The Mounts were victorious five times and were defeated only twice. I In pre-season contests, the Red and Black warriors battled to scoreless ties with Seattle Prep and Chehalis High on the home gridiron, and met defeat at the hands of a strong Bremerton team at the Navy Yord city. ln the annual Turkey Day game the locals were victorious over the Lakeside Lions from Seattle. Thus the season resulted in six victories, two ties, and three defeats. From the thirty odd candidates, Coaches Ennis and Ames welded an eleven that caused plenty of trouble for every team in the Conference. League victories were won over Renton, Puyallup, Auburn, Highline, and Sumner. The two defeats were handed out by the league-leading Kent Vandals and the Enumclaw Tigers. Captain Thron Riggs, lack Ross, and Francis Zydek received high honors when they were selected on the All Conference first team, Individual scoring honors for the season went to Buckley's ace halfback, jack Rabbit Ross. At the close of the season, Francis Zydek and Louis Doud were voted co-captains of next year's eleven. Thron Riggs and jack Ross were named co-holders of the inspirational award for the season. However, Coach Ennis has some very prospective material in his underclassmen. Many of the underclassmeri show great promise for the coming season and most of them have seen plenty of action this season. So, led by captains, Doud and Zydek, the squad are looking forward to a good season next year. unclerclassmen on squad STANDING: Lowell Doud, Louis johnson, Dan Savage, Bud loswick, Sam Onustock. KNEELINC-: joe Lazor, Oluf Swanson, Carroll Emery, Marvin Payne. L... jACK ROSS COACH ENNIS GENE ELSE As the curtain fell on the l939 basketball season, the Buckley Mountaineers emerged as the undisputed champions of the Puget Sound League, thus bringing the championship trophy back home for the first time in nine years. Pre-season games accounted for one victory and two losses, league contests and play- offs for both halfs brought in thirteen victories and three defeats while the trip to Canada during the Christmas holidays resulted in two victories, totaling l6 victories and 8 losses. Individual scoring honors for the season went to Douglas Legs Martin, who scored l94 points in fourteen games, thus setting a new Puget Sound League record. Fifty-three points set a new state record for points scored in one game. Gene Else, one of Buckley's tricky forwards, and Doug Martin were chosen on the All Conference first team, while jack Ross and Thron Riggs were placed on the second and third teams respectively. Although there are eight graduating seniors on the first squad, Coach Ennis has several boys on the second team who will be ready for lots of action next year. So, with this material and three returning lettermen, prospects for the coming year look very favorable. The citizens of Buckley presented gold basketballs to Thron Riggs, john jurich, Gene Else, Bill McFadden, joe Boyle, Don jackson, Paul Savage, Douglas Martin and jack Ross.
