THE ORACLE 1923 Dedication This 1023 Oracle is respectfully dedicated to William Lynn Houseman our Principal and Friend, in appreciation of the many years of faithful service he has rendered our Alina Mater TUE Cl ASS OF ’23 TTTTTnntt ORACLE BOARD ORACLE BOARD Editor An-Chief.....................................Gordon B. Briante Louis Fourcade Karl Kristiansen Mabel Johnson Burton M. Hovey, Jr. Foreword ®HEN THESE “DAYS OF GLADNESS 'NEATH the Orange and the Black have BECOME BUT VAGUE REMEMBRANCES OF THE PAST, AND THE ONCE FAMILIAR FACES ARE BUT DIMLY RECALLED THROUGH THE INTERVEN- ING YEARS, MAY YOU, THE MEMBERS OF THE Class of ’23, turn to this, your Oracle, and RE-LIVE FOR AWHILE YOUTHFUL ACHIEVEMENTS AND SUCCESSES; AND MAY THE SPIRIT OF WHITE Plains High School so illuminate these PAGES AND RE-KINDLE IN YOU THE IDEALS OF your Alma Mater, that you may have a new BIRTH OF DETERMINATION TO DEDICATE YOUR LIVES TO SERVING YOUR FELLOW MEN. The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three CHE Oracle Board of the Class of '23 has dedicated its supreme efforts to producing a better Oracle than ever before. You, the readers of this book, are the judges. It is yours to judge in what measure we have failed or succeeded. If success is ours, what has been a happy anticipation will become a joyful reality. But whether we have failed or succeeded in our efforts, we have that great satisfaction which comes to all who have done their best to be of a real service to their school. THE GENERAL ORGANIZATION CHE year 1922-23 marks the fourth in the existence of the General Organization in White Plains High School. Every project sup- ported by the G. O. during this year has thrived and grown. In the fall of the year, the G. O. engaged the Colgate Musical Clubs for a most delightful and successful concert. The next achievement was something heretofore unheard of in the annals of the school. T his was the operetta, “The Bells of Beaujolais,” which, staged under the auspices of the G. O., played to enthusiastic and record-breaking audiences. Another thing worthy of note is the institution of the Service League which has proved very successful. This plan is something new and is doing much to solve the many difficult problems in regard to the halls. The Point System has also been greatly improved. One of the greatest services which the G. O. has rendered to the school is the publication and distribution of the handbook, that veritable treasure house of valuable information. While the General Organization is still in its infancy, it has grown and continues to grow so rapidly that we, its members, may well point to it with pride and predict for it a bright future. THE SERVICE LEAGUE IT has always been the supreme effort of each Senior Class to leave behind some worthy achievement, which in years to come, will, by its effect on the school, prove a permanent monument to that class. The class of ’23 can be found lacking in no respects,—no, not even in this, for it has been largely due to their leadership and conscientious support that a Service League has come into existence in White Plains High School. The Service League is one of the oldest and most successful attempts at student self-government. This League has been in our school only twelve w’eeks, and in this short time it has exceeded the highest expecta- tions of any. For those who are not acquainted with the principle and w'ork of the Service League, this attempt at a definition has been submitted. The Service League is a group of volunteer students w'ith several faculty ad- visors, who with the push, vigor and original viewpoint of youth, coupled with the experience and straight thinking ability of the faculty, are striving to solve for both, the problems of both. 8 The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three Fmst Row (Left to right)—Johnson, Piatti, Behm, Overton, Burke, MacSeal. Class $orm By Florence Buckbee Farewell to thee, dear High School, Our time has come to part; If we must play the “Game of Life,” It’s time for us to start. Four years ago as Freshmen VVe entered in these halls; Events of joy and sadness We’ve had within thy walls. And now as worthy Seniors Our sheepskins we have won; Our days with thee are ended, Life’s battle’s just begun! We go to climb “Fame’s Ladder,” And some will reach the top; The start they made in High School The years can never stop. We turn our mem’ries backward Upon these last four years, And our hearts are filled with sadness, Our eyes brim o’er with tears. So good-bye, Alma Mater, We must take leave of thee; Our work here is completed; Adieu, says Twenty-three! 