New OUR FIRMLY'FOUNDED ALMA MATER With the opening of school this fall White Oalc will have celebrated herblst birthday and begun her tenth year as a complete elementary and high school unit. Many events have happened. that at the time of happening seemed very important. As distance divides these importances, memory changes their value and even the time of their happening. As nearly as is possible, the annual staff has tried to compile authoritative history from the county superintendents office. the P. T. A. his- torian's records, past Gauger's and Roughneclr's and from people who have been present at most of the history malring. The records in the county school superintendents office are dated from l9l3 to the present with reference to the employees of the school: however. the records of the trustees are complete on record there only since I933. Prior to that date, the people who have worlred at White Oalc live only in the memory of those who have been associated with them. This list is not complete in any way: it is only a beginning of the compilation of a record which is mentioned time and time again when White Oalc people get together. Mr. Julius Tuttle entered the first school taught here in l885 by Mr. Will Dunagin, the grand- father of Rex White. Since that time Mr. Tuttle has been connected with the school in some official capacity. He has worlred for the school and seen it grow from a one teacher, frame building to a 5500.000 plant with fifty-five employees. The beginning of this great growth was due to the develop- ment of the oil industry in East Texas. In i933 the first floor of the elementary building, the teacher- age and the home economics made the White Oak campus. Other additions were made in succeed- ing years as: I934, high school: I936, Bumpus school: I937, cafeteria and second floor of the ele- mentary: I939, library. shop and commercial department. The highest pealr of enrollment, 747, was reached during the year i937-38. ln the twelve years from l93S to the present 7,432 students have been in school here. fT V l l -Y' ' ' r' ---7 is 71 l . l J l 1 l . 1 L...a- ' .
