Unflinching courage in the face of illness, the spirit of fairness evident in her classrooms her unfailing good humor,-- these have made her outstanding among us. What could he more fitting than that we should, out of deep respect and immeasurable gratitude, dedicate our current Oracle to MIISS RUTH ANDREWS. FUREWURD IUFIE, in its own way, is a Battle, around and ahout the towers and turrets of human existence, across its drawhridges and over its wide plains. Brave Knights go forth, whilst fair Ladies in their own feminine sphere, face equally vital emergencies. There is something of the royal castles of old in our own High School, and up its stone staircase, these four years past, modern Knights and Ladies have gone in regal procession. Now comes that hour of parting, when we go our seps arate ways, and this historic document, the Oracle, is the one tie which hinds us together in memory. A generation from now, the faded pages and their shadows of loved faces will recall, to the echo of martial music, golden Yesterdays, and a swift vision of Orange and Black, flying at the topmost peak of our Castle o' Dreams. W'e all realized that we were taking another step toward success-but what a step! The sudden change of environment so bewildered and overwhelmed us that we could take but little part in the school activities. However, we did contribute members to the orchestra, and some from among our number even dared to venture into fraternities. Thinking ourselves a necessary part of the school life, we could not understand why the seniors should insist upon reminding us that the 'lyoung'uns should be seen and not heard. It seemed that they did crush us unmercifully, but we could still hold up our heads in hopeful anticipation as we .began our second year as- SOPHOMORICS The seniors at least tolerated us during this year of our course, but they never allowed us to forget our lowly position. However, we were determined to become a part of the School, and we took our places in the clubs and fraternities, while a few of our number represented the school on the gridiron and on the diamond. XVe overcame many of the obstacles of our first year, but what was this new hindrance to our progress? Geometry! Such a conglomeration of figures seemed unconquerable, but we lived through it, only to realiie that half our course was completed, and that we were at last- 44 THE ORACLE-NINETEEN HUNDRED TWENTY-EIGHT Juuioizs Ah! VVe were at last receiving our due respect, and we took our places as vice-presidents of the school affairs. The seniors even conde- scended to take us into their confidence and to impart to us a bit of their long-stored wisdom. VVe became more and more enthusiastic, and members of our class might be found in nearly every field of activity. VVe were not the students of two years since-we were slowly acquiring a dignity rivaled only by that of the seniors. An eventful and active year rushed us into the realization that we had attained our goal, and were-- SICNIORS YVe are the wise and the dignified! VVe are the presidents and leaders in school affairs! YVe surpass all in the various fields of activity. We are proud as we point the way to our juniors. But the terrible realiza- tion is suddenly thrust upon us! One short year left! Think what that means to us! Shall we, in the course of this short year, grasp such oppor- tunities as will insure our future success? Never before have we truly appreciated the experiences of four pleasant years of high school life, Never before have we realized that we shall be well on the road to for- tune and widely scattered! This year, two very outstanding features have been effected. For the first time in its history, the General Organization has established two student scholarships, of one hundred fifty dollars each. This venture seems a most worthy one. Never before has the General Organization combined with the Board of liiducation of XVhite Plains in order to carry out any plans. lrlowever, the assembly in which the students were so highly entertained by the New York Symphony Orchestra was made pos- sible by the combined efforts of both groups. lVe feel proud of our General Organization, and of what it has done for us this year: and we feel that the confidence we placed in its president, Jack lVilliams, has been fully justified. 62 ' ' m1 1 Q. This is the first time such a decision has been made for any of the schools since the foundation of the league, seventeen years ago. lvhite Plains' third victory gives our school the trophy cup as a permanent possession. This cup has been contested for since 1921. Yonkers and lVhite Plains both had won twice before, while New Rochelle had not scored. The team this year consisted of the following: AHirmative- l.eonard Beck, Marie Houston, Joseph Vllman and Jane XVord, alternate: Negative-David Popper, Herbert lfreidman, Thomas Dufiield, and Nlal- colm Hoffman, alternate. Mr, Jolley, as usual, coached the team, and deserves much of the credit for the victory. The Poughkeepsie Debate N December ninth the lVhite Plains debating team journeyed to Poughkeepsie High School to contend with that school for the first time. Resolved: That the United States should withdraw their troops from Nicaragua immediately, was the question debated. White Plains, who upheld the atlirmative side, was represented by Leonard Beck, Herbert Freedman, Thomas Duflield, with Nlalcolm Holl- man as alternate. The closeness of the contest can be determined by the fact that one judge cast his vote in favor of Poughkeepsie, the second, for White Plainsg and the third did not wish to make a decision but said that in case of a tie between the other two judges he would cast his determining vote in favor of Poughkeepsie. The good showing of the XVhite Plains students must be attributed to Mr. Jolley, the able coach, who was not sparing of his time and effort in making an excellent team. 69 THE ORACLE-NINETEEN HUNDRED TWENTY-EIGHT I'l.AY CAST lfiusr Row--'l':1ylur, NV:-st, Iluvilznnl, l.cc, Arlannd, Mr. Jolley. The Commerce Club of the High School, through its oflicers fjohn Hynes, President, Eileen Kelleher, Vice-President: Henriette Fulle, Sec- retaryl, has secured the assistance and cooperation of the Exchange Club in helping to promote the personnel and placement work that will be carried on for the benefit of the present enrolled students as well as for the graduates of former years. The Exchange Club has appointed two of its members as a com- mittee to cooperate with the oflicers of the Commerce Club: Mr. A. K. Bowes, Vice-president and Cashier of the Peoples National Bank and Nlr. Richard H. Levet of the law firm of Ackerman aml Levet. The advice of these representative business men will help materially in the successful operation of the Employment Bureau. - The students at the High School have received the announcement of the plans with much interest. lVhile the Bureau has been in operation but a short time, the success thus far attained indicates that it is a much- needed service to the students who are seeking positions. The team entered the diamond with eight letter men from the previous year and with very promising new material. Our victory over Stamford in the first game started the boys on a successful season. It was in this initial game that Bravo Young, whose fine work none of us can forget, was rather seriously injured. In all, the team scored five victories, four defeats, with no ties. It defeated Stamford, Mount Vernon, Pelham, Gorton, and Port Chester, and lost to Concordia, New Rochelle, Yonkers, and Mamaroneck. At present, there are five fraternities and two sororities in the Council. 100 THE ORACLE-NINETEEN HUNDRED TWENTY-EIGHT . . . , hr.-u'i,n--I':ny, ilc llnrl, V5:ill:i-r. lioylc, Nl. llnusmn, Llnynl, ll. lluhlmzirnl. The brave heroes of the Business Board have overcome oppo- sition after opposition and have performed a great task which has aided in speeding this book unto its completion. Those of the Literary Staff have spent many hours, some joyful and others weary, in the attempt to produce a book which would be appreciated by the majority. Great credit is due Joseph Ullman and Leonard Beck, who gave moments from their busy days in order to write the ballads which have done their share in portraying our idea of chivalry. We wish also to thank heartily Mr. Larned for his numerous ideas in connection with the Art work and for his interest in the welfare of the book from beginning to end. To the business men of VVhite Plains our appreciation is gratefully acknowledged. The compiling and editing could not have been accomplished without the generous assistance of Mr. Heine, the printer, Mr. Maier, the en- graverg and the White Studio with its excellent photography and courteous business relations. We are greatly indebted to Miss Cudworth and Mr. Stearns, who, aided by Miss Fearon, gave their valuable time and efforts in helping the Seniors produce the year book. VVe are very grateful to all who have helped in any way to bring success to the Oracle and to the bearers of chivalry.
