Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1968 volume:

ore wo In this yearbook we have a collection of our cherished activities, friends, and teachers, which have highlighted our high school years here at Wheeler. We have made many lasting friendships both with classmates who have worked and planned so hard with us and with teachers who have been so understanding and devoted in helping us to prepare for what may lie ahead. Now, as the sun rises on a challenging future, our school days will be but happy memories. To some of us in the Senior Class, this future seems very clear, to others a bit hazy; but all of us can be sure that success will be ours as long as we apply both what we have learned and have experienced throughout high school. Having had an excellent foundation laid here at Wheeler, what we build and how we build is up to us. We should be thankful for the opportunity of attending such a school. I personally would like to extend my best wishes to each of my classmates in all of their future endeavors. Sincerely, Editor-in-Chief Dedication The time you freely gave us, the patience and understanding you had for us, and your extreme thoughtfulness have been deeply appreciated by the Class of 1968. As a token of our gratitude for your devotion, we dedicate our yearbook, the 1968 LEO to you . . . MISS BERNICE ARMSTRONG Special ecoanition to . . . ... SCHICK Sports Editor It is with great pleasure that I extend to each member of the graduation class of 1968 my warmest congratulations. Although you leave with sharply etched memories of your years at Wheeler, time will gradually blur most of these memories. However, you may be sure that the impact of the four year segment of your life spent with us here will always be significant. Certain habits, personality traits and elements of your character development have now been formed and will remain part of you for the rest of your life. We trust that our contribution in this respect has been a positive one. We extend to you a cordial invitation to return to visit with us often during the ensuing years. Adolph M. Zukowski Superintendent of Schools THE CORE OF THE ISSUE Basic to all issues in life are the underlying principles in which actions and decisions are rooted. The principles represent the very core, the essence, of our being and, when followed with courage and conviction, tend to give direction to our lives. Principles that are truly significant tend to be handed from one generation to another and each applies the spirit of its times to innovate the basic. That man ‘‘should do good and avoid evil” is a principle as old as rational man. Its application over the centuries has varied with what societies and the individual consider to be “good” and ‘‘evil’’ Each generation has been given the task of determining how principles are to be innovated. Formal schooling is only one factor. The home, churches, society in general, forces from within our country, international pressures--all affect the very core of what is basic. The real essential, however, is each and every individual working from himself, diffusing that same dignity that he first owes himself to all with whom he deals. The doctrine of “doing to others what we would have others do to us” is executed at great sacrifice but therein lies the real worth and the significance of life. Congratulations to each of you. With the help and participation of the class, the evening of May 19, 1965 was one of success and fun. The chairmen responsible for this dance were: Decoration and Refreshments - Julie Orr; Entertainment and Chaperones - Linda Graham; Tickets and Publicity - Laura Anderson; and Set-up and Clean-up - Andy Venn. As sophomores we were old hands at planning activities. Our first highlight of the year was a dance, Snoopy’s Hop , held on March 25, 1966. The Mustangs played at our dance and the evening turned out to be an enjoyable one. The second big event for our sophomore class was another dance. This dance, The Sophomore Sock Hop, was held in the gym on the evening of April 23, 1966. These two big activities were very successful and helped us greatly when it came to planning our junior events. Our first activity as the junior class was a dance held on October 21, 1966. Our dance, Hobo’s Haven , was held in the auditorium from 8-11 p.m. and grades 9-12 were invited. The Class of '68 as juniors can be proud of a wonderful prom - Three Coins in a Fountain . This exciting activity was held on Saturday, May 13, 1967 at eight o'clock in the evening in the High School Gymnasium. Our class worked diligently from November, 1966 to May 1, 1967 at making our prom the success that it was. The class extends much gratitude to our advisors, Mr. Ronald Brann and Mr. Jerry Copsinis, for their constant help and advice during the many months of planning for our prom. We are also thankful for having an ambitious chairman -Dawn Carlson and assistant chairman - Arlene Wilson. Along with Dawn and Arlene, our other committee chairmen and assistant chairmen were: Decorations - Sheryl Coats and Linda Graham; Entertainment - Reba Harrison and Mickey McMaster; Tickets and Booklets - Laura Anderson and Judy Murray; Invitations - Martha Brown and Rita Harrison; Publicity - Eugenie Picard and Peggi Stewart Van Patten; Refreshments - Julie Orr and Nancy Holman; and Coronation - Linda Rowe and Kathy Gleason. Each member of the class was on at least one of the committees and everyone worked hard. On the evening of May 13 it was obvious that the Class of '68 was to sponsor one of the best proms ever to be held at Wheeler. The decorations were beautiful and the evening was one of unforgettable memories and fun. Although it does not seem possible, we have all developed Senioritis. Yes, that long awaited year has finally come and the activities of the year have definitely been numerous. First of all, the Class of ’68 would like to thank this year's class officers for jobs well done. Our officers are: President - Randy Foster; Vice-President - Jessie McCullough; Secretary - Arlene Wilson; Treasurer - Rita Harrison; and Historian - Susan Pickering. Most important of all are our advisors - Miss Bernice Armstrong and Mr. Bruce Forbes - who have helped us a great deal this year. The Annual Magazine Drive was one of the major events starting us off in our senior year. Two captains. Jeanne Picard and Ray Haddad, were chosen to lead the class which was divided into two teams. We managed to go well over our goal thanks to the participation of the whole class and especially to our three high salesmen - Dawn Carlson, Peggi Stewart Van Patten and Sam Bliven. Our first activity as Seniors was a dance held on October 20, 1967 in the auditorium. Our dance, Pyschedelic Reaction, featured the Illusions and was well-planned by the chairman - Marilyn Senior, the co-chairman - Stephanie Cushman, and the rest of the Class of '68. Another important occasion for the Seniors was their Senior Ball. This Semi-Formal, Snowflakes and Mistletoe , held in the school gymnasium on December 16, 1967, was fun-filled and exciting for all. The most important time of the evening was the coronation of the class favorites - Dawn Carlson and Howard Schick. DENNIS GUTHRIE ROY GUTHRIE BASEBALL PREDICTIONS This year's baseball team is most promising. With eight starters returning from last year, a lack of experience will not be a problem. Expected to play for the Head Coach Carroll Hersom are Randy Foster at first base, John Comeau at second, Greg Dubuque at short stop, and Jim Skaggs at third. The outfield will consist of Lenny Latham in left, Tom Veitch in center with the open position in right field. In the catcher's spot should be Doug McGowan. The real battle should be for the pitching position with quite a few candidates challenging last year's starter, Roy Guthrie. With a group of dedicated young men such as this, Wheeler should be assured of its first winning season in baseball, even though the schedule is a tough one with ten QVC league games. This year's Wheeler High Harriers, led by the running of Alan Winslow and Larry Chappell, posted a fine 9-4 season record. The most noted victory came at the hands of the defending Q. V.C. champions, Putnam, by the comfortable margin of 24-35. The second annual Wheeler Invitational was won by East Lyme with a 16 point spread over Ledyard. It was a disappointment to come in fourth also trailing Stonington. In New Britain on November 4th, the annual state meet was run under rainy skies. In class S competition, Wheeler came in 9th place with 241 points, while Cromwell came in first. In the Q.V.C. meet at Woodstock, held with snow and freezing temperatures, Ledyard was the victor with a narrow 4 point win over the Wheeler runners, who defeated Plainfield, Putnam, Tourtellotte, Woodstock, and Griswold.
