Graduating seniors filled with valued memories, both pleasant and adverse, prepare to meet a world which is far more complicated and obscure than the school from which they came. The realities of life present many challenges and frustrations. Pleasure is oftentime mixed with tragedy. Such tragedy has touched us this past year with the untimely deaths of Ken Bennett and Kay Massey. While attending high school these two young people established many friends among the student body and faculty. Their unfortunate deaths have left a void in our hearts, but we can and will retain many pleasant memories. It is with this hope that the Publications Staff dedicates the 1970 WAHBEMEME to the memory of these two fallen youths who too, began with a bright spirit for the future. Kay and Kenny were both active in extra-curricular activities at White Pigeon. Ken was a photographer for the annual staff in 1968. He was a member of the 1968 football team, that went undefeated. As manager of the Low Ebb, a local rock group, Ken's help contributed to their success. Kay was a member of the National Honor Society and in her senior year she was the secretary of that organization. Kay was a writer and the Business Manager for the annual staff in 1969. Kay also graduated in the top third of the Class of '69. For those who have lost someone dear to them, whether it be on our highways or protecting our country in Viet-Nam, we share your sympathy and grief. h Memory Of. Principal Fred A. Snell, as High School Principal, with sincere regret. Mr. Snell has served the school district for six years, bringing about many innovations in the curriculum and the operational procedures of the high school. He served us greatly in the equipping of the new high school from the planning stages through to completion and operation until this time. We wish him every success in his new endeavors and publicly thank him for his work during the six years he has served our district. We feel certain that the services of Fred Snell will be missed considerably by everyone who knows him and have worked with him in any capacity. The purpose of publications each year is to inform the students of what has happened during their school year. The publications staff attempts to reach this goal by producing a school newspaper each month and the annual at the end of the school year. Many hours were spent gathering information, taking pictures, writing up articles, selling advertisements and subscriptions, and finally producing the Wahbememe. The publications staff has worked very hard to capture the events of your school year. We hope that the students will enjoy looking back to these memories and that we have achieved our goal. Science Club The senior high science club this year contained thirteen members. These members joined the club for the purpose of increasing their knowledge in science. The science club is not particularly an honor organization, but one which teaches its members how to derive knowledge from everyday life by observing the world about them. They learn how to system-ize their facts, principals, and methods and acquaint themselves with new techniques which they can apply to science. The science club's biggest undertaking each year is to sponsor the science fair. It is up to them to raise interest in the fair, lay the ground work, conduct it, and supply projects themselves. Each year the science fair increases in popularity due largely to the members of the science club and their sponsor, Mr. Bargewell. __ 45 1st Row: Pat Davis, Sec. Spanish Club The Spanish Club is made up of young people who are taking Spanish in high school. The purpose of the club is to broaden our horizons. During our meetings we try to learn more about the Spanish culture of all Spanish speaking countries. On April 8th of this school year, we had a party to celebrate Pan American Day. During this party we learned what Pan American Day was all about. We also played Spanish games and broke a pinata. This is what Spanish Club is all about. Through this club we gain more knowledge of different countries. 46 Plwto Club The photo club's purpose is to show the students how to take better pictures and to teach photo developing in a darkroom. The club supplies the equipment for the darkroom, which includes an enlarger and a contact printer, and materials to develop colored pictures. The club also has two 35mm cameras to loan to its members. The club had planned a field trip for this spring. They had a choice of either going to an Indian museum or to visit the Amish settlements in Northern Indiana to take pictures which show the Amish ways of life. The Photo Club sponsored a dance this faH to raise money for all their needed equipment. 