42 The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three l!?tstorj) of tfjt Claes of 23 Zt)e ifrestyman gear OUR class entered the White Plains High School in September, 1919. To our young minds it was one of the most distinguished classes that ever was admitted to that institution. Unfortunately for us, the upper classmen were not of the same mind as we were. As a consequence of this difference in viewpoint much distress and woe were brought down upon our heads. Early in the year we began to show our interest in the school by furnishing about ten men for the football squad, two of whom secured positions on the varsity. In the other three sports, basketball, baseball and track, we did equally well. As we were still children in the eyes of our elders, we were not allow'ed to take part in any of the social affairs of the year, but were advised to study and to study hard. Following this advice, most of us were able to get through the year with satisfactory marks, thus proving to the faculty that our brains were beginning to show signs of life. It befell our good fortune that the General Organization was formed in this year. As the purposes of this organization were quite unknown when it was first proposed, there was consequently much discussion con- cerning the advisability of such a union of the various activities of the school. When the student body, however, realized to what a great extent this organization would benefit the school, and how the activities would bloom under its guidance, they heartily favored it. We, as a class, did all in our power to help its growth. When school closed in June we were, to be sure, quite fatigued; but we had lost none of our determination to return in the fall and to do our bit by promoting all the interests of the school. € ur £ opljomore gear gFTER two months of leisure and rest we returned to school with renewed energy, resolving to undertake our duties as good sopho- mores should. We spent the first week mainly in telling our fellow students of our numerous summer love affairs, or of our thrilling experiences in the mountains, etc. As soon as we had related all our stories, and, for the most part, had succeeded in making liars of ourselves, we began to settle down for a long winter's work. Autumn brought with it the appeal for members of the General Organization. In response to this appeal, within two weeks, approxi- mately ninety-five per cent of the student body were enrolled in its ranks. 43 The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three By the time this campaign was brought to an end, the football team was rounding into shape. About fifteen of our classmates had responded to the call for candidates. The other classes were just as well represented. We started the season off by defeating the Alumni, and continuing through- out our schedule without a defeat, securing as a result of this fine showing, the W. I. A. A. football championship. In basketball the class showed up remarkably well. The interclass games resulted in the victory of the Seniors, but with our class a very close second. This victory of the Seniors is something which puzzles us to this day. On the Girls' Basketball team two of our class held positions. Along with sweet springtime came the baseball season. Our class was very well represented on this squad, but even with these able repre- sentatives, the team did not have a very successful season. Early in May we held the Sophomore Hop at which many of us, for the first time, tasted of the delights and embarrassments of dancing and mingling with the fair sex. At the close of our Sophomore year we had begun to realize the wonderful advantages of a high school education, and we left school resolved to make the best of them during the two years that remained before us. ZA)t junior f ear HGAIN a summer had passed. That we had all enjoyed a de- lightful vacation was very evident, being noticed both by our phy- sical and social developments. As we grouped in the halls on our return to school, one could not help noticing the change that had come over the members of our class. We were beginning to assume the aspects of leadership. No longer were we satisfied to be followers; it was our determination to become leaders, and with this determination foremost in mind we started forth on our third year at White Plains High School. In football the team tried their best to capture a championship, but in vain. Dame Fortune must have decreed that no more football cham- pionships were to be bestowed, for