis; the Pep Club elected Carol Hackmann as their President; and Sarah Gillis had the big job of Honor Society President. Also from our Senior class were Hornet editors, Carol Hack- mann and Jim Woolery; and Patsy Baker, handling the difficult job of T’Kopechuck editor. The Senior class won the membership ticket contest and elected Loren Nyberg and Teresa Grab as S.B.A. royalty for the annual. Attesting to the scholastic ability of the Seniors were Ron Johnson, Frances Honsowetz, and Sarah Gillis, who were selected on the basis of their scholastic excellence to take part in the nation’s largest independent scholarship program. The mighty Seniors also contributed much in the field of sports. At the annual football banquet Dennis Bauman received the award as Inspirational Play of the year. Joe Caviezel was voted best tackier and Delmar Pickel was chosen to receive the coaches’ choice award. Elected as Song Queen was Carol Stubbs, with Teresa Grab as song leader. Performing at many half-time activities was majorette, Louise Behrens. This year’s Queen of the Carnival,” Arlene Willis, came from the ranks of the Seniors. One of the main events was the Senior Ball with Chairman, Arlene Willis, and Co-chairman, Jim Woolery. The class of’56 looks back on the years with fond memories. It also consists of the Presidents from various organizations throughout the school with the exceptions of F.F.A., G.A.A., and Pep Club Presidents. Mr. Patrick had the responsibility of Student Council adviser. Upon their shoulders rested the difficulties of busy school life. Some of the business of the Student Council this year was sending Lorene Erickson. Betty Ann Inglin, Allan Magstadt, and Norman Looney to the Student Leaders’ Conference; making laws to help maintain a smoothly running school; whether to have each class hold dance sessions in the gym during activity period; and nomin- ating next year’s S.B.A. officers. The Student Council set a good example for the studerits and other organizations by encouraging student participation and thought in all school problems. Allan Magstadt, President; Charlotte Dieringer, Vice Presi- dent; Betty Ann Inglin, Secretary. The main purpose of the Calendar Committee which was started by the Student Council, is to approve dates for student activities. The Calendar Committee consists of a repre- sentative from each club in the school: Also at- tending the meetings are Mr. Patrick and Mr. Mellish. The Committee meets whenever certain dates have to be set or discussed. These include the dates for such school functions as the Junior Prom, Senior Prom, Band Carnival, and many others. The Calendar Committee has proved very suc- cessful and is a great help to the school, as it pre- vents conflicting dates from arising. The dates of all school functions must be approved by the Calendar Committee. Mr. Ross, Mr. Mellish, Mrs. Caviczel, P. Person, V. ZafTee, C. Dieringer, J. Podolak, and N. Person. FIRST ROW: J. Whenever a deadline approached, the members of the staff were to be seen keeping the mid- night oil burning in order to meet that deadline. There were always the last minute rushes, pictures that couldn’t be found, and the stories that hadn’t been written. At times such as these, the members of the staff unselfishly donated their time and effort to bring to the students an annual of which they could be proud. However, the task could not have been accomplished without the efficiency of the editor, Patsy Baker; the co-editor, Willabclle Rinell; and the adviser, Mrs. Borgstrom. The capable and efficient Hornet staff, characterized by unusual energy and interest in their work, produced the best paper ever seen at White River. Efficiency, accuracy, and devotion to duty were their watchwords as the staff of over thirty, headed by Carol Hackmann and Jim Woolery. Editors, and Judy Phillips and Betty Ann Inglin, Assistant Editors, saw to it that the students got the news hot off the press every two weeks without fail. One of the highlights of the year was the Pacific Slope School Press Conference held in Seattle and at- tended by staff members. The Hornet is a member of Pacific Slope School Press and Quill and Scroll. This year eight staff mem- bers were elected to Quill and Scroll, national Journal- ism honorary society. As December 21, the date of the deadline for ordering annuals in the annual contest drew near, students worked themselves into a frenzy to gather enough to buy an annual and also to persuade classmates to buy annuals to make their class the winners. After the results were all tabulated, the senior class, with 80% of the members buying annuals, were an- nounced the winners. The prize for the winning class was the privilege of electing an Annual King and Queen. Members of the senior class chose lovely Queen Joyce Partin, and handsome King Dave Elison, to represent them as Annual Royalty. King, Loren Nyberg; Queen. Teresa Grab S.B.A. ROYALTY For the second consecutive year the class of ’56 was victorious in the Membership Ticket Contest. As the date set by Mr. Patrick to sell Membership tickets drew near competition was keen. A show of hands by the Sophomore class indicated nearly 100% planned to buy tickets. Sen- iors dug deep into their pockets to buy their membership tickets—those who felt rich loaned to their friends. Such enthu- siasm and co-operation as was shown