1st Row: Mr. Bargwell, Sponsor; Tom Black, Secretary; Jim Loyer, President; Tom Cripe, Treasure; Mary Gordenier, Vice President. 2nd Row: John Witmer.Bob Nelson, Sonya Leeth, Marian Rexford, Sue Enix, Frank Anglemeyer, Absent, Tom Spoores. ' ' - — Zri-Hi-y Tri-Hi-Y is a YMCA club for high school girls. Members join the club seeking friendship, adventure, recreation, and inspiration. They seek to make living better for themselves, for their friends, and for their community. The club has an adult advisor, Mrs. Dobrowolski, whose responsibility is to help members select goals for positive, personal and group living. The purpose of the Tri-Hi-Y is To create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community, high standards of Christian character. The main project of the Tri-Hi-Y is the candy sales, which we conduct throughout the school year. This is a service for the students, which enables our club to make money to put into other worthwhile projects, such as World Service. World Service is a YMCA organization that gives money and aid to help the underprivileged areas and people of the world. 1st Row: Sharon Kathan, Jan Blue, Patty Platz, Chaplin; Becky Botts, Treas; Martha Deisler, Vice Pres; Karen Blonde, Pres; Jean Deisler, Sec; Mrs. Dowbrowolski, Sponsor; Terri Riley, Mary Nichols, Sandy Hopkisn. 2nd Row: Angie Holt, Patty Reynolds, Rhonda Johnson,Jackie Shaffer, Barb Stuck , Jan Danberry, Anna Marie Yoder, Gerri Miller, Sandy Kincaid, Connie Clark, Toni Lawson. 3rd Row: Sandy Deisler, Garnet Leeth, Ruthann Mack, Tonyia Miller, Cindy Strawser, Patty Miller, Patti Holdread, Del Mosier, Dale Bender, Jan Hausser, Kim Van Atta. 4th Row: Patty Davis, Denise Sigler, Janet Harnish, Bonnie Featherstone, Sue Nantkes, Nancy Miller, Sharon Wright, Deb Schott, Nancy Moffett, Brenda Hudnell, Kathy Walker. 5th Row: Barbra Becraft, Mary Shafer, Cyndy Flood, Diane Stuck, Diane Miller, Mary Ann Allison, Jo Schmeling, Diane West, Pam Stuck, Patty Ford. 1st Row: Mike Pendleton, Sec; Steve Miller, ftes.; Greg Siberry, Vice President; Jerry Lintz, Treas.; Bob Dutka, Chaplin. 2nd Row: Randy Lung, Mike Allan, Tom Cripe, Darryl Ely, Steve Hisey, Jim Loyer. 3rd Row: Dick Kidder, Steve Bendel, Tom Black, Bob Oldenburg, Jeff Bond, Bill Willis, Jim Blanchard, Ron Vellenga, Farrel Atherton. Sr. High Student Council The Student Council, as the student government made up entirely of the student elected representatives and officers, is one of the most respected and essential organizations. It is here that student complaints and requests are heard and acted upon. It is, also, an important link between administration and the pupils of our school. This year's Student Council made great gains in increasing student voice and authority in White Pigeon High School. It took over jurisdiction of the cheerleaders, placed student representatives on Faculty committees, (to give students better understanding and representation), authored revisions of the standing dress code and took the responsibility of enforcing it. Also initial steps were taken toward beautifying the Outdoor Court by extensive landscaping. All in all, a very progressive year! 50 Ur. .High Student Council The Jr. High Student Council operates basically like that of the senior high. Its members and officers are not appointees but are elected by their fellow students. The student council gives its members a chance to apply themselves to school projects and learn what it is like to run their own government. It is the first active governmental training that they come into contact with. Ski Club The winter months provided a season full of enjoyment for the members of the Ski Club this year. The first three outings to Swiss Valley consisted of three lessons on the art of skiing. The first lesson consisted of learning the meanings of signs, personal safety, and proper apparel. During the second and third lessons the fundamentals of skiing were taught on the beginners slope. When each individual skier could accomplish the beginners slope, the in-structer would sign the skiers ticket and he could advance to a larger slope. The Ski Club also took part in selling tickets for a Folk Festival at Glen Oaks Community College. The money collected from these projects will be put towards a weekend of skiing next year. 56 1st Row: Sharon Kathan, Mary Gordenier, Sec; Jim Blanchard, Pres.; Steve Miller, Vice Pres; Dale Bender, Treas.; Mrs. Thompson, Sponsor. 2nd Row: Karen Blonde, Barb Becraft, Jackie Blair, Vicki Harman, Marty Deisler, Becky Botts, Don Vellenga, Jan Danberry, Jackie Shafer. 