a few years, on our school. But despite the decrees of Dame Fortune, our school succeeded in winning two championships. The credit for one of these is due to the Girls’ Basketball team. This team was one of the finest girls’ teams in the state. It easily defeated all opponents, thus winning the county cham- pionship. On this team were three of our class, of which we are highly proud. Our debating team brought home the other championship. After eight weeks of severe training, under the excellent coaching of Mr. Jolley, our teams, in the annual Triangular Debate, won the championship of the county. Our class boasts of four members of these teams. The first signs of spring ushered in the baseball season. This season, 44 The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three similar to the football, was not a very successful one. Later in the spring came the Junior Prom, that grand event in the lives of all Juniors when they are able to act as hosts to the upper classmen. To prove our superior- ity over other classes, we succeeded in making this the biggest and best prom ever held. Soon after the prom school closed, but we who left at this, the end of our third year at White Plains High School, were far wiser than when we had entered this institution. Two short months would rapidly pass and then we would return to our school as its leaders. We had realized that during this coming Senior year our qualities of initiative, responsibility and leadership would be put to the final test. With this foremost in mind we resolved to dedicate our best efforts to developing, during the summer, our minds as well as our bodies. Mentor £ ear gND now the pendulum of time has completed its four years’ swing. We are Seniors, the leaders of the school, and all which this important declaration should imply. We have striven to bear manfully our share of the school activities, and to have been, if but a small, a most serviceable cog in the operation of the school machinery. The traditions and high standing of our school we hold dear, and have, to the best of our ability, endeavored to uphold and strengthen them. We have come to regard our faculty as friendly beacons, guiding us safely along the highway of knowledge; not as mere danger signals warning us of our scholastic standings. We have arrived at the realization that our asso- ciation together in White Plains High School has been a real and vital influence in our lives, and that we have had bestowed upon us the priceless gift of knowledge, with which, as we journey along through life, we may be better fitted to be of some real service to our fellow men. To those who have borne more of the responsibilities and burdens of our classes than others comes the reward that service by its doing pays the doer. We now are about to leave this school, but though our paths lead us to the ends of the earth, our minds and thoughts shall ever be near and “our memories turn back to recall the days of gladness 'neath the Orange and the Black.” 45 I he Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three Class Characteristics The lowly Juniors thus decide The following lilies on these reside: Popular Boy—RAYMOND CLARK. The question for debate was “Resolved, that the Allied and Asso- ciated Powers should mutually cancel the debts incurred by their govern- ments during the World War.” With four weeks of hard training our teams succeeded in working up some very strong arguments. In the near future the club intends to install a high-powered transmitting set, with which our school will be placed indelibly on the wireless map. 63 The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three First Row (Left to right)—Thrall, Hart, Bannister, Blumenthal, Goldman, Skelley, Donlan, Naidich, Renino, Smith, Rhode, Miehaelian. D. Diehl CHE orchestra has progressed with great strides this year, ren- dering some of the best selections with splendid observance of technique and expression. Mr. Diehl has worked thoroughly with the members and his efforts have been rewarded, as shown by the success of the “Operetta,” which was dependent on the orchestra. At the time of the Exposition at the State Armory, the orchestra was among the many musical organizations which played there. It also proved a large figurehead on the Easter program, rendering some very beautiful pieces. A large repertoire has been purchased this year and has been well worth while. All the members of the orchestra have co-operated heartily with Mr. Diehl in bringing the best music to the fore. 64 The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three