Chiefs Start Running Wild Congratulations, is what was heard most of the time from Coach Curt Meek. The girls' and boys' track teams specialized in their own individual areas as a team. The boys seemed to dominate the field events with strong shows in the shot put, high jump, long jump, and occasionally the pole vault. While the girls were just the opposite with weak shows in field events, they made up for it in the running. With excellent speed and endurance, the girls' track team won the SJV league tournament and had four individuals qualify for state at regionals. Upper — Junior Greg Swank tries to heave his best at the St. Joseph county meet. Lower Left — Junior Ted Boyer looks forward to the finish line as he is in some stiff competition with a Mendon Hornet. Lower Right — Junior Sean Troyer floats through the air with perfect form. A Record Season The girls track team strutted their stuff by breaking five school records. The two mile run and the four hundred meter dash were both broken by Stacey Kilburn; the 300 hundred meter low hurdles by Melanie Hoopes; the 800 meter run by Michelle Magill; and the mile relay by Kilburn, Magill, Hoopes and Mary Miller. The girls finished second at regionals with a stiff competition of eighteen teams. Congratulations were also in order for tieing with Constantine and Colon for the League Title. Early in the season both teams defeated the girls, and this showed great team work to defeat them at the meet.
