It was through his strenuous efforts as eighth grade advisor that this 'class was fully prepared for the respon- sibilities of high school. The Seniors of 1950 made up his last eighth grade class before he became grade school principal. Mr. Hugus was horn just three miles from Knox in the year 1904. Following his elementary education in the rural schools of Beaver Township, he attended White Memorial School and was gradu- -ated with the class of 1924. ln the spring of 1924 he entered what was formerly known as the Clarion Normal School. That fall he began his teaching career in a one room school in Beaver Town- ship. He continued teaching there two years while attending night classes and summer school. He was graduated from Clarion State Teachers College with a B. S. degree. Later he attended the graduate school of the University of Pittsburgh. In the meantime he taught four years in the elementary schools of Shippenville. NV. OSCAR HUGUS In 1930 hc came to Knox as seventh and eighth grade teacher. He served in this capacity until 1946 at which time he took up the duties of grade school principal. In addition to his duties as grade school principal, he has had charge of the sale of lunch tickets since the school lunch program was started and has acted in the capacity of ticket-taker at nearly all school functions. This May he was in charge of the Pre-School Clinic. VVhen he isnit in his office, he can usually be found in one ofthe class rooms where he still teaches seventh grade history, eighth grade geography, and ninth grade civics. For your twenty-six years of devotion to the teaching profession with only three days absence because of personal illness we, the staff, proudly dedicate the White Memo of 1950 to you, Mr. Hugus, in appreciation for all you have done for the students of this school, past and present. ADMINISTRATIO There is no single agency in America more important to the present and the luture of American community life than a local Board of Education. The policies of the Board of Education have a Wide influence upon the education and Well being of the children of any American community. The duties of the Board of Education have expanded With time. School boards today are responsible for the entire educational pattern of elementary and high school instruction. The Knox-Beaver Joint Board has assumed this responsibility. It is striving to provide for the children of our community the type of education that will in- sure the maximum mental and moral development of these young citizens, the leaders of tomorrow. Am 1 late again?', What would we do without that under- standing patience of our hus drivers. lf the morning brings icy, slippery roads, never fear. The buses will go through. Our drivers will see to that. We are proud of our huses and their drivers and have every right to he. Oh, that noise! lf you had to listen to that for one-half hour two times a day, it would drive you insane. lt takes a good driver to be able to take it, and they have what it takes. Wfe may not always show our appreciation for their kindness and consideration, but we feel they understand. VVe wish to pay trihute to the following drivers: john Seamon, Paul Wetzel, Laird Exley, Norris Hummel, Floyd llurrelhrink, and Gerald Burchiield. But let us not forget our custodians. Yes, we are proud to boast that our school and school properties are the cleanest and neatest in the xicinity. To Mr. and Mrs. YVhitling we give all the credit, and it is well-deserved. From clean- ing Hoors to cleanin g windows, they have showed their interest in our school by the earuestness of their work. To them we owe a school that shines. 1353 RCL SS 4 S NIOR Bud Knight, Betty Gallagher Cliiford Crinc In 1946 wc started out as 39 very green freshmen under the guidance of Miss Rhea. That year we selected our motto, flower, and banner which was designed by Dale McElhattan. NVQ- were represented by eleven members in the band, seven in the chorus, and three on the jayvec basketball team. Our play, the Hrst that We presented in high school, was a comedy entitled 'gVVildcat Willie Gets Brain Fevcrf' It was a lmge success. When the school bell called us together again in September 1948, the sophomores numbered 34. That year we had a new class advisor, Mr. Ferguson. During the year we increased to 16 members in the band and nine in the chorus. Once again we showed our ability as actors and actresses when we presented a hilarious hillbilly comedy, Comm, Round the Mountainf, The biggest event of the year was the selection of our class rings. Our junior year was the most exciting year of our high school career. Although we lost live members, We gained two new ones to keep our number at 29. XVe were very fortunate in this eventful year to have Miss Crisman as our class advisor. Raising money for the Prom was our chief aim.. We sold Christmas cards, bas- ketball pins, held cake walks, and sponsored a movie. The play that year, The Little Red Schoolhousef' was