President..........................................Brenneman Quereau Secretary.........................................................Walter McKee Librarian..........................................................Maude Gilbert Cl)C i6ant ----rf'UST one year has passed since the formation of the Band, yet it O 1 seems unbelievable that in such a short time an organization W could improve to such a remarkable degree. The Band and its leader, Mr. Diehl, are the boasts of the school. Much credit also is due Mr. Gilbert and Mr. Baldwin for their excellent coaching. By means of the Spring Festival of Music the Band has been entirely equipped with the best of uniforms. In addition to this, it has by numerous public appearances been able to purchase several fine instruments. Last fall it added greatly to the attractiveness of the football season by appearing at some of the games. This spring it held its Second Annual Concert, which proved very successful both financially and musically. This Band undoubtedly ranks among the best of high school bands. 65 The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three ©prrrtta HIS year has witnessed the institution of an operetta in the { social life of our school. This operetta, “The Bells of Beau- jolais,” met with such a hearty reception from the citizens of White Plains, that it has been decided to make it an annual affair. Much credit is due to Mr. Jolley and to Mr. Diehl for their excellent coaching and untiring enthusiasm. Credit is due also to many members of our faculty and student body, who in a large measure served to make it the success it was. 66 a V| Cl)f Wbtte plains g. JW. C. a. HE Y. M. C. A., largely through the medium of the Hi-Y Clubs, has rendered our school invaluable service during the past year. Among these many services, too numerous to list here, we find the establishment of a Go-to-College Week, the first instituted in the country; the promotion of a Father and Son Night, and the formation of a Girls’ Hi-Y Club with a day set aside for their exclusive use of the building. Furthermore, the Y. M. C. A. has placed its gymnasium at the disposal of the various athletic departments of our school. The Y. M. C. A. is becoming, and ought to be, a living influence in our High School, and as each year passes it witnesses the closer uniting of these organizations. It was an even exchange though,—they gave us a dance for the game. 29— The Executive Council meets for the first time to plan our future. 30— White Plains vs. Nyack. Owing to numerous injuries to some of our stars, and the rigid rules of the Eligibility Committee, the squad lacked several of last year’s vet- erans. But every cloud has its silver lining. Even so, this season was not without its advantages, for it developed many promising players, most of whom have two or three years of high school remaining before them. This fact causes us to banish all of our doubts and worries, and to look to the future with strong faith in these younger members of our school. The team was ruled practically by one motto—“Sportsmanship.” Throughout the season there was never a sign that led any referee to think that White Plains was fighting unfairly. Nothing greater than this can be said for any team, for, after all, victory is only a secondary matter. Every man on our team fought hard, but fought fairly, and a team com- posed of such men, even though lacking in weight and experience, could not but arouse our highest admiration and respect. The following men received their letters: 1. Raymond Clark Captain, ’22. 2. Flavius Shedden Captain, ’23. 3. Alfred Mitchell 4. Lester Flew ellyn 5. Devin Garrity 6. Harry Kaufmann 7. If they did not win, they did the next best thing—they put up « good fight. As only one man of last year’s squad returned to school in the fall, Coach Oktavec’s main object was to develop a strong team for next year. With so many inexperienced players no one could have done better. Next year, how- ever, we look forward to an excellent team, such as our school has not witnessed for many years. This prophecy is not founded on a false foundation, for in the last few games of the season, more particularly in the last one, our team showed a marvelous degree of improvement in all departments of the game. Crack CHE 1922 track season produced only five letter men. I he sea- son, on the whole, was very unsuccessful. This was not due to any lack of effort on the part of the team, but to unfortunate circum- stances in general. This year with three letter men back, a reawakened enthusiasm in this