Thus, this is the scene for the 10th reunion of the “fabulous ’78. As we stand here, we see John Bailey who now owns the controlling interest in the Plainfield Dog Track. He is passing out Watch the Puppies Run stickers to Joy Berthold who has brought her world-famous, police attack dogs — “Sic ’em, Joy!” The first shift from Lawrence and Memorial Hospital has let out, and our Alumnae Sisters of Mercy are coming through the doors. Mia Boissevain leads the crew, followed by Gael Curtin. Sandy Dean, MaryBeth Scott, Sue Richmond, Cindy Figdore and Polly DuBuque — these girls can give me an IV anytime. Here comes the famous stock car driver Nancy Joiner and her pit crew. Craig Charron is her head mechanic and Jimmy Cpauto is the auto body man. They own their own garage, but their time is usually taken up by working on Jimmy’s car. A straggler from L M just joined us. Julie Christian, the X-Ray technician, is a little upset tonight because she discovered before leaving work that her machine was set at the dangerous level all day. Fresh from the Maine Timberlands we have Mahlon Smith and Karen Cochran who are the chief forest rangers for the Great Allagash Wilderness. Their main fire fighter. Rich Blodgett was scheduled to come with them but. . . Wait a minute! He’s parachuting into the parking lot: he’s a little off course, and he’s landing in the Assekonk Swamp! Come on Rich, an aim like that can prove harmful when you jump into those forest fires. Have no fear though, the Coast Guard is steaming up the swamp as Commander Jim Bouchard and CPO Cliff Ewalt rush to the rescue in their eleven-foot Coast Guard canoe. Cliff is paddling as hard as he can — finally they’ve reached Blah, picked him up, and are rushing to the shore where Captain Huck Perkins waits with his North Stonington Fire Department Rescue Squad. The situation is finally under control, but, oh, no! more trouble. The rescue squad has stalled. But here comes Charlie Gray driving his old Chevy Pick-up. He has saved the day, and all of our brave life-savers will be on time for the reunion — way to go Charlie-Cat! The food is coming out and looks scrumptious! We are fortunate to be served by the Lapinski Associated Caterers. Okay Tammy! Our thirst for liquid refreshment is being quenched by Roxy’s, which is now owned and operated by Dennis Bromley. What a duo! What’s this? Kathleen Gruber’s Nursery School? Come on Chubbs; get these little Nerds out of here! They’re not from the Nursery at all! They're the offspring of Loretta Jones, Anna Baker, and Denise Purcell who are all happily married and contributing to the Campaign to eliminate Zero Population Growth. Make sure not to step on any of these little cherubs — God! There’s hundreds of them. It’s finally happened! Wheeler High is getting a new gym! It is designed by the architectural firm of Dave Zemske and Associates, and it is being constructed by the Bob Schmidt Construction Company. The building program is being supervised by the new director of athletics and boy’s PE instructor Jim Conte! Keep the roof up boys!! Who would have ever thought that Bill Sergiy would be dealing in drugs? Well he is and legally, too. He is now the owner of his own pharmacy. “Gimmee ddrruggs, Beel!” Electric Boat’s former financial disaster has been reversed to prosperous success under the dynamic leadership of Scott Kaschel and his great crew of Wheeler Alumni. Here comes Diane Miner and Anne Sylvia with their steel-toed shoes and hard hats. Along with them are Mike Stokes and Ron Rupp, the labor leaders of The Boat who have been pushing for a strike since 1979. and machinist Doug Syren who isn’t giving anyone any trouble anymore — Good man, Doug! Candy Killer” Noon is out on bail from her recent assault and battery case. She is with Bob Noe, her defense attorney. They are standing by Candy’s plea of self-defense, but, really. Candy, is that any reason to maim five men even if you were alone? There is some commotion at the door. Look out! Here come three chauffered limos. Out steps Mike McDermott, the New York Cosmos captain who is juggling as he enters the cafeteria. Ted Lewis of the Celtics is right behind him, but as usual has stopped to slam dunk the ball. Now Tom Leach of the Phillies is sauntering up the steps and telling everyone to keep cool even if he is great. Oh no! An accident or is it?? Here comes Dave Chastang driving his bulldozer and pushing the three limos into the front lawn. He has been clearing the area so that the white limo of Chris Macina, financial wizard, business manager, and owner of the New York Mets, will have room to park. Meanwhile, there has been an invasion of more kids. It’s Sue Shaw, and this time she does have a nursery school. She is leading them all in cheers for