presented twice. We first gave it for assembly where it was received with much enthusiasmg later, we pre- sented it at a combined meeting of the junior and Senior Civic Clubs. Although the Prom was held on Friday the 13th, it turned out to be the most important social event ofthe school year. The decorations carried out the ll16l11C of the '49ers. An experiment was tried whereby the grade-school pupils viewed the product of our imagin- ations at the close of the school day. This, the last year of Otll' high school career, found us with 27 members and still under the able direction of Crissic.U The chance of initiating thc freshmen was indeed a treat. That evening at the Freshmen Recep- tion we tried to prove to them that upper classmen aren't really such ubadi' people. In preparation for grad- uation We ordered our name cards, announcements, and conuuencement folders. NVQ- were represented on the Varsity team by Dale McElhattan and NValter Fye. The managers were also members of the Senior Class- Clillord C-rine and Barry Hall. Betty Gallagher was our peppy cheerleader, who succeeded in getting loud yells from everyone. NVe were still very well represented in band and chorus and on the yearbook staff-most of the editors being seniors. We worked hardest on producing our Senior Class Play, a mystery called mfhe Scarlet Shadowf, which was directed Aby our own class advisor, Miss Crisman. For our skip day the class planned a three-dav trip to Yvashington, D. C.-an excursion which we enjoyed very umeh. Not practice again tonightlv That was a familiar outcry heard hy Mr. llullman, our director, when he stated that another county band practice would he held. However. despite the moan, We all were there to participate in making this new idea of a county hand a real success. The county hand was composed of hand memhers from New Bethlehem, Shippenville, Sligo, Clarion-Limestone, Clarion, Rum-rshurg, East Brady, Porter Township, Farmington, St. Petershurg, and Knox. Eight conierts were given at various schools throughout the county hy this hand. County! District! State! -Yes, no matter what sort of festival was heing held, there you Found Knox well represented. Eight of our most talented musi- cians attended district hand held at Beaver, Pa., this year. Also in state hand and district orchestra our representation was good and well-chosen. But not only did we excel in county, district, and state events. No, for right here in Knox this April we gave a spring concert which was one of the highlights of the season. And the winner is-s - - - KNUXV' This announcement was like music to our ears last spring when we were declared the winner for the Pennsylvania Music Forensic League Contest held at Clarion. Naturally with one win to our credit we were determined to enter again this year. And again we proved to hc the winner. XVe have set our goal at Winning everything that we undertake. YVC are proud to boast of twenty-five members-Pat Etzel, Iseli Koenig, Helen XVeaver, Mary Hugus, Mary Grant, Marian Richardson, Virginia Corbett, Betty Bitter, Betty Gallagher, VValter Gilbert, Ronald Colm, Fred Graff, Don Means, Edward Hook, Bill Exley, jerry Buzza, Dale McElhattan, Elmer Slaughenhaupt, Clifford Grine, Dick Mclilhattan, Bill McConnell, Dick Buzza, Barry Hall, Allan VVeeter, and john Crone-who represented all 61 of us at county chorus held at the various high schools in this district. Under the able direction of Mr. I. N. Huffman, we have learned to master equally well selections from Bach or Beethoven, or the more popular negro spiritnals by the late Stephen Foster. No, it Wasnit shouted from the street corners, but We, the staif, certainly felt like shouting from the housetops when this long-awaited book was finally completed. For the last four months any conversation heard between Miss Morris or Miss Crisman and a member of the statl Wasnit about English, nor was it con- cerning that last assignment in bookkeeping. ENIOR PLAY The Scarlet Shadow, an exciting mystery play, had everyone on the edge of his seat when it was presented Friday, November 18. For weeks the Seniors worked with Miss Crisman at long, tiring rehearsals. There was always a part that needed a little more workf, but as the curtain went up we silently thanked her for all she had done to make the play a success. Miss Morris is to be commended also for the make-up job. There was a bit of controversy as to just what was the funniest point of the play. Some said it was when that big red thing fellv, others, when Inspector Bulwinkle mixed up his line and said, It must have been a flashlight, have you got a fuse? However, the antics of Zenobia and Ira had us all in stitches. For the Seniors themselves, the fun came from play practice. The gym exhibition that the fellows put on one night was so good that everything stopped until they were finished. Breathes there a character with soul so dead who never played five-hundred and watched his cues insteadf as the Seniors did not!
