CAPTAIN ROBERT H. GORMLEY Captain Robert H. Gormley relieved Captain Brenner as Commanding Officer of WHITE PLAINS on December IO. 1969. in the Sea of japan. Captain GOfrDlCy's last assignment prior to WHITE PLAINS was with Commander Attack Carrier Striking Force Seventh Fleet CTask Force 77D where he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans. Prior to that he was assigned to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense CSystems Analysisj in Washington, D.C. Captain Gormley was born in Ventura, California, and attended elementary and secondary schools in California. While a student at the University of Texas, he received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and was graduated in 1947. Following commissioning he served in the destroyer PUTNAM in the Atlantic Fleet. Subsequent to being designated a Naval Aviator in 1950, Captain Gormley served in a variety of assignments: carrier-based anti-submarine and fighter squadrons, jet training units, and on the staffs of the Commanders of Carrier Division Seventeen, the Operational Test and Evaluation Force and the Atlantic Fleet's training air group. In 1965 Captain Gormley assumed Command of Fighter Squadron Forty-One. Under his command the squadron, flying the F-4B Phantom II jet fighter-bomber, deployed to Southeast Asia on board the Attack Carrier INDEPENDENCE for combat air operations against North Vietnam. Sub- sequently Captain Gormley became Commander Attack Carrier Air Wing Seven in INDEPENDENCE. Captain Gormley has studied at both the Naval War College and Harvard University and received a Master's Degree from Harvard in 1963. Captain Gormley's personal decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star.