the Class of ’78. Give us that old class spirit. Sue! Here comes a low-flying jet. Hold it! It’s landing on Route 2 and Tracy Main, the stewardess, is opening the door so that Chira Johnston, the jet-setter, and Sharon Johnson, her traveling secretary can step out, come on girls: join the party before the Staties ticket your plane. Liz Chappell is here now in her Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader outfit. She’s helping Sue and Chubbs with the little types — Yea. Rah. Rah! 38 We’ve heard that the food supply is getting low, but have no fear, Cheryl Hunt, who is now the president of Mama Celeste’s has just rolled in with a truckload of Pizza — all right Shultzie!! What a treat we’re in for now The great comedienne Debbie Page is appearing on stage tonight at Wheeler — Cut ’em up. Deb. When Debbie’s routines are done, Donna Sasko, recreation director at the new North Stonington Community Center and Ski Area, will lead us all in a game of skateboard hockey. And take it away Donna!! There is still a lot of action going on in the lobby where John Viele has set up an “Insta-Loan” booth for his Berkshire County Savings Bank of which he is now president. And Mark Kenyon has set out a map of Gettysburg and is explaining the strategy of General Lee. Mark is now the curator of Gettysburg National Museum. Among other people who have joined the evening’s festivities are Commander Donna Lothes of the Navy and Drill Sargeant Roberta Witcher of the Army — Ten Hut! Wait, I hear a scream of pain! — It’s none other than Karen Napert, Dental Technician, chasing one of her patients right through the cafeteria. Here also is Shirley Hallet, the world-famous computer designer with her assistant and keypunch expert Lori Swain. What’s on the program, girls? Reg Fox is with them as he is now the owner of ANATEK, the largest industry in metropolitan North Stonington. While we’re speaking of the captains of industry: here’s Mark Taylor, president of the “International Homestead Feed Co. Inc.,” and Andy Clark, who owns “Clark’s Well Drilling Ltd.” As you well know, this is the firm that recently drilled the Nevada China Pipeline through the center of the Earth. General pandemonium is taking place in the hallway. Mike Chastang of “Chastang Graphic Arts” is painting a mural on the wall. Winnie Spillers is digging a hole in the floor for her archeological studies and she’s laughing because she just found an old chicken bone — come on, Winnie, that’s not funny! Meanwhile, there’s Lori Hoye banging on the piano — is it Memorex or is it Lori? Wait a minute here!! There must be a thunderstorm starting — No, it’s John Coon, enduro champ, riding his bike right through the cafeteria! Whoa, he’s digging up the floor and Shiree Gardner riding one of her champion thoroughbred horses is chasing him away from the food tables. Margaret Ball, the world-famous mountaineer, is scaling the back wall in order to get a better view. When you get to the top, Margaret, bring down that Twinkie that’s stuck to the ceiling — I’m getting hungry again. Among other distinguished Alumni, we find millionairess Cathy Stedman who is throwing money to the crowd — throw some this way, Cathy! And there’s the United Nations interpreting team of Ingrid Whewell and Ronnie Turner. I can’t understand what they’re saying though — I think they’re speaking English. Hey! Get that dog out of here! Oh, I’m sorry, it’s some poor mutt being chased by the local vet, Barbie McKinster. Watch where you’re sticking that needle. Barb! Monica Boettcher is now on the stage giving a speech on Women’s Rights, but wait until tomorrow morning, you’ll see her in Cheryl Lord’s “Fine Lady Beauty Salon.” Get a butch, Monica! Almost everyone is here now. There’s Paul Dilorio, curator of the Biology Department of the Smithsonian Institute, and I guess that’s his date — she’s some specimen. We also have Danny Wilms, parapsychologist, trying to find what spirit haunts the school hot lunch program. Mark Gencarella, the local mechanic is heading for the punch bowl with a transmission tucked under his arm. and Judy Bailey, who is now happily married, is talking with her many friends who have children in her classroom. David Schaffer is showing off his new air-conditioned tractor which he uses to drive around on his 1,000 acre farm. And, finally, there’s Sandy Shaw. She’s late, but as always, she has an excuse. As the cafeteria begins to empty and quiets down and the only light shining is coming from the solitary street lamp outside, something wraps itself around you, and you know that the Class of 1978, the greatest class ever in any high school, will be back in ten years with its members even more successful than they are now. 39 JOHN ALAN BAILEY “ What s happening?
