Checking back over the passenger list we find there were forty-nine happy, excited boys and girls eager to begin their travels through the Land of Knowledge. Our conductor for the entire trip was Mrs. Edna Leacock whossleader- ship enabled us to complete the trip with a maximum of success and a min- imum of failure For the first part of the Journey our crew was: chief engineer, Clinton Schaferg his assistant, B111 Helmerg time-keeper, Betsy Bilvernell and payroll master, James Haegele. At the first whistle stop we sold chances on an electric mixer and, at the next, Christmas wrapping paper. Our many activities in the Club Car included a Hallowe'en party, a Christmas party which marked the beginning of a week's layover so we could all enjoy the Christmas holidays at home, and,- finally, a picnic held in June for the purpose of celebrating the close of the first run of our Jour- ney. Before leaving from Station 6 in September of fifty-two, a glance at the passenger list showed that eight of the original forty-nine passengers had missed the train. Each who made it looked forward to this year's port- ion of the journey. In the eng1neer's seat we again placed Clinton Schafer with a new as- sistant, Nickle Knebelsg Betsy Bilvernell stayed on as time-keeper and James Haegele again was pay-roll master. We took on a new passenger, Hermine Orlio, just before leaving the station. After only six weeks of travel we had to pause long enough for Marlene Fitzsimmons to alight. Then near the half way mark we were flagged in long enough to take on a new passenger, Audrey James. During the second year we sold puffed rice balls and pumpkin pies on board. At the whistle stops we again sold Christmas wrapping paper and chanced off a Mother's Day cake. Just before Christmas we presented a Christmas play at a two day stop over. Our Club Car activities this year included a fall picnic, a Hallowe'en party, a Christmas party and another picnic in May which marked the end of our second run. ! L1 2 QQ : : 3 E E 5 Only twenty-seven boarded the Limited in September of fifty-three to begin the third round of our expedition. The drop in registered passengers was due to the fact that some were too late to catch the train, while still others left to finish the trip on another line, and to the untimely death of a beloved classmate, James Haegele. This year we placed the eng1neer's cap on the head of Bill Helmer, Nickle Knebels was his assistant, Sandra Cox took over the time-keeper's books, and Leona Wrazien became pay-roll master. The whistle-stops this year found us selling Christmas wreaths and fruit cakes, chancing off a ham and selling Easter cakes. We also held a spaghetti supper in the dining car. At an emergency stop we left Nickle Knebels, our assistant engineer, who is finishing the trip on a Philly line. His position was filled by Rosalie Skollar. we really used the Club and Dining Cars this trip. We had a Christmas party and the Junior-Senior Prom in the former, and the Junior-Senior Ban- quet in the latter. fff as , z.-. X - 11 ff-er' ff ' On September 8, 1954, twenty-three passengers left Station 7 to start the last portion of our journey. Carol Ridall couldn't be with us now as she had moved away during the summer and boarded a train at Shippensburg. We kept Bill Helmer on as engineer but gave him a new assistant, Clinton Schafer. Betsy Silvernell again became time-keeper,and Leona Wrazien stayed on as payroll master. The whistle-stops, mail-stops, and even the flag-ins found us selling yearbooks, apple cider and doughnuts, cards and wrapping paper, news pa- pers, and chances on a Christmas dinner. A Hallowe'en party at Penn Lake Junction began our numerous activities for the year. The semi-climax of our trip was a four day stop at Washington D. C. for which we had worked, and planned for nearly four years. It was really worth it. Now our trip is nearly completed and soon we will be pulling into the last station on this trip in the Land of Knowledge and the first station on our Journey through life. , .FA .- H.