3rd Row: Scott Sullenger, Dennis Ely, Randy Lung, Steve Weaver, Craig Biland, Bob Dutka, Steve Ripplinger, Jim Eisenberger. National Honor Society The National Honor Society is an honorary scholastic organization, and its purpose is to promote and recognize good scholarship, character, service, and leadership. A student must qualify in all four of these areas in order to become a member. During the past year the National Honor Society has performed many services besides their yearly dance. One project was to read to elementary students that were having trouble with reading. The Society also donated a Michigan historical book to the library. Towards the end of the year the National Honor Society sponsored a film on drugs and the affect in which it leaves you. As in the past years the National Honor Society held its annual induction services in front of the student body. Eighteen students were inducted on the above qualifications. Membership into the Society is the greatest honor that this school can bestow, and it indicates excellence of achievement of many fields of school endeavor. 57 1st Row: Vickie Nottoli, Marsha Podamajerski, Terri Comstock, Brenda Hudnell, Rhonda Johnson, Janice Maichen, Lori Maichen, Mrs. Herrmann, Sponsor. 2nd Row: April We agley, Dale Bender, Thereasa Fe Featherstone, Bonnie Featherstone, Janet Harnish, Jan Danberry, Cerri Miller. 3rd Row: Denise Sigler, Sherry Vellenga, Georgia Shultz, Martha Deisler, Rebecca Magner, Mable McCawley, Barb Becraft. 4th Row: Mike Pendleton, Pam Stuck, Diane Stuck, Jim Blanchard, Mary Anne Allison, Diane West, Patty Davis, Lynda Ford. The White Pigeon Jr. High Chorus was revived this year after a one year absence. Composed of twenty-six Jr. High girls and boys, the group also includes Mary Ann Allison, a senior, as their accompanist and with Mrs. Hermann as sponsor. Their opening performance this year was at the annual Christmas concert in December of 1969. The concert also included the Senior High Glee Club, the Madrigals, and the Junior and Senior Bands. For their part of the program the Jr. High Chorus sang two songs, GasuBanbino, and Birthday of a King. A short time later the chorus participated in a hayride for the purpose of singing Christmas carols. They toured the community spreading the spirit of Christmas. Afterwards, they had a party at the school. The Jr. High Chorus is glad they had the opportunity to sing as a group and participated in these two activities. 62 From Left: Brent Cummings, Mike Capp, Dave Lantz, Mrs. Shepherd, sponsor. Hr. High Science Club The main purpose of the Junior High Science Club is to stimulate interest in science. The club's membership is only open to Jr. High students. To obtain membership in the club, students have to write up an application for membership. The application is presented to the secretary and then it will be brought up at the next regular meeting. The club did most of their work at school, but they did make a field trip to Mile's Laboratory's where they went through the research laboratories. The season was climaxed when the Chiefs soundly defeated Centreville and went on to win the St. Joseph Valley Conference Championship for the second year in a row. The team barely missed qualifying for the state finals when they placed fourth at the Vicksburg Class-C Regionals. Our team's conference dual meet record was tops at 6 wins-1 loss. Sophomore, Jim Chamness, paced the varsity Chiefs in every meet of the year and picked up some handsome looking medals by placing high in several invitational runs. Steve Miller, Mitch Lyons, Mike Allen, Chuck Wilcox, Don Rush and Richard Kidder also turned in consistently good performances during the year. Dennis Ely, Malcom Pendleton, Darryl Ely, and Bob Oldenburg also earned their varsity letters. Things look very good for next year's White Pigeon Cross Country team as the varsity only lose two of their eleven lettermen due to graduation. The boys worked hard under the direction of Eric Lutz and Jerry Chamness to build a good team, and the result of this promise of more trophies for White Pigeon next year. It's very sad, this graduation day To watch friends depart And walk separate ways To pack memories away in the backs of our minds Of teachers, games, dates, and good times. You see School is like life, they're two of a kind Coming into either we have no choice But what we gain out of both We do have a voice . We've climbed quite a ways on the mountain of life And we're well-equipped to continue the climb So How many of us will reach the top ? And How many will fall with the passage of time? We know the world isn't so pretty out there. Posters and talk won't change it my friend. We must work hard if we are to find The peace longed for by the souls of all men. We can use what we've gained, in these school years of ours WE won't be like all others; The class of '70 will lead the way To better