Johnson last spring as our new superintendent of schools afforded an added distinction to a fine educational design here. Dr. Johnson arrived in White Plains early in July with Mrs. Johnson and his two young childrenhliatherine and Walter-to take over his new position. Being superintendent of public schools becomes even more dillicult during this period of problems. Rapid growth of White Plains residential areas sends a steadv flow of new children to the schools: higher earnings in other fields of work dis- courage prospective teachers from entering public educationg funds for new schools and expanded facilities must constantly bc extracted from a generousebut limited- school budget. During his short period of ollice. Dr. Johnson has helped to inaugurate a new und comprehensive building program. An increased school budget has allowed for a development of improved salary schedules and better current salaries for teachers.