sport, and an excellent coaching staff, the season should be the reverse of last year’s. However, no prophecies are made. The team asks only for an active backing by the whole school, and a fighting chance, for each track candidate is working with a steady, whole-hearted deter- mination to bring home a championship. He—“Dairy maid in a candy kitchen? What do you do?” She (bashfully)—“Milk chocolates.” He—“What’s that horrible squeak in the rear of the car?” She—“Oh, that’s the pig iron in the rear axle.” Another Atrocity The latest song hit from Dixieland: “Oh, father's joined the Ku Klux Klan. and swiped our last clean sheet.” Farmer—“How’d you get the puncture?” Autoist—“Ran over a chicken with pin- feathers.” Teacher—“What is a pretzel?” Bright Kid—“A pretzel is a doughnut gone crazy.” He was newly arrived in this country and was none too familiar with the use of the telephone, so he took down the receiver and demanded, “Aye vant to talk to my wife!” Central’s voice came back sweetly, “Num- ber, please?” “Oh,” he replied, perfectly willing to help out, “she bane my second vun.” “John is knock-kneed and his wife is bow-legged,” remarked the aunt. “Whom do you think their boy will take after when he is older?” “Probably after some girl,” replied the uncle. An old colored man was burning dead grass when a “wise guy” stopped and said: “You’re foolish to do that. Uncle Eb; it will make that meadow as black as you are.” “Don’t you worry ’bout dat, sah,” re- sponded Uncle Eb. “Dat grass’ll grow out and be as green as you is.” “She has went, Her has gone, Her have left us all alone. She can never come to we, Us can never got to she. It cannot was.” He—“What w'as that noise?” She—“Oh. that’s just father dropping hints. Still Another Infant Prodigy John Adams, janitor, master mechanic’s office, Chicago, whose application for pen- sion has been approved by the pension board, was born in England in 1888 and has been in the service of the Rock Island lines since April of that year. Woman—“If you don’t leave at once, I’ll call my husband: he used to play football at Harvard.” Tramp—“Lady, if you love your husband, don’t; I used to play with Yale.” To wed or not to wed, that is the ques- tion. Whether ’tis better to remain single, and disappoint a number of women for a time, or marry and disappoint one woman for life. Man (coming to cafe)—“Waiter, I smell fresh paint.” Waiter (pointing to a table where two young ladies sat)—“Hush, they’ll be gone in a minute.” The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three Sport knickers are a specialty with us. Their popularity is per- manently assured because eminently practical and in keeping with the times. All wool tweed knickers in attractive colorings. We have no money to lend for speculation or non-essentials, but any regular depositor with a legitimate proposition is sure to receive the most careful consideration at our hands. □ The Citizens Bank 130 Main Street White Plains, New York. A STRONG LOCAL BANK SERVING LOCAL NEEDS The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three Curious Reflex “The human anatomy is a wonderful bit of mechanism.” “Yes, pat one kind of man on the back and you’ll make his head swell.” Shocking “I saw something last night I will never get over.” “Indeed?” “Yes, the moon.” Father—“Hasn’t that young man gone home yet?” Young Thing—“No, dad, but I've got him going.” “So your father is ill. I hope it is noth- ing catching.” “So do I. The doctor says he is suffer- ing from overwork.” More Floors Needed A traveler called at a Paris hotel and inquired what the rates were. “Thirty francs for a room on the first floor, twenty francs for the second, and ten francs for the third,” said the proprietor.” The traveler thanked him and turned to go. “Doesn’t that please you?” asked the hotel proprietor. “Yes, your prices arc all right, said the traveler, “but your hotel isn’t high enough.” Not Themselves She—“I don’t care for men. In fact, I’ve said ‘No’ to several of them.” He—“What were they selling?” The Difference Teacher—“What was there about George Washington which distinguished him from all other famous Americans?” “He didn’t lie,” was the prompt reply. A Good Word For It “Don’t kick about our coffee. You may be old and weak yourself some day.”