- 4. xl L: JE., JL, , . In their first meeting they elected as their officers---President, Walter Hittingerg Vice-president, Robert Snowdeng Secretary, Janet Siplerg Treas- urer, Albert Gower. To start a fund for their Washington trip, they chanced off a cake, and from the profit they contributed fifty dollars towards a plaque for the high school. But it wasn't all work for this freshman class, such as their successful skating party at Toby's Park, a festive Hallowe'en party, and exchanged gifts at a Christmas party. This concluded the activities in the first chapter of the class of '56. Opening the book to the second chapter, we find that the class has greatly diminished in size. Having lost thirty-three classmates Cmost of whom went to a different schoolj the class made a greater effort towards its goal. Their capable class officers, who were---President, Walter Hittingerg Vice-president, Robert Snowdeng Secretary, Janet Siplerg Treas- urer, Keith Tyler, led them through another successful year, which began with the chancing off of a Thanksgiving dinner. This project was followed by the chancing off of an Easter egg in April, and later the selling of Mother's Day cakes. Their only social event was a Hallowe'en party which was enjoyed by everyone. Reopening the book to the third chapter we read further on to find that only sixteen members of the class of '56 remain. Although they were hindered by their small number they went on to sell magazines, Christmas cards, and chances on a Thanksgiving dimmer. A project which was a novel idea was the selling of the School Daze Booklets . Even though they worked hard on their projects they found time to have a colorful Hallowe'en party, a cheerful Christmas party, and several picnics. As May rolled around we found the Juniors anxiously planning for the Junior-Senior Banquet which was a great success. Again the juniors hard work was rewarded by a BPSC- tacular prom. Now they find themselves at the first page of the final and most ex- citing chapter of their book. May they find it as enlightening, enjoyable, and successful as we have found it to be in our journey. F Y QE 5 E F 5 2 0 . XX iw QW Q W Y ff M , ,f f W ,. . s i t M. Although the Freshman Class was kept busy with projects, nevertheless, they found time for an ice skating party at the home of Joyce Yeager and a box lunch picnic at Sans souci Park at the end of the school term. After a joyous summer vacation the Freshmen returned as Sophomores and settled down to hard work in their studies, projects, and activities. The first class meeting was called by Miss Grace Hatmaker and the class officers chosen for the year were: Forrest Hayes, Presidentg Fred Carter, Vice-presidentg Joyce Yeager, Secretaryg and Ronald Butler, Treas- urer. Their agenda for the year included a candy sale,s.soup sale, selling Christmas cards, and a dance. A number of Sophomore boys are participating on the white Haven base- ball and basketball teams while the girls are displaying their talents as members of the Glee Club and the cheerleading squad. In the early fall the class held a weiner roast at the home of Joyce Yeager. The Sophomores are proving to be very co-operative and successful dur- ing their first two high school years. 'T 'ij xi 1. This is one of the smallest enrollments that White Haven High School has had in recent Years. The first class meeting was held for the purpose of electing class officers. The results of this election were: David Searfoee, Pres- identg Shirley Carter, Vice-presidentg:Curt1s Hayes, Secretaryg Michael Prutzman, Treasurer. The freshmen readily entered into extra-curriculas activities. Many of the girls participated in the Glee Club while the boys eagerly became members of the basketball and baseball teams. One of the first activities of the class of 1958 was a party at Toby ' s Park . They are looking forward to the next three year's class activities and pleasant projects earning money for that anticipated trip to Wash- ington and their Junior-Senior Banquet. We, the class of 1955, wish you, the class of 1958, a successful and fun-filled journey through your three remaining high school years. 