Worktime The new attendance policy this year forced many students to realize that in order to graduate from high school, they had to work. As a result, it was no longer uncommon to see WPHS stu- dents laboring assiduously over their studies. Playtime Work may have occupied most of our time, but the best mo- ments at WPHS were those spent recovering, getting rowdy, or just relaxing. These times made the road to gradua- tion far more bearable. 9 HdO The Great Escape Munching Out Whether wandering into the world of cafeteria food, snatching a snack at the school store, or buying a brownie for breakfast from a bake sale, Munching Out has been a special time for all at WPHS. Crowds Only as we elbowed our way through packed halls, up down staircases, and through crowded lunch lines did we realize the full effect of reorganization and the addition of the 9th grade to WPHS. Throughout the day the mood of the student body is reflected in the atmosphere of the parking lot. In the early morning hours, as half-asleep carpoolers are jolted into semi-consciousness by the speed bump, the faces of students indicate the reluctance with which they have rolled out of bed to face the challenge of getting to homeroom before the late bell rings. The parking lot is a place to hang out during “non-essential” classes, sitting in or on cars, depending on the season, and trying to evade the watchful administrative eye. Lunch provides a short reprieve for socializing and gearing up for after- noon classes. However, our most vivid recollection of the parking lot will always be the 2:30 p.m. mass exodus, when hysterical mayhem becomes desolation in under five minutes. 18 Dedication The French say “sympathique.” In English, we say caring, warm, friendly, throughtful, giving . . . but we think that the best translation is simply— Joan Baumel. From conjugations to Camus, and from Paris to “Le Petit Prince,” Mrs. Baumel is first and foremost a wonderful teacher. Her participation in both the French club and in the French Exchange has greatly enriched the French program in WPHS. However, Mrs. Baumel’s genuine school spirit, belonging to a species which is practically extinct, transcends the Foreign Language Department. At Christmas time, her room becomes the headquarters for Project Santa Claus, and for weeks she teaches amidst piles of stuf- fed animals and baby books. And because she realizes that the interests of her students also extend beyond her French Class, Mrs. Baumel follows us out of her classroom. She follows us to musicals, spring concerts, dance shows, and basketball games. She follows our interests and talents and encourages us in our every endeavor. And finally, she will follow us out of high school and inquire about our lives long after we have graduated from her class. Whether it is for a good performance in class, in athletics, or stage, or just as a friend, Mrs. Baumel is always there to stand and applaud her students. Now it is your turn, Mrs. Baumel, to accept our applause; for it is to you, our first class teacher, that we proudly dedicate the 1980 Oracle. Daniel Woodard. Assistant Principal Manson Donaghey. Coach Woody’s 200th win of his career added an extra spark to the soccer team’s tremendous season. Football Football Those on the sidelines view it as a mass of players trying desperately to make a touchdown. Those who have played it know better. To them it is a challenge which is met with total dedication. This dedication resulted in a 10-0 season for the Tigers this year. Aw Shucks . . . “We know that you know that we know we’re 1!” Field Hockey This year’s field hockey team was very consis- tent. They never lost their spirit — they never stopped trying — and they never won. However, in spite of their less-than-successful season, every field hockey game promised at least two things: good food and good fun! Girls’ Swimming The girls’ swim team finally achieved their long awaited goal — they had their team picture hung on the wall in E corridor. The Conference A champs completed their best season ever with a 9-1 record. 69 White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains4 White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Plains White Pluins Fall Scorecard 1979 Varsity Football 26 Arlington o 38 Yonkers 6 34 Sc arsdale 7 56 Lincoln 6 17 Mt. The second day, not even blisters and bruises could deter the students from their triumph over Mt. Whittenburg. 73 We have so many memories from the past few weeks that is difficult to look all the way back to the fall and remember the good times we had. Let’s not forget Hat Day, pep rallies, the National Honor Society induction, Homecoming, the first G.O. dance, the trips to Grease and Annie, the movie Tommy, and much, much more . . . Tiger Tracks: Section xxvi I. Dressing and Good Grooming Since appearance is important to students individually and as a group, and reflects the respect in which they hold themselves and others, it is necessary that they dress neatly and appropriately . . . ALL OUTSIDE APPAREL SUCH AS HATS AND COATS ARE NOT TO BE WORN IN SCHOOL. Man is but a mere image of his hat! 77 79 “Now is the winter of our discontent.” —William Shakespeare For skiiers, skaters, sledders, and snow man makers, the winter of 1980 was truly a winter of discontent. An almost total lack of snow left smiles on the faces of those who longed for warm weather, but brought tears of grief to the eyes of those whose skis were rusting in the basement. This winter was a disappointment for everyone, however, because no snow means no snow days .. . and everyone loves a snow day! 84 The boys’ basketball team turned around a rather uneventful season by winning six of their last nine games. They lost a close game to New- burgh in the first round of the sections to end the season with a record of 10-12. 