n ' ;.w I CONTENTS Introduction — 2 Seniors — 18 Student Life — 40 Sports — 58 Organizations — 92 Administration Faculty — 112 Underclassmen — 136 Retrospect — 170 Advertising — 176 WAHBEMEME - 1973 White Pigeon High School White Pigeon, Michigan Volume 22 It has been 100 years since the first group of seniors graduated from White Pigeon. Earlier graduating classes were small, as in the class of 1882 shown below. We plan on showing you a contrast between earlier times at White Pigeon, and those of today. Many of the activities of our earlier community are now best represented by the schools. Sports are no longer merely unorganized games played in the park or field. Our local band has long since moved from the bandstand in Wade Park to the better equiped, modern gymnasium. The next few pages will continue to show the contrasts and happenings which have affected our daily lives. Willie White Pigeon, son of the great Chief White Pigeon, is shown standing beside one of our most famous historical landmarks. Located on the corner of U.S. 12 and U.S. 131, it was erected at the sight of his noble father's death. Representing more of the old landmarks is Henry's Shop , judged to be the oldest building in White Pigeon. It has since been lost along with many other beloved treasures. It seems to have collapsed along with Henry many long years ago. TRANSPORTATION Fast Delivery Service was the motto used in the old days by Ed Roderick in his home-made cart. He was the head grocer on South Kalamazoo Street, later elected president of the local Bank. His climb to success and prestige was a realization of the true American Dream. The horse is not dead, but it's a fact that they're not frequently seen on our highways. Simple walking and travel by trains are declining too. We still use the horse and train, and occasionally walk, but these methods of travel have been expanded by more sophisticated modes of transportation. All of which are faster and more efficient than our previous three, but u nfortu-nately a little more hazardous to one's health. Music, Music, Music, fills the air at the football fields, the gymnasium, and the streets of White Pigeon. Band students have proudly developed this part of the school's activities over the past 100 years to the point where now they are one of the finest bands in the area. MUSIC The happenings that have effected White Pigeon's growth and have plagued our city are exemplified by these photographs. The trains that met, and the train that literally ran into White Pigeon are only two of the bizzare accidents that changed the town. The greatest tragedy we have recorded was the near-total destruction of White Pigeon in the fire of 1906. In the picture, top left, we see the growing metropolis very much alive; and in the picture, bottom right, the contrasting desolation and emptiness of a destroyed city. Recreation, though always entertaining, undoubtedly belongs to the time. Pictured above are two vintage bathing beauties circa 1894, surprised at Blanchard's Landing on Klinger Lake. Compare these lovely creatures to the sun worshipers of today!!! RECREATION W 13 Entertainment like other things in life has changed significantly. Nowadays, what do you like? Music, plays, comedy; switched on, turned on, or mixed-up? The choice is at your fingertips. We don't claim stage personalities such as Richard Rogers (pictured), who was seen in a number of professional minstrel shows at the turn of the century, or the Peak Sisters, who entertained locally in 1887, but we do claim the ability to offer more varied opportunities to success with greater chances of new and exhilerating experiences. ENTERTAINMENT are the community, from yesteryear's superintendent Joseph G. Plowman, who designed the Brick School that stood in Wade Park, and the graduating class of 1896 to their counter matter what the time, place, or date, the fact remains the same, people are Hi the community. ■ Senior officers: Mr. Snook, Sue Hopkins, Mark Granning, Carla Creakbaum, Carol Cumberworth, Mr. Stahly.
