CONNER President BS., College of William and Mary; M.Ed., University of Virginia; Ed.D., University of Maryland Dr. and Mrs. James E. Conner 16 ee ee The President Several years ago, I was asked by students what I considered to be the most important consideration in selecting a candidate for teach- ing. As I recall, I only hesitated a moment before replying: The most important factor is that there be evidence that the person is a learner.” If the person, other things being considered, had that intellectual itch; if she questioned and expressed wonderment, joy and enthusiasm for certain developments in this world, then chances were excellent that she would transmit this intellectual fever to her pupils. The overriding task of the graduate is the continual exercising of his intellectual muscles. Anything short of this can only bring about a form of intellectual atrophy which is self-perpetuating unless arrested by intellectual stimulation. Don’t get out of the habit of attacking intellectual problems, of organizing your ideas. Someone has observed wisely that we do not learn from experience but by thinking about experience. You cannot sit idly by while life is played out before you like some soap opera on television. Alfred Whitehead stated that “Life is an offensive against the repetitive mechanisms of the universe.” It might well be stated that learning is a struggle against the repetitive mechanisms of daily living. The mind might be likened to a rubber band; it is useless unless stretched. Shopenhauer observed: “Every man takes the limit of his own field of vision for the limits of the world.” In a time when responsible and informed citizenship is required of all, we can ill afford the luxury of narrow minds. It is my fervent hope that college represents only a beginning in the ever-expanding boundaries of your mind. JAMES E. CONNER 2 MARY C. The tea given by Dr. and Mrs. Conner in December was a most enjoyable event for everyone. Since we shall be teaching in our own classrooms soon, the educational seminars were of vital interest to everyone. The class participated in all these activities and supported the projects from which everyone benefitted — including the treasury! “More good teachers join in line.” Senior Class Officers: Seated: B. Such activities as the all-college cookout, “Winter Week End,” the open Senate meetings and the “Senate Sees” helped to achieve this purpose. The Senate welcomed and worked on suggestions from the student body. Senate members encouraged the students to participate in the activities of the college and to take advantage of the opportunities offered them by the faculty, administration, and community. “Rare or well done?” You can always tell a Harvard man. “Let’s Twist Again” Why so serious? 65 2 ene Class Council The Class Council consists of the presidents of the four classes. The Senior Class President, Barbara Gibson, acts as chairman of the council. Carol Jeffers from the Junior Class represents Class Council in the Senate and Carolyn Nichols, a sophomore, goes to College Council. The group meets occasionally to discuss important college matters in relation to the classes. The major purpose of the Council is to in- sure inter-class communication. Class Council: C. Jeffers, C. Nichols, B. Gibson, and P. Miller. ie (nr as Clubs Council: Back Row: B. Conner, J. Bronk, J. Thompson, E. Kellogg, S. Beebe, Chairman, R. Gilbert, L. Hand. Front Row: D. Gleason, D. Hastings, and N. Ware. 66 Kesident-Day Council Resident-Day Council, made up of the presidents and vice-presidents of dormitory and day groups, meets monthly with the Dean of Students to promote healthy community living by reviewing campus policies and regulations. The hope of the council is to establish the feeling that the regulations aid cooperative living by meeting the specific needs of the students. Maturely and thoroughly the council studies any regulations which are in need of interpretation and revision. Members of the council also review the major divisions of Wheelock community life in their efforts to define, understand, and interpret campus policies. MS g : ae Resident-Day Council: Standing: C. Cooper, A. Safirstein, W. Gale, P. Corning, C. Banister, S. Dewey. Seated: B. Robbins, L. Sheinfeld, C. Stanton, Miss Powell, Advisor, S. Wise, and J. Hughes. Clubs Council The Club Council consists of the vice-president of Senate, the presidents of all the clubs and associations, and the editors of the Key and Wheel. Its purpose is to coordinate all the extra-curricular activities on the campus. The aim of the council is to promote a feeling of unity. A combined orientation program for freshmen in the fall and combined performances by the various clubs throughout the year helped to unify extra-curricular activities at Wheelock. 