SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL W. W. FRAMPTON, B.S., ED.M. Thiel Collegeg University of Pittsburgh. 1932-1936-Teacher, athletic director and coach, assistant principal, Saltlsburg High School, Salts- burg, Pennsylvania. 1936-1942-Supervising principal, West Middlesex High School, West Middlesex, Pennsylvania. THE ROAD AHEAD Developments i11 this war are proving beyond a doubt that a sound educa- tional system is o11e of the primary '4essentials of a freedom-loving people. All agree that sound education makes good men and good men can conquer the enemy in battle or in any other undertaking because they are good. Education, to be sound, must begin with discipline and lead to self-discipline. Its most important purposes must be the building of character and the teaching of people to think. Authorities in many fields are of the opinion that the youth of today, not- withstanding our cultural, social and economic improvements, are no better than those of twenty-five years ago because of the upbringing of American children under modern schools of thinking-in homes Hlld in schools-which have per- mitted children as much self-expression and freedom as possible, on the theory that they develop a character with fewer mental i11hibitio11s. Also, it has been said that the one instrument-namely, education-most clearly adapted to realizing the purposes of a democracy has been the very instrument which the democracies have failed to use effectively. The same instrument, distorted from its proper purposes, has bee11 seized by the dic- tatorships and manipulated with horrible effect to produce among youth the ideals and attitudes which made their own enslavement possible and which ultimately brought about this second world war. Is not this a challenge to us-as parents, teachers, and pupils-to continue. with increased zeal, to develop for ourselves a unified and highly functional educational theory and practice, and to strive for sound progress in our lives? A. C. Berlin, Wallace Weaver, llr. 0. G. Moore, Walter L. Kooinnn, Dr. T. R. Koenig. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION 'l'hc Board of Education plays an important part in any com- munity, because, on their decisions and choices rest much of the success and influence ol' the school and town. 'l'hc Knox School Board, composed of five men, who have fulhlled and continue to fulfill capably the duties entrusted to them by the town. is no exception to this. Even though it serves behind the scenes of school life, its sympathetic presence and backing is felt. Since these men, who are prominent professional men and citizens, and are busy in both of these capacities, serve without pay. they are to be commended for their close cooperation with and their enthusiasm i11 thc Knox School.
