Here comes a BIG senior! This may have been how we felt at first, but after winning first prize on our Home- coming float, things started to look up. Sophomore l962 was carved on the float trophy as a result of our hardworking crew, slaving away night after night, burning the midnight oil, trying to get done by Friday, October 19th , As you may remember, our untiring co -operative efforts paid off. Sticking to the main slogan, Level the Heights , and unique originality also helped us to win over the juniors and seniors . In sports, our boys were outstanding, although most of them were on the B squads . They show great promise for the coming years as they move up to varsity level, and of course, with our B squad cheerleaders out there backing the team, who could help but do anything except win, You can bet your bottom dollar that they'll be out there next year as A squad, lead- ing the crowd in the old familiar cheers . It was difficult to adjust to the new coaching system under the direction of Mr . Dietz and his assistant Mr. Tamillo. But with spirit and determination, the Bears quickly overcame the problem--resulting in an excit- ing, unforgetable season. Through the use of an unbalanced line, ground gains dominated the game. It was noti until the latter part of the season that the aerial game improved, adding to the Well-rounded offense necessary to any football team. The defense Was adequate to hold the opposi- tion to minimum gains. The greatest highlight of the season was the Victori- ous homecoming. The Bears broke the traditional los- ing streak by defeating the quick-moving Columbia Heights team, 53 to 343 the most thrilling game of the season. Denny Zacho Qsafetyj and Dan Seebart Qguardj cli- maxed the season by being selected to the all-conference team. 71 4' as jgiiaii Agfa Mid-season tension is relieved with comic hats. Yes it is, for our hockey team had an outstanding season. The team improved with every game due to the spirited team ' s morale and efficient teamwork. As the season progressed, more ex- citement and anxiety built up while the Bears added game after game to their winning column. White Bear was consis- tently ranked in the state ratings, and, to bring the season to a victorious end, captured the coveted Suburban title. Denny Zacho, Bearvving, not only was selected to the All-Metropolitan high school team, but was also placed on the first line of the All-suburban Team. His 21 conference points won him second highest scoring honors in the league. Tom Ruvelson and Dick Hargesheimer held positions on the second line, while Art Guertin, Gary Halloran, Brad Stan- ius, Dick Lill, and Tom Guertin all re- ceived honorable mention. Only through hard, serious practice, did the team manage to over- come its several disadvantages--namely a lack of material and a rash of injuries. The team had to forfeit its 95-lb. weight class during the first half of the year, having no one qualifying in this di- vision. There was also a shortage of heavyweights on the team. Regardless of these disadvantages, Arnie Anderson--l54 lb. We not only painted them, but also each other. But when we were done, we had a setting which, we thought, could win an academy award. One of the toughest production jobs was the lights. Each had to be set at just the right angle to capture the desired effect . . . As the opening night arrived, our long spent hours of work at last became very rewarding. And, we'll never for- get when Hap Nast crawled out of the window seat, or when the logs fell out of the fireplace! With the completion of this W play, we were eager to begin anew the next fall. 96 A-lr w's w1'ffHm-B-Www-mawfw, ' 'W' F I FRONT ROW: Purcell, Knowlton, Swenson, Shabelski, Waugh, Murnane, Bakula. This fal1's school play, The Curse of an Aching l-leart was the first melodrama put on at White Bear by our Drama Club. The play was also a first in that it was coached by Miss Schultz, our new Dra- matics Club director. There was audience participation, too, which was also new, with both booing and hissing the Villain, and clapping for the hero. The melodrama was even accompanied by old fashioned music played by Connie Waugh. The Curse of an Aching Heart or Trapped in a Spider's Web also drew the greatest attendance crowd of any play in the past few years at White Bear.