our lives, and the lives of our brothers. So don't cry, but laugh!!! We've just begun our journey, we're not through We've reached the foothills of our lives And the MOUNTAINS are in view. Mary Gordenier Class History As third in my class, I have the privilege of writing our class history. Once upon a time, way back in the year 1957, a small bunch of scared little kids who were to become the class of 70 started kindergarten. When we were in the third grade, we demonstrated our great musical talents in Harmony Band. A year later, the boys participated in Little League Basketball while the girls helped to cheer them on. Our fifth grade class visited the Constantine Creamery. We ended our elementary years with the annual pleasure of spending the day at Kellogg's in Battle Creek. We were now in Junior High. The old high school building seemed foreign to us at first, but we remember it well for all the fun we had there. Yes, it was seventh grade, and we met many new friends from Baldwin Prairie School. We also had our own basketball team and cheerleaders. We'll remember seventh grade well. That was the year the varsity basketball team won its first game after 61 straight losses. In the eighth grade, we became the first class to visit the Michigan State University Campus and the Capitol Building in Lansing. We sometimes wondered how we got here, but we were now in high school. Many new opportunities opened up for us, and we joined many clubs and participated in many activities. In this ninth grade our freshman team came in second in the Christmas Basketball Tournament. We also remember the hectic moving day when we moved from the old high school building to the new building across town. Our Sophomore year was highlighted by our undefeated football team that handily picked up the TOMAHAWK from Constantine. When we were Juniors we remember the success of our magazine sales and our Junior play, The Death and Life of Larry Benson. We recall how busy we were decorating the gym for the Junior-Senior Prom, entitled, With a Song In My Heart. It was a lot of headaches, but it was worth it. How could we ever forget the greatest Chiefs basketball team W.P.H.S. ever had? They made it all the way to the State semi-finals before losing. The cross-country team was also the best the school has ever seen. We made it all the way to the State Finals. We were now Seniors. Our experience at Government Day at Sturgis was one we shall never forget. It was a new experience for all of us. Our Senior Play. Get Witch Quick was a whooping. In the twilight of our Senior year, we departed on our long awaited Senior Trip to Washington D.C. It was an unforgettable experience. To climax our Senior year, there was the school production of My Fair Lady. This was a first for the school. Never before had members of all classes come together for a musical. We shall never forget the indescribable grandeur of it, especially those of us who were in it. Our high school days were brought to a close on June 4, 1970, on Graduation Day. Little did we visualize way back in 1957, that this Class of 1970 would be so great. So now as we go our separate ways, maybe never seeing each other again, let us always remember the precious moments and memories of the years at White Pigeon High School. May I wish the best of luck to all of you in the years to come. Bob Dutka 109 Class As an honor student in my class, I have the privilege of writing the class will. Crop after crop. Forever. It's the most advanced concept in forestry since we introduced tree farming 26 years ago. Under this plan, skilled men accelerate forest growth. They fertilize the soil, harrow the forest floor, sow new crops by air and thin out weaker trees to spur growth in more vigorous ones. They will do this on millions of acres to force the pace of growth. Ultimately, all seed used to plant Ad No 229—US 4 tVorirfffipon Dec ■ 1967 • Dec II 1967 • Stij'at f r,ng Pou Dec 16 1967 Pr p e i by Cote 6 Weber Inc • Port.end . Seattle • Tacoma . New York • San Fraoctco 154 new crops will come from genetically superior trees grown by our scientists in seed orchards. These genetic marvels will create the new High Yield Forest. It will be made up of super trees that grow taller, stronger, faster. This plan wasn’t born overnight. We were able to Initiate High Yield Forestry in 1967 because of continual research started a quarter century ago. And this increased growth program is coming just in time! Wood needs are rising rapidly, while land available for growing trees is shrinking every year. America can’t wait for nature. It must do better: Get more wood from every acre of commercial forestland. At Weyerhaeuser, we will. That's what High Yield Forestry is all about.