67 s € sie eeser ae B THESE OTHER GREAT DATES NS VALENTINES WASHINGTON S BIRTHDAY THER ORUGHT EEKENE Another wonderful Father-Daughter Week End was en- joyed by all this year. The week end began with fathers and daughters attending classes together. A father-faculty luncheon at which Dr. Connor was the speaker and a Glee Club concert at Longwood Towers added an extra spark to the activities. Highlighting the week end was the “Buttons and Bows” dance. A dance contest for those who were brave enough to join in, and entertainment added excitement to this very enjoyable evening. The week end was brought to a close with a Sunday morning brunch in the dorms. “Oh Dad, poor Dad...” Father-Daughter Week end Committee in- cludes: left to right, M. Mortimer, M. Harri- man, S. Polhemus, C. Glass and B. Buckley. Wheelock celebrated “A New England Spring” during May Week this year. A spring breakfast welcomed everyone to the traditional festivities which included per- formances by the Glee Club, the Dramatic Club, the Dance Club, the house singing groups, and the Bonyans, folk singers who appeared at the May Assembly. Other fea- tures included the freshmen’s Shakespeare Festival and the college art display with the highlight being the crowning of our May Queen beneath the old-fashioned may pole. With this coronation and our interpretations of nature through the arts, we bade wel- come to the spring of 1963. 69 Drama Club During the first semester, the Dramatic Club presented a children’s play, “The Tinder Box”, to the student body and to several schools. Weekly work-shops were initiated during the Thursday club sessions. During these work- shops much of the crew work was completed, and people were given opportunities to learn make-up, costuming, lighting and other theatrical skills. With a membership totaling ninety-three, the Glee Club opened the 1962-1963 season by presenting a joint concert with the West Point Glee Club at the Statler Hilton Ballroom. Dur- ing the holiday season we participated in the Thanksgiving As- sembly, in Christmas Vespers, and in several holiday events within the Boston community. Our first engagements in 1963 were during Founders Day and Father-Daughter Week End. Spring found the club eagerly anticipating concerts with Bow- doin and Union Colleges. Members of the student body served as critics, helping the literary staff in its choice of material for each i ssue. At a Publications’ Banquet in the spring, the Key awarded prizes for the best literary, musical and artistic contributions. By contributing to the Key, many students who had never written creatively before have found enjoyment, satisfaction, and a new interest in literary expression. HAvE A Heart! We found great satisfaction assisting the handicapped youngsters. The goal of | our spring drive: to give a fellow student a partial scholarship toward the completion of her college education, was accomplished through the combined help of students, alumnae, faculty and friends. Committee members: A. MacVicar, E. Chaffee, J. Emerson, M. Fryer, L. Thom- as, D. Black and C. Moustakis, Chair- man, J. Dexter and A. Abate. Cultural Activities Committee Continuing toward its goals of bringing Wheelock students cultural experiences of a high quality, the committee presented assemblies such as “Intellectual Life in Russia”, “Passive Resistance”, and programs including plays and folk singing. The college has responded wonderfully to these programs, showing its appreciation by filling its recreation hall and en- thusiastically questioning our speakers. The com- mittee hopes that such interaction between the stud- ent body and cultural activities will continue next year. Members of the Cultural Activities Committee discuss an assembly: K. DuPont, E. Each year the Build- ing Fund Committee has asked the students to make their contributions to this fund by sup- porting its various sales. The committee approached the past year with special enthusiasm because the plans for a new building which is to house an auditorium, gymnasium, offices and classroom facilities en- tered blue-print and model stages last fall. We hope to be building within two years. The committee wishes to think all of the students who have purchased Wheelock nightshirts, mugs, banners and other such items, for they have helped to make these plans possible by giving us their support this year. Marchant, S. Kaufman, I. Epes, E. Marks, and E. J. Bruen. Orchestra The orchestra, under the leadership of Mr. William Waite, has formed a new musical organization by joining with Simmons College. It has played compositions dating from classical Bach to contemporary works of Lerner and Loewe. The whole orchestra, as well as the smaller groups within it, has played at various college functions throughout the year. 80 With a bit of enthusiasm you'll be ready for a game. Athletic Association Officers: C. Needham, P. Cooke, P. Miller and D. Hastings, President. Athletic Association Although facilities were limited, the Athletic Association tried to provide Wheelock girls with frequent opportunities for recreation this year. During the fall, Wheelock was invited to the Wellesley Hockey Play Day, which was given for a group of colleges in the Boston area. The group had a most active year or- ganizing many excursions, some of which were held at a near- by swimming pool, ice-skating rink, and bowling alley. Mrs. Jean Marsh served as the advisor for this organization, which greatly appreciated her guidance. 81 Wheel Putting together this yearbook has been more than taking pictures, collecting ads, writing the literary, and meeting or not meeting deadlines.