3 P T! Some social activities planned during the year included a skating party and a trip to the public library in Wilkes Barre. Glee Club he E 1 -1 T J r I Q X. E as I w 'e Safety Patrol The Safety Patrol was organized on September 13, 1954, under the direction of Mr. Leland C. Vandermark, supervising principal. There were twenty-four boys and girls present. The officers elected at the meeting were: Captain, Lee Feistg Lieutenant, Russell Koch, and Secretary, Karlene Klotz o Due to the co-operation and alertness of the members there have been no serious injuries to any of our pupils since 1939. In 1950 the school received a green pennant from the A.A.A. for our no accident record during the first month of school that fall. Each year in which we do not have any accidents we shall receive a gold felt seal to be placed on the pennant. If at any time we should have an accident, we would lose our pennant and the four seals which we have been awarded since 1950. At the end of each year an nkward of Meritn is presented to each mem- ber of the Safety Patrol by the Anthracite Motor Club. We, the class of 1955, hope that at the end of this year we will re- ceive the fifth gold seal. Glee Club The Glee Club, under the guidance of Miss Martha Haiges, is organized at the beginning of each year. This gives the girls a chance to express their love of music in song and to appear before audiences. This club had its beginning in 1945. Since then it has been one of the major extra-curricular activities. The total membership for this year is thirty-six. The girls practice each Monday at 4 O'clock in the school auditorium. During the first four months of school, the girls practice songs for the Christmas program. After Christmas they begin practicing for the Spring Concert. The stage is always beautifully decorated and all of the girls, in their pastel gowns, make a beautiful sight. The boys sing addit- ional songs which contribute greatly to the enjoyment of the program. We, the Seniors, when looking back at our high school days, will always remember the good times had in the Glee Club. n..- .-n ,-1.g , , .-' , 15 .-gm. , rimit-I its Kill.: ,ga A .Kg ,-, T- h., 1 A l'Iv1F.1 1 . f . w 40 4. 1 g': 1.. ,, . Members of the 1954-55 varsity basketball team were: Seniors-Captain Donald Ziminsky, Ronald Klem, Raymond Quava, Stephen Prutzman, Joseph KPH11. and Russell Millerg Juniors-Charles Best, Fred Carterg Sophomores- Ronald Butler, Gerald Gallagher, George Radjevitchg Freshmen-Fred Hudock, Curtis Hayes. The Warriors started the season with two losses, one each to M.M.I. and Foster Township. Both of these games they played without the services of their ace-centerman Fred Garter. Carter entered the line up in the third game of the season to lead the team with 17 points as they beat Fairview Township, 66-55. The Warriors then lost successive games to McAdoo, M.M.I., and Foster Township by 8, 6, and lO points respectively, before walloping Fairview Township at home 78-49. Carter slammed in 35 Points. During the Christmas vacation, White Haven lost two games to Freeland and one to McAdoo by scores of 68-41, 76-57, 69-49. White Haven thus finished the exhibition campaign winning only two out of ten games. with Jim Thorpe, Weatherly, St. Anns, and Rock Glen set to compete against White Haven for Mountain League honors. a three-team race involving Jim Thorpe, Weatherly, and White Haven, was predicted by most regional fans. The Warriors first traveled to Jim Thorpe where they lost a heart- breaker, 78-75, in double overtime. Ray Qnava and Ronnie Klem led their team mates with 28 and 25 points respectively. White Haven then walloped Rock Glen at the M.M.I. gym by an 85-59 score. Fred Carter brought in 23 points with some fine shooting. In the next game, Weatherly nipped the Warriors 54-52 in s very excit- ing game. Quava collected 24 points, while Keith Tyler, formerly with the Warriors, got 14 for Weatherly. li ii -P- 11: 1...-.Y1 , .5 .-,,,-K '1 , J. .-...Hg fn .va 2. ,ren . , a,..Q.4- . ..,,. fir- ':.. Thus White Haven finished the First Half with a one win and three losses record. Because three of four Second Half games were at home, White Haven'e hopes were high as they met Jim Thorpe to start the Second Half. Jim Thorpe beat the Havenltes by three points, this time by a 60-57 score. Rook Glen then gave the Havenites a good scare before bowing 69-67 in overtime. Quava had l points. Playing without the services of Carter and Elem, both regulars, the Warriorsshopes of triumph against Weatherly looked dim. The Wreckers scored a lop-sided 85-48 triumph. Every member of both benches saw action as both coaches substituted freely. In the game of the season White Haven avenged the previous loss to St. Anne with a 70-61 win. Carter scored 24 points, and Klem 10 as they re- entered the line up. The Havenites thus finished the Second Half with two wins and two losses, giving them three wins and five losses for the Mountain League campaign.
