Frfth and Szxth Grades At the beg1nn1ng of the school year 1949 1950 the f1fth grade had an enrollment of mneteen eleven g1rls and exght boys Two of the g1rls were new entrants Mary Lou Kennedy came from Gahon and Ruth Perry from Bucyrus Durmg the flrst semester Carl Colgroves and Betty Heckert wxthdrew but the nurnber of boys was agam mcreased to ezght when Carl Moury from Marxon enrolled after the hol1day vacatlon The s1xth grade began wnth a total enrollment of sxxteen eleven g1rls and f1ve boys After havmg attended Gal1on School for a year J'ud1th Pensmger aga1n became a student 1n the Whetstone School and enrolled 1n the slxth grade On October the elglrteenth we were saddened by the death of Paul Lowm1ller who had been able to attend school for a few weeks only Although unable to be m class he was contxnulng h1s school work 1n h1s home and was domg very satxsfactory work Our class now numbers eleven g1rls and four boys At the Commumty Famr held ln November,the f1fth grade exh1b1ted map books for whxch Syb1l P1erson was gxven fxrst prxze Carolyn Carr second prlze and Rlchard Elcher th1rd prxze The smxth grade was awarded pnzes for health posters Joyce Corw1n recewed f1rst prmze Judlth Pens1nger second pnze Joyce MacDonald th1rd pnze Thxs year we have adopted a plan whereby the work of the flfth and s1x th grade has been lessened somewhat The f1fth grade spends the afternoon of each day 1n the fourth grade room where they study hygxene Enghsh wr1t1ng and spelhng w1th Mlss Moore The h1story geography arlthmetxc and readmg are had 1n the fxfth and sxxth grade room each forenoon We are a small group of normal happy Amerlcan boys and g1r1s mov1ng onward with Txme Some moments are happy some are sad Somet1mes we feel exalted and sometlmes we feel down trodden But nevertheless we are always golng forward eventually to take our places 1n 11fe where others who have gone on have left off We hope that we may assurne our full share of res ponslbxhtxes and fulfxll our dutles as true Chr1st1an Amer1can c1t1zens Z5 0 o ' 1 I . 1 1 1 1 - 1 . , . . . . . . . . .
