Zhc £eo Wheeler .High School North Stoning ton, Connecticut 'Dedication To act like a child is to be treated like one, but to be understood and have allowances made is to desire to know better. This person has understood and made allowance. If a group is divided, the division may be fatal unless each side is proven both partly right and wrong. This person proved it. If someone is wrong, he’d often rather have his own path clearly lighted than to be directed to another. This person enlightened us. When people need aid, they would sooner have assistance than advice. This person assisted us. And so, because you have shown us without credit the reasons and steps to becoming an adult and made us without insistence desire to achieve maturity, we. the Class of 1966, dedicate the Leo to you, Mr. Raymond Crosby. 2 Superintendent My congratulations are extended to each member of the graduating class of 1966. The passing years are sure to blur many of the sharp memories you now retain of your days at Wheeler High. It is not likely, however, that the pride and admiration you have of your classmates and alma mater will ever diminish. The bonds forged between you and your school are eternal. We are proud to have played a role in your transition to young adulthood. Our best wishes go with you and we trust you will return to visit us often. Adolph M. Zukowski Superintendent 3 Principal It is difficult to imagine what the world of tomorrow holds for any of us. As a probability, one can assume that time ahead, obscured for now by issues and efforts of the present, will pose all of us with challenges. A factor that will add uniqueness to the situation is that predictability of change will be so difficult in a world where knowledge is being applied with such rapidity. Maybe this has always been the case, but for each generation the approach to the future always involves newness. This is understandably so. The participators are different. Now you will take center stage. The legacies handed on to your generation have been both magnificent and small. They range from the glorious achievements of man’s best intellectual and spiritual efforts to his inability to use these very gifts for the betterment of society. The reality of man’s contribution to the present is in his history. Accept it as you will but bear it well in mind that the contribution of your generation will also be recorded. To this end we hope your schooling will have helped. Congratulations to you! Eugene R. DiOrio Principal MR. ROSS AIELLO Mitchell Junior College Central Connecticut State College B.S. BRUCE FORBES MISS JEAN KENNEY MRS. VERONICA MASSEY 15 NANCY ANN ANYZESKI Nan Nancy, though quiet, has proven herself an asset to the Class of '66. In her freshman year, she was an active member of the Sports Club. As a sophomore and junior, she spent many hours planning refreshments and helping to decorate for the Semi-formal and Junior Prom. Nancy was always there to help when work had to be done. Last year, she was also an usherette for the commencement exercises. As a senior, she has actively participated in our magazine drive. We hope Nancy will look back.to her school years at Wheeler with happy memories. ERIC HERBERT BERG Erich Eric, who is known for his shyness, has shown great ability in woodworking and mechanical drawing. His shop projects have been excellent examples of this. Eric has also been of great assistance to this class in intramural sports. In fact, he proved especially invaluable in helping his class' volleyball team toll up all of its victories. He was second highest salesman in the senior magazine drive. Without Eric's help, the Junior Prom and Senior Ball would have never been the successes that they were. His main interest after graduation is to attend a two-year technical school. We wish only the best of luck to Eric! 16 MARCIA ALLISON BILL Marsh Marcia, who has been going to North Stonington Schools for twelve years, has shown a great interest in girls' basketball and softball. She showed such good ability in these sports that she received the award for outstanding physical education in her sophomore year. She also has been active in her class as a class officer -president as a freshman, junior, and senior and secretary as a sophomore. In her junior year, she was also cochairwoman of the Junior Prom. This year she enthusiastically participated in the magazine drive - becoming highest sales-woman. We know that Marcia will certainly succeed in life with her ambition and personality. JAMES WESLEY BRADLEY Brad Jim has shown great leadership qualities during his high-school years. This is exemplified by the good work he has done as Student Council President this year and by his achievement of the position of first runner-up in the Groton Elk's Youth Leadership Contest. He has done a commendable job as business manager of the Leo '66 Jim was also a member of the Audio-Visual Aid Club in his junior year and a member of the junior varsity basketball team in his sophomore year. He has also shown a great deal of interest in the high-school boys' physical fitness program and in the senior magazine drive. We know that Jim, who was recently chosen as his class' favorite boy, will succeed in his future - especially while attending the Lowell Technological Institute in Massachusetts. 