Heaven gives its favorites---early death Charles Clinton Liles, Jr., was born October 5, 1941. He began school at Whitakers in the fall of 1948. A friend- ly disposition along with strong traits of character made him a friend of all. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts and Secretary of the Y outh Fellowship of the Whitakers Methodist Church, of which he was a member. In 1956, when Charles was nearing completion of the eighth grade, a lingering illness forced him to remain in bed for months--some of these were spent in various hospitals of the state. Yet, all the while, his main am- bition was to return to school. This goal was never to be achieved, for on August 25, 1956, Charles graduated into the Larger Life. Although he has passed from among us, he will be with us in our hearts and minds as we attend our graduation exercises and on through our life's work. 8 I O 3 To our friend, Mr. Daniel Lane To M r. D ani el Lane , Principal of Whitakers High School 1954-1956, the 1957 Whitonian is proudly dedicated. During his two years with us Mr. Lane endeavored to develop in whose own our aims. us real sportsmanship. He was truly a leader example guided our traits and strengthened 9 N Mrs.W.P.Thompson, A.B.
