White We, the 1964-,65 annual staff of Warren Travis White High School, proudly and sincerely dedicate our first yearbook, THE SAGA ,65, to a man who is nationally recognized for his devoted service to the youth of Dallas County. Beginning his local career in 1931 as principal of Sunset High School, he was, after distinguished service, promoted to the position of Assistant Superintendent in charge of high schools and in 1945 was elected to his present position as Superintendent of Schools. ln recent years he received one of the highest honors which can be bestowed upon an American educator when he was elected to the presidency of the American Association of School Administrators. As a tribute to his long service in civic leadership and educational service to the children of Dallas, he was awarded a special citation by the Dallas City Council. We at Warren Travis White have only to uphold the high standards of the man for whom our great school was named. We hope, also, that Dr. White will lool- back one day and see a proud memory in this small token of thanks we at W. T. White bestow upon, him and that he will see our high school which was named in his honor become a better school as the years go by as we strive to make it so. K nf iii X. In a school already rich in tradition one has but to follow in the footsteps pre- viously set by his predecessors. However, in a new school like Warren Travis White High School the opportunity to set these tra- ditions is ours. You, in your sepa- rate endeavors, have created a lasting part of our school. The Saga ,65 is our contribution to what we hope will become a school rich in tradition and proud memo- ries for all of you. We, the annual staff, have done our best to make this the yearbook you will remem- ber first when you look back over your high school years. co-editors d9W9'f-9919 maui A Beautqful Building . . Luecke, Jr., M.D.g Mr. Field Scovell I8 Mr H. D. Pearson Excellence is the key word to knowing the man who is the principal of Warren Travis White High School. And, indeed, our principal, Mr. H. D. Pearson, is a man of excellence. ln academics and extracurricular activities Mr.. Pearson has gone far above the level of average. He is, above all, a man of deep dedication, loyalty, and wisdom along with spirit, a sense of humor, and amazing tactfulness. Mr. Pearson is a man who is deeply and sincerely interested in the youth of today-a man who realizes problems and understands. He is a man who demands excellence because nothing but that most profound quality is enough for the world of today. Mr fohn C. Marshall, fr. When considering major factors in the successful running of a school like Warren Travis White High School, one immedi- ately thinks of a man like Mr. John C. Marshall, Jr., our as- sistant principal. Mr. Marshall is a man who gives all the time he has when he is needed at the school. lt is most probable that he spends more time doing 'gschool-workl' after hours than almost any student spends doing homework. But somehow, in spite of meetings andlspecial problems, he is almost always there when he is needed by a student or a faculty member and is ready and able to help with any and all problems. Mr. Marshall is a man of wit and wisdom who is indispensable to our new school. What is a counselor? Websteris Dictionary defines the word as a person who counselsg adviser? But what is a good counselor? A good counselor is a person who is deeply interested and devoted to his work as well as being well-educated in his subject. Mrs. Jua- nita Presson is a woman who is all the things whichimake a good counselor: she is educated, interested, and devoted, and a persop who in- spires confidence. All of the students who will graduate from White will come in contact with Mrs. Presson. Her advice is to be con- sidered and valued, for it may help to shape and make more significant not only a school career but a lifetime career. COUNSELOR MRS. JUANITA PRESSON Advisory and Guidance Counselor B.A., NTSU M.A., SMU One of the most active and interested mem- bers of the personnel of W. T. White High School is Mrs. Dorothy Hupfeld. She has the demanding job of keeping attendance rec- ords and making statistical reports to the School Administration Office of the Dallas Independent School District. Mrs. Hupfeld is also the girls' disciplinary counselor and, in general, lends her previous experience to the difficult job of running a school the size of White. MRS. DOROTHY HUPFELD Pupil Personnel Counselor BS., TWU M.S., TWU Secreta OFFICE PER ONNEL The hub of any large school is its office. All the activities in our school are initially controlled from the office. Every important announcement and all official business is carried on there. But an office is made up of the people who manage it. Here at White we have the good fortune of having an experienced and capable office staff without which a school the size of W. T. White could not be managed so smoothly. MRS. ALINE SANDIDGE rv Brantley Draughan Business College MRS. EMILY VAUGHAN Assistant Advisory and Guidance Counselor MRS. MARGARET CARVER IBM SMU MRS. Lynn McClathery, Co-editor The Saga 965 The job of getting a new school going is a difficult and challeng- ing task. Every organization must begin anew with none of the old foundations to build upon. Every tradition must be initiated, for there are no footsteps in which to follow. Things like school spirit, athletic teams, clubs, reputations, and yearbooks are not just there. They must be worked hard for. Every- one who can call this school year a successful one has contributed part of himself to a worthwhile effort. ,lust as our teams have worked long hard hours to get ready for competition, so have all the mem- bers of'every club worked to contribute their part to W. Fifty-five sophomores and juniors were honored by being chosen as a member of this organization. The girls began preparing for their school's first football season late in the summer. In routines these few, busy weeks officers were chosen, routines taught, and uniforms designed and ordered. All this hard work paid off at the Big D Band and Drill Team Show where the Caballeras received a standing ovation from every school participating.