89 91 Ice Hockey Although the hockey team lost many of their games in the first part of the season, they made a remarkable comeback and won enough games to qualify for the Section 1 playoffs. The Tigers beat Eastchester in the quarter finals by an amazing score of 10-1. Despite their 3-4 loss to Rye in the semi-finals, the team demonstrated much improved stick work and skating skills — not to mention determination! The fans of W.P.H.S. created a great deal of incentive for the hockey team. There was always an ample supply of Rye bread to throw on the ice after every White Plains goal against Rye, and shouts of “YOU, YOU, YOU!” could always be heard when a player on the other team received a penalty. The fans truly created the spirit needed for a Tiger Victory! Hockey Cheerleaders? i m ■SOmEiaBRB ttv ? 94 Basketball Cheerleaders Indoor Track This year’s indoor track team was very successful, finishing third or better in almost every meet. Out- standing individual performances by several team members highlighted the season. Gymnastics 98 Several gymnasts turned in fine perfor- mances for the girls’ gymnastics team this year despite a disappointing record of 4-6. Barbara Skrivaneck’s first year as coach was plagued with missing music, missing judges, missing gymnasts, ripped palms, bad knees and cracked bars. Sleek new uniforms, stops for pizza on the way home from meets, and the “waving-sock” fans all added to the spirit of the 1979-80 gym- nastics season. Wrestling The wrestling team’s ac- complishments this season were first class in every way. The tigers ended the season with a 14-1 record, and won the respected title of Section 1, Class A-2, Conference A- Division 1 Champs. 101 The boys’ swim team started their season on a high note with four strong wins. As the season progressed, however, the competition became tougher, and the Tigers lost most of their remain- ing meets. Although the swimmers had trouble ex- celling as a team, a num- ber of individuals demonstrated fine perfor- mances in the post season competition. 102 Winter Scorecard 1980 Boys’ Varsity Basketball White Plains 48 Mamaroneck 62 White Plains 85 Stepinac 83 White Plains 46 Scarsdale 76 White Plains 63 Yorktown 65 White Plains 62 St. Raymond’s 64 White Plains 60 Nyack 44 White Plains 76 Lincoln 52 White Plains 59 Yonkers 66 White Plains 85 Mt. On December 13, the orchestra, jazz band, A Cap- pella Choir and percussion ensem- ble performed in the winter music concert. In the electronic music concert, arranged and conducted by Israel Kopmar, the audience heard a new and rare type of music and learned some in- teresting facts about a different type of instrument, the syn- thesizer. In the 2nd annual cham- ber music concert, many musi- cians demonstrated their in- dividual talents in small ensem- bles, piano duos and choral groups. The Cultural Horizons Choir, directed by Sharon Greene, gave an exciting and energetic performance at a school assembly in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. Each concert was extremely well performed and highly enter- taining for those who attended. 105 110 Ill I Lacrosse Baseball 118 Girls Soccer 119 The Music Man Tom McGovern Jackie Shwab Richard Goldberg Barbara I evy Jeffrey Link . . From the first somewhat hesitant get-togethers as sophomores, to the final determined meetings as seniors, our class government has worked valiantly to raise the prom money. Under the leadership of John Beilenson in our sophomore year, and Stuart Geller in our junior and senior years, our class government has sponsored an endless number of events, including: countless bake sales (“Doughnut anyone?”) two square dances (“swing your partner!) Movie Nights (this year, Tommy, last year, The Spy Who Loved Me.) the Candy Drive (“Anybody want a candy bar?”) Senior Night (featuring the school band “Earfood”) And the great money-maker, the School Store (Gimme a Kit Kat, 2 Mountain Dew, 2 peanut M M’s . . . ) As we leave White Plains High School, we reflect on the achievements of our class, and we can be proud of the government which did do much for us. They have helped to make us a true first class class! What Is A Senior? sen-ior (sen yer), n. 1. Any individual in his her last year of high school. 2. Can be seen taking S.A.T.’s and writing college applications in the fall. 3. In the spring, can most often be found at the beach during the day and in bars or at parties during the night. 4. Is inclined to engage in any activity which does not include going to class. Being free and ready to challenge the world.” — Karen Mine “It’s the longest field goal I’ve ever kicked. — John Messemer ‘The end of this and the beginning of that.” — Greg Petrus The new decade was ushered in by a variety of tumultuous events. The holding of 50 American hostages in the U.S. Embassy in Iran led to a deluge of anti-Ayatollah paraphenalia. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan sparked the debate over reinstating registration for the draft; the price of gold soared, as did the skiers at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, although an American boycott in the Summer Olympics in Moscow seemed possible. Fiction 150 became disturbingly close to reality as the nuclear accident depicted in the movie The China Syndrome was almost realized at Three Mile Island. Top rock stars gathered for 5 nights in Madison Square Garden to protest nuclear energy in a series of “No Nukes Concerts.” We found a new definition of a 10 as girls began to im- itate the braided hairstyle made famous by Bo Derek. The long- awaited movie Apocalypse Now joined Breaking Away and Kramer vs. Kramer in the ranks of the most popular movies. Soap operas such as General Hospital continued to make daytime television an obsession, while Mr. Bill’s high-pitched “Oh Nooo!” squeaked its way from Satur- day Night Live into our daily conver- sation. New Wave Rock entered into the music picture, but it was the perennial rock group The Who whose concert in Cinncinatti resulted in the deaths of 11 young people. Closer to home, the song most heard from our boxes” was Rapper’s Delight. Designer jeans made the move from skin-tight to baggy and were often worn with bright-colored sweatere, cowboy boots and le sport sacs. “Preppie” clothes such as oxford shirts and fair-isle sweaters graced the halls in increasing numbers. Daytime flat shoes were traded for roller skates at night as a number of roller rinks opened in Westchester. The traumas and trends that charac- terized the past year may have faded, but somehow the images they have impressed in our minds and hearts will always remain.