17 MARIE ANN BUFFUM Marie Marie, with her gay, funfilled personality, has been quite active at Wheeler. She has been a member of the girls' varsity basketball and softball teams throughout her high school years--earning a softball award as a sophomore. Her deep interest in her class has been shown in the diligent way she worked as a member of the semi-formal and junior prom committees. She was the class representative to the WHEELER1TE in her junior year. Marie has also participated in several fashion shows. All of us are sure Marie will continue to succeed in life as she has done in high school. MARILYN ALICE COATS Chub Marilyn has been a very active member of her class. She has been one of the Styletones” throughout her high school years. She showed an interest in sports by participating in girls' softball in her sophomore year. She has been a great help to her class as treasurer for three years. In her junior year Marilyn was crowned Prom Queen, and what a beautiful queen she was! She has busily taken part in the high school fashion shows and did a great deal of work this year with the magazine drive. We wish only the very best for Marilyn in her future. 18 LINDA MARY CONGDON Cong Linda's lengthy list of awards and activities speaks best for her most admirable trait--an inexhaustible will to help and participate. She won the Hewitt Award for Outstanding Sportsmanship and the C. A-. W. D. C. Award. She was class treasurer as a freshman, secretary of the Student Council as a sophomore and a chorus member for three years. This year, she attended the Eastern Connecticut Music Festival. As a cheerleader for four years—junior varsity captain freshman year and varsity captain junior year—she also received an award for achievement. She is presently secretary of the National Honor Society and literary editor of the Leo ’66”. Linda's fine character, which has already received recognition, will surely award her with a full and happy life. JUNE CAROLYN FARRAR June One won't remember June without recalling the stack of mystery novels she usually carried with her to read during her spare minutes. A loyal classmate, she has served on a committee for every dance our class has sponsored, giving freely of her time and ambition. This ambition has been indeed great for she was one of the few who had enough credits to graduate even before beginning her senior year. She was also the mystery student in the magazine drive, which means she was specially awarded for the effort she had shown. June's will to learn and to work will doubtlessly continue to bring her success. 19 EDWARD FISH Eddie Helpful and friendly best describe our classmate, Eddie. He has been attending North Stonington schools for twelve years. Eddie has put his best foot forward” in helping us decorate the gym and collect card tables for the Junior Prom and Senior Ball. His favorite hobbies are swimming and wrecking transmissions. Eddie can always be seen drawing awkward figures while attending lectures, thus he has gained the title Class Artist . We all wish Eddie the best of luck and happiness in his many endeavors! KAREN GAVITT Karen Karen moved from North Stonington to Westerly, Rhode Island, in her freshman year and then returned to North Stonington and Wheeler as a senior. While a freshman at Wheeler, Karen was a member of the Sports Club. During her sophomore and junior years at Westerly, she was a member of the softball team and belonged to the Art Club. She helped greatly with our Senior Ball by putting much of her time, ability, and ideas into the planning to assure its success. To Karen go our wishes for all the happiness she desires with the hope that she will always be as amicable a person as she is now. 20 RICHARD WAYNE GAVITT G ue Richard is not only a valuable member of our class, but also one of the most popular. Asa member of our varsity basketball team, he received the Most Valuable Player Award for two years and was selected to be a Quinebaug Valley Conference All Star Player. This year he is captain of Wheeler's basketball team. Although he is only 5'10”, Richard has made up for his lack of height by his skill. As a junior, he was also vice-president of his class. We wish Richard the best of luck in his future years! MARY ELLEN GIACHELLO Mary Ellen” Mary Ellen spent her freshman and sophomore years at Waterford High School in Waterford, Connecticut, and then joined the Class of 1966 at Wheeler. During her junior year, she served on committees for the Junior Prom and was a member of the ’’Styletones”. This year, our class would not have had such a fine senior ball if Mary Ellen had not shouldered much of the behind-the-scenes” work and responsibility as co-chairman of the dance committee. Mary Ellen will be remembered for her sweet smile and warm, sincere friendliness. 