T. Webster and David Grayson, sponsors. Money for the senior trip was raised by a stunt night, bake sales, sale of school jewelry, and advertising at the football games. Social events honoring the class were banquets given by the White Deer W.M.U. January 21, and by the juniors, May lg and a tea given by the Skellytown W.M.U., May 10. Colorado Springs was the vacation spot for 13 seniors, May 12-16. The baccalaureate service, at which Bob Wear, Here- ford, spoke, was followed by a tea given by Supt. and Mrs. Laycock. 'fa Oficefw The Junior Class suffered a financial blow when about S100 of their money was stolen from the vault early in the year, However, they doubled their efforts in the concession stand at the football and basketball games and made enough money to give the seniors a beautiful Moonlight and Roses banquet in the Hotel Borger, May 1, The class had a gym party in October and a hay-ride in March. EAA W. 1 H N: The Sophomore class sponsored two assem- bly programs during the year, a film that Mrs. Ledbetter had taken in Alaska, and a talent show and March of Dimes drive at which S50 was raised. The class also had a gym party and a Li1 Abner and Daisy Mae party. In the class meet- 'EE' ings much helpful discussion of student problems was carried on. Lyda Spears and Dean Foose won special honors in the one-act play contest, and several others participated in speech activities. Lyda ' was also a cheerleaderg Mary Sue Bryant was elected historian for the district Teen-Agers Library Clubg and Alvin and Melvin Kalka and George Collis were on the F.F. A. judging teams. Carolyn Anderwald was elected F.F. A. Sweetheart and a cheerleaderg Jerry Mills lettered in athleticsg Buddy Smith took honors in dramatics, playing in Antic Spring and 'Aria da Capog' John Parsons also had roles in 'Antic Spring' and 'Ghost Wantedg' and Maynard Kotara and Otis Frost were on the crops judging team that placed second in Area I competition and fourth in the regional contest. The National Honor Society began its year's activities with a dinner in the home of the president, at which time plans for the annual initiation were made. In February, the chapter sponsored Courtesy Week, electing the most courteous teachers and students, and con- cluding the week with a skit in which the members depicted the wrong way to act on various occasions and the initiates showed the right way. In a formal, candlelight ceremony, February 22, fourteen new members were initiated, bringing the total number of members since the chapter was organized in September 1938, to 188. The program was followed by a tea honoring the initiates and the parents of all the members. The Student Counci1's money raising projects this year were a religious program by Dr. Stephen Haboush, the candy sales, and the coke machine. The Council has purchased a coffee urn to be used by stu- dent organizations, trophies and awards for the intramural sports, and a magazine stand for the reception room. Its members have served as ushers for all events such as the American Education Week program, dedication service, etc. They have given receptions for the parents, taken charge of all assemblies, bought decorations for the Christmas pageant, sponsored the Christmas gift exchange and the can drive for Christmas boxes, written letters of welcome and instruc- tion to all visiting schools for athletic contests, taken care of the trophy cases, and sponsored the fingerprinting of all students and school personnel. Combining with the grade school bands, it presented a concert at Skellytown, attended a clinic at Tulia, and competed in a contest at Memphis, where it received third place in both sight reading and concert playing. DeWayne DeFever placed first with a corner solo. In March also, the high school group was entertained with a hayride. In April, the combined bands com- peted in the district contest at Canyon, placing fourth in concert playing and third in sight reading.