—Sign in a restaurant. Necessary Evil “So you wish to become my son-in-law?” “No, I don’t. But if I marry your daugh- ter, I don’t see how I can get out of it.” Passions are likened unto doughnuts: They are usually built upon nothing; Travel in circles; Some are well done, others half-baked, But all impair the appetite. Mary had a little lamb, Her father shot it dead; And now it goes to school with her Between two hunks of bread. Sunday School Teacher—“Ernest, who defeated the Philistines?” Ernest—“Dunno. I don’t follow none o’ them bush league teams.” Don’t cry, little boy. You’ll get your reward in the end.” “S’pose so. That’s where I always get it.” “I think I should have named my boy Flannel.” “Why?” “He shrinks from washing.” Patient (Rushing into doctor’s office)— “Doctor, quick! I’m going to croak!” Doctor—“What seems to be the trouble?” Patient—“I’ve swallowed a frog.” An Oversight He—“When I married you, I had bound- less adoration for you. I could fairly have devoured you. Now I regret that I didn’t.” The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three Graduation Time The time in the young folks' life when they begin to look to the future. The time when they must choose for themselves—not only what they will do and where they will go,—but also what they will wear. Choosing your clothes here is a wise choice. The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty -Three To The Orange Board The Orange Board sits about its table round, Reading the strangest stuff that can be found, Ignored are writers of another sphere. Whose meaning, vulgarly, is always clear. Here their one rule is, and be so it should. “If we can’t understand this stuff, it’s good!” An editor, with eager eye, now spots A poem, the i’s of which are lacking dots. “Something symbolic, doubtless,” murmurs he, And straightaway names it, “Can Potatoes Sec?” Then cry they all, in wisdom’s brother- hood, “If we can’t understand this stuff, it’s good!” “Can Love, as ashes doth the snow, but Death?” This is the line which takes away the breath Of e’en these learned men. “Genius!” cry they. “How well he knows not what he wants to say! Amazing! To be so misunderstood Is all that we require. This must be good!” The years roll by, but this tradition stays To keep successive boards among the maze Of labyrinth words and forms of verse. Which, let us pray, will keep becoming worse Until some heretic, too surfeited, will shout, “If we can’t understand it, throw it out!” Just Right “Was there much of a gathering to see the ship start?” asked Colonel Edwards, whose servant had been down to the wharf. “Yassah. Dey was a monst’ous lot o’ folks.” “And was the crowd tumultuous or quiet?” “Well, suh,” replied Mose doubtfully, “dey wasn’t zactly too multuous, I shouldn’t say. Nossuh, dey was just about multuous enough fo’ de occasion.” Quiet “Johnny,” said the boy’s mother, “I hope you have been a nice quiet boy at school this afternoon.” “That’s what I was,” answered Johnny. ‘I went to sleep right after lunch, and the teacher said she’d w’hip any boy in the room who woke me up.” Nothing Much “Pa, what are ancestors?” “Well, my son, I’m one of yours. Your grandpa is another.” “Oh! Then why is it people brag about them?” Quick Lunch He was unaware of the eccentricities to be found in Western Canada. He entered what was apparently the only hotel in the place. After ushering him to a table and giving him the usual glass of water, the waiter inquired: “Dinner is served, sir. Will you have sausages on toast?” “No, I never eat ’em.” “In that case, sir,” replied the waiter, moving away, “dinner is over.” Fishy Record First Stenog. (reading)—“Think of those Spaniards going 3,000 miles on a galleon!” Second Stenog.—“Aw, forget it. Yuh can’t believe all yuh hear about them for- eign cars.” Room For More “How’s collections at your church, Brud- der Jackson?” “Well, we ain’t nebber had to stop in de middle of a collection to go an’ empty de box.” Grace—What did Bill do to get kicked out of college? Dave—Nothing. The Oracle — Nineteen Hdndred and Twenty-Three The Home Savings Bank WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK OPEN EVERY BUSI- NESS DAY FROM 9:00 A. M. TO 3:00 P. M. After explaining the first sign, she said: “Now, children, what do you say; if 1 means forte, what does ff mean?” “Eighty!” shouted one enthusiastic pupil. A Touch of Local Color Rea—“Liza. what fo’ yo’ buy dat odder box of shoe blackin’?” Liza—“Go on, dat ain’t shoe blackin’; dat’s my massage cream.” A Grave Mistake “Hello! I want to order a box for to- morrow.” “What size?” “There will be six of us in the party.” “But they only come in single sizes—we’ll have to have it made special.” “Is this the Lyceum?” “No, this is the undertaker.” Echo Answers Why His friends could give no reason U'hy he should have committed suicide. He was single. The Lid Was Off She—“You raised