21 SANDRA GRAHAM Sam' Picture Not Available Sandra has participated in many activities during her school years. She was in the dance club and also was a member of the Junior Prom Court. She made a stunning model for the fashion shows. Sandra is mainly interested in hairdressing and plans to attend a hairdressing school after graduation. We will always remember this tall, long-haired girl with the teasingest personality. Best of luck to Sandra in all her future endeavors! JENNIFER SUSAN JOHNSON Jenny Jenny proved to be a valuable member of our class as the class secretary in the ninth grade and as chairwoman of our Junior Prom. She has done a lot of work on all of our dance committees. Her voice has taken her to the Eastern Connecticut Music Festival and also to the basketball games as a cheerleader. Her ambitious ways have made this short blonde a very helpful member of our class. He showed good leadership by being on the Student Council as a sophomore and President of the Audio-Visual Aid Club in his junior year. Sam's carefree, understanding, and intelligent ways have made him always pleasant to have as a classmate and friend. LINDA LEWIS Linda Linda is very active and interested in domestic affairs. She was a member of the Future Homemakers of America Club and has always had a hand in the school fashion shows. The class never had to ask twice for Linda's help on its dances, food sales, or other activities! Her attitude toward all school affairs has been one of interest and concern. May her interest in homemaking bring her much happiness. 23 DOUGLAS RAY LOWE Doug Doug transferred to our class in his sophomore year from Shady Spring High School in Beaver, West Virginia. His ninth grade was largely devoted to the school band. Although he was new to Wheeler, he wasted no time before he was active on the basketball and volleyball teams. In the last two years of high school, he helped in the major activities of the class, such as the Junior Prom and other class dances. We all know that his sleepy wandering moods will be greatly missed. Good luck to Doug in the future! NORMA ALTHEA NICHOLS Norm Norma, known for her intelligence and expressing her honest opinions, pays much attention to the rising music groups of the nation. Her choice is preferably the Beatles . Her qualifying status as a leader has won her the position of President of the National Honor Society and Editor of the Leo '66 . She was also secretary of her class in her junior year and chairwoman for the Sophomore Semi-formal. This year she was the recipient of the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award. Future interests for Norma lie in teaching. Dale, though entering our class as a senior, has made many friends at Wheeler where she is known and liked for her genuine friendliness. JANET EMILY PALMER Jan Janet, a gay person with a subtle, dry wit, has been a member of our class since first grade. She is known for her competence in mathematics and thus, was elected chairwoman of the finance committee for the Junior Prom She has also been a member of the girls' chorus. Jan has quite a flare for writing both prose and poetry; writing is one of her favorite hobbies. Her present dream is to attend hairdressing school after graduation. Her amazing ability to rise cheerfully to any situation will always be remembered and admired. 25 ROBERT LEONARD PICARD Boobie Bob, a real enthusiast for sports, has participated in intramural basketball and volleyball. He has also shown great interest in the Audio-Visual Aid Club. His ability to talk incessantly won many an argument in Student Council in his junior year. Bob--alias the great white hunter--has also been a member of the National Rifleman's Association--thus exemplifying his love for guns. Among other hobbies of his are surfing and slotcar racing We will all certainly miss Bob but we know he will have good luck in achieving his future goals. ii HOLLY LOUISE PLUDE Holly joined our class in the sixth grade from New Hartford, Connecticut. Her interest in her class has been widely displayed in the work she did for the success of the Semi-formal, the Junior Prom, and the Senior Ball. An avid sportsman. Holly participated in the Sports Club for two years. Her artistic ability has been used greatly on class activities. She has many hobbies; one of these is playing the electric guitar. We will all miss Holly and her crazy blue jeep, but we will never forget this girl and her constant praise of the Beatles! 26 BERNARDINE VIE ROBBINS Bernie Although Bernardine appears to be quiet, she is known by her friends to be quite rollicking. She is an exceptionally good seamstress and has proved this by participating in fashion shows and has designed garments for others. Bernardine has been extremely helpful in all class activities. During the Junior year, she was chosen to be on the Queen's Court. We know Bernardine will go far with her friendly personality. Good luck from all of us. GOLDIE ROBBINS Goldie'' Friendly and tiny best describe Goldie, who has received all of her education from North Stonington Schools. Without Goldie and her faithful car , the Junior Prom decorating committee would never have met successfully. She has attended Home Economics classes throughout her high school years and has proven to be especially talented with sewing and knitting. It was also she who created the suit our handsome little page wore during the Junior Prom. Best wishes for happiness in the future go to our classmate, Goldie! 27 PATRICIA LEE ROBINSON Pat During her years at Wheeler High, Pat has proven to be one of our most valuable players on the girls' basketball and softball teams. In her junior and senior years, she was especially active in decorating for the Junior Prom and Senior Ball. She will always be remembered for her ’’comic film strips in Home Economics class. The theme was chosen to be “Sininen Kuu” — translated as Blue Moon”. Immense and artistically colored murals of rustic countryside appropriately portrayed the theme and highlighted a large blup moon. As one can tell, we got many authentic ideas from our Finnish classmate—Riitta Manttari. Everyone was