by the seniors at this time accounted for their success in winning the Membership Ticket Contest. For their prize, the seniors re- ceived $15 for their treasury and also the privilege of selecting an S.B.A. King and Queen. Attractive Teresa Grab was chosen by her classmates as Queen and handsome Loren Nyberg was chosen as King. 32 Prince. Jack Hamilton; King, Joe Caviezel; Queen. Carole Stubbs; Princess, Teresa Crab. The returning grads had a very enjoyable time at the assembly presented for them during the afternoon. Cheers filled the auditorium as pretty Carole Stubbs and handsome Joe Caviezel were crowned Queen and King. Teresa Grab and Jack Hamilton were chosen by the judges to rule as Princess and Prince. At the football game against Vashon, the alumni were thrilled to see the skillful techniques of our football team as they downed Vashon 54-0. To round out the annual event, the grads enjoyed an evening of dancing at the Homecom- ing Dance, which was. as usual, a big success. 33 Section, Highlighting the year for the Seniors was the Senior Ball which was decorated in a golden theme. The co-chairmen for the ball were Arlene Willis and James Woolery, while they respectively chose their minor chairmen, who were Betty Ann Inglin, Lorene Erickson, Ron Holmes, Dave Edi- son, Patsy Baker, Jim Whitehouse, Venetia ZafTee, Allan Magstadt, Norman Looney. The Juniors held the annual Junior Prom on February 10 in the high school gym. The theme was Mardi Graf and it was carried out in many brilliant colors. The dancing was from 9 to 12 to the music of the Quintones. During the inter- mission the Junior Sextet sang Mardi Gras and Blue Skies. Co-chairmen, Carol Renner and Jim Wolcott, had as their committee: David Franklin and Judy Borter. decoration: Linda Chesley, entertainment: Willie Rinell. programs; Jeanne Hatch, tickets: Evelyn Thieman, band, and in charge of the re- freshments was Mary Soler. Miss Agnew and Mr. Sargent, the class advisors, spent much of their time giving new ideas which were very helpful. All the students in the Sopho- more class did more than their share in making their dance a big success. 'Ziovi t Society Endeavoring to .maintain the scholastic standards of the school was the chief aim of tiie Honor Society this year directed by Mr. Kirkendall. Sarah Gillis was elected President and served her term very efficiently. Sarah was ably assisted by Esther Knapp, vice-president and Linda Madden, secretary. Any student maintaining a “B” average or above may he eligible for Honor Society. To be eligible for Torch, a member must maintain his average during his senior year. Among other activities Honor Society members served refreshments in the library after the Homecoming As- sembly and presented a one-act play for the Christmas Assembly. Every high school in the country has a girl for whom the part of Betty is custom-made. She’s all pep. lovely and vivacious and with a propensity for getting into more scrapes than one can shake a stick at. She overhears her mother plotting with sister Lucille to get rid of her for the afternoon while they entertain a matrimonial prospect for Lucille. Betty then swaps places with Geneva, the maid, and makes her big en- trance in Act I when she serves the tea. The family nearly gives her away. Larry, the intended victim, falls for Betty and the play moves along at a fine gait. In the sub-plot is the story of what happened to Geneva who had written in to a matrimonial bureau for a hus- band. And Betty, too, had been having some fun along this line. All these cross currents of humorous situations merge smoothly with the several romances in the mak- ing and the play continues its madhouse pace to a realistic climax. Members of the cast were Gary Edwards. Betty Ann Inglin, Esther Knapp, Patty Kosko, Jim White- house, Teresa Grab. Ervin Olson, Venetia Zaffee, C. Dieringer, and Jim Woolery. When a play is presented in which three teen-age sisters find a harmless burglar snooping in their house, many humorous situations are certain to arise. This was the case in the junior class play, “Nobody Sleeps.” The surprise ending to this play made it one of the most enjoyable plays presented by the stu- dents this year. Members of the cast included Patty Kosko, Judy Borter, Jeannie Podolak, Esther Knapp and Ervin Olson. Mr. Kirkendall directed the play as- sisted by Charlotte Dieringer, student director, and Shirley Trullinger, prompter. Setuo 'PCay “Suppressed Desires,” the title of the one- act play presented by the senior class, was a satire based on the belief of a fanatical woman, Hen- rietta, who believed that everyone has a suppress- ed desire and should do something about this de- sire regardless of what might happen. The in- teresting situation that developed made a very enjoyable play. Sally Boyle ably portrayed Henrietta while Phyllis Hrinchak and Jim Woolery showed fine acting ability by their portrayals of Mahle and Stephen. Mrs. Borgstrom was the director; Carole Stubbs, student director; and Venetia Zaffee, manager. STANDING: Mr. Kirkendall. Esther Knapp. SEATED: Patty Kosko, Ervin Olson, Jeannie Podolak. The play involved a teen-age boy who mis- takenly told people what his family, when angry, said about them. This developed into much confusion and misunderstanding, but the play ended happily as all the troubles were solved with Wilbur, the hero.