your hat to that girl who passed. You don’t know her, do you?” He—“No, but my brother does and this is his hat.” Champion Adjuster Lloyd George must be given credit for one thing—he settled the Irish question of tener than any other Prime Minister. The Way of a Maid With a Man He— Would you accept a pet monkey?” She—“Oh, I would have to ask father. This is so sudden.” Nosed Out Teacher (to the class)—“Does anyone know how iron was discovered? Pupil—“Yes, sir.” Teacher—“Well, tell this class your in- formation.” Pupil—“Please sir, they smelt it.” Mary's Appetite Mary had a little lamb, You’ve heard this tale before; But have you heard she passed her plate And had a little more? Stands she there and gaily chatters Of refreshments built for two, Wonders he, with two lead nickels, How to bluff the evening through. Fine Principles “Where did you absorb those fine prin- ciples of yours—at your mother’s knee?” “No. Over my father’s.” “Is one liable to catch a disease in Colo- rado?” “No, silly.” “Well, Dave said he was going there for tuberculosis.” Sky Pilot—You know you are to be hanged on Monday. Have you anything to say for yourself? Passenger—Well, guv’nor, all I can say is, it’s a mighty poor way to start the week. “Hey, waiter! There’s a piece of steel in this bacon. What’s the matter?” Dunno. Must be a razor-backed hog.” “I have bad news for you, Clarence.” “So?” “Yes, I visited a fortune teller’s this aft- ernoon and she told me that I am going to marry a handsome man.” The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three Within Bounds While making a visit to New York, a man unmistakably of country origin was knocked down in the street by an automo- bile. A crowd instantly surrounded him with condolences and questions. “Are you hurt, my friend?” kindly asked a gentleman, who was first among the rescuers, as he helped the stranger to his feet and brushed the mud and dust from his clothes. “Well,” came the cautious reply of one evidently given to non-committal brevity of speech, “it ain’t done me no good.” Ain’t Nature Just Grand? For about an hour a man from Denver had been boasting to an Irishman about the magnificence of the Rocky Mountains. “You seem mighty proud ov thim moun- tains, the Irishman observed. “You bet I am,” replied the man from Denver. “And I ought to be, since my an- cestors built them.” The Irishman thought this over for a few moments and then asked, “Did you ever happen to hear of the Dead Sea in—in one ov the old countries?” “Yes, indeed,” replied the man from Den- ver, “I know all about the Dead Sea. “Well, did you happen to know that me great-grandfather killed the thing?” Com pari nc Notes “My Sally’s done well for ’erself, Mrs. Higson,” said Mrs. Earle proudly. “Her Bert’s father was a banister of the law.” Mrs. Higson bridled. “I don’t know nothing about your banisters,” she retorted, “but my Gertie’s Alfred has a brother that’s a corridor in the navy.” Oscar—I didn’t get to bed till 4 o’clock. Oswald—What for? Oscar—Four A. M., you darn fool. Jane—“Where did Henry Cabot Lodge? Harold—“At Robert W. Chambers.” Lincoln Thought of a Name In 1864 some gentlemen who had just re- turned from a trip through the West came to Washington and went to call on Lincoln. During their visit one of the men spoke of a body of water in Nebraska which bore an Indian name. “1 can not recall its name now,” he said in a vexed tone, “but it signified ’weeping water.’ ” President Lincoln instantly responded: “As ‘laughing water,’ according to Long- fellow, is ‘Minnehaha,’ this evidently should be ‘Minneboohoo.’” Another Maxim Gone Wronc Bix—“Two wrongs don’t make a right, and to that rule there’s no exception.” Dix—“Oh, I don’t know. If your clock is an hour fast, it is wrong, and if you set it forward eleven hours more you of course make it wronger, but at the same time you make it right.” Bird—“I’ll bet that old hen is hard- headed.” Duck—“Hard-headed, huh? Why, she’s the original Plymouth Rock. Polite A little boy had returned home after having been out to dinner and his mother said: “I trust that when it came to the extra helpings you had manners enough to say ‘No’?” “Yes, Ma, I said ‘No’ several times.” “You did?” exclaimed his mother, skep- tically. “Yes, Mrs. Stout kept asking me if I had had enough!” Old Friends “I tell you,” said Pat, “the ould friends are the best, after all, and I can prove it.” “How? “Where can you find a new friend that has stood by you as long as the ould ones have?” The Oracle — Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Three Compliments of FFARRINGTON M.
