Oecficaiion .. .1 have promises to keep. And miles to go before 1 sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.' - R. Frost .. .we would like to thank you, on behalf of the entire school, in the best way we know. We, the Class of 67, wish to thank these people for the patience, understanding, and interest they have shown for us throughout our years at Wheeler... MISS H. JEAN KENNEY MRS. MARY STRONG MR. BRUCE.FORBES It is with great pleasure that I offer to the graduating class of 1967 my warm congratulations. In all of your formative years thus far, culminating with your graduating from Wheeler High School this June, you have been surrounded with loving parents and teachers who have helped to guide you through the narrow channels of life and who have prevented your foundering on the shoals. Now that we have hopefully guided you into the safe, deep waters, we must leave you to plot your own future course. We prayerfully trust that the chart you outline for the future will bring to you a rich and rewarding life. We extend to you a cordial invitation to return to visit with us during the ensuing years. Adolph M. Zukowski Superintendent 'Principal REFLECTIONS Time and memory have a way of affecting each other so that when one considers events that have happened recently they appear to have a significance, an intensity unique to the present. The same situations, viewed at a different time in the future, take on a different importance, a different intensity. Y our stay at Wheeler will be subjected to the same kind of time-memory interrelationship. Perform an experiment. After your graduation, record in your yearbook your most outstanding impressions while at Wheeler. Ten years from that date, review these impressions. Most people would accept this suggestion as commonplace, the nothing new approach.” Therein is lost a most vauable lesson. Time has a way of tempering things, of placing them in perspective. Ten years hence, your impression of Wheeler will have changed. In those reflective moments, warm recollections will return, and the true view of your stay at this school will unfold. It is hoped that you will bask in the flow of pleasant memories, properly tempered by time. Good luck. Eugene R. Over the past year, Wheeler High, with a male enrollment of only seventy -two boys, established an amazing cross-country record and reputation. The sport was revived after a lapse of six years and its calling brought forth twenty-two boys. Wheeler's new cross-country course, located in Pachaug Forest, was dedicated at a dual meet against Woodstock as the Lion Harriers pounced'' out an impressive win, 16-47. After rolling up five consecutive dual victories, the hill and dalers suffered their first setback against Ledyard High School, 18-40. One of the teams proudest moments came when it beat Stonington High in a tri-angular meet at Waterford, 23-34. Another major highlight of the season was the First Annual Wheeler High School Cross-Country Invitational, won by Saint Bernard's. This event was the first its kind in this area and even though it poured cats and dogs, it proved to be highly successful. The team was coached by Bob Cloutier. Co-captains Ken Latham and Randy Foster were supported by the following letter winners: Kirby Wilkinson, Peter Sande, Sam Bliven, Gerald Proulx, Alan Winslow, Larry Chappell, and Donald Albert. Other members of the team were Kip Taylor, David Walden, Raymond Barker, Gary Parks, Lonny Fowler, Jeff Svetz, Randy Johnson, and Doug McGowan. G J. TJ. JjasJzetSa f The 1966-67 Wheeler basketball team, coached by Bob Cloutier and led by captain Kirby Wilkinson was undoubtedly the finest quintet ever to sport the Maroon and Gray colors. The fantastic Lion combination rewrote the school records by establishing a 14-3 record and by earning their first berth in the State Basketball Tournament where they were seeded Number 5. January 13th, 1967, will go down in Wheeler athletic history as the amazing Wheelerites polished off North Branford 77-72, to earn their first trip to the State Tournament. Following the game whistle, the nets were cut down, and a wild celebration took place at Wheeler High. Wheeler’s first defeat came at the hands of Griswold, 65-58 after Bruce Leay-craft left the game with a sprained ankle. Leading by 13 points at the half, the Lions found the going rougher in the second half as Griswold rebounded with a full-court M-T-M press to take the win. However, bouncing back from defeat, the Lions claimed a come-from-be-hind win over arch-rival Ledyard, 65-54, to sweep their two game series. Wheeler was seeded 5th in the State S' Tournament and drew 13th seeded Masuk High of Monroe in the first round. What made the LIONS’ attack so successful? DEDICATION--HARD WORK—SACRIFICE Who made the LIONS’ attack so successful? A group of young men sincerely dedicated to a cause they believed in: Captain Kirby Wilkinson, Bruce Leaycraft, Ken Latham, Kip Taylor, Pete Sande, Randy Foster, Howard Schick, Tommy Veitch, Mickey McMasters, Greg Dubuque, Doug Main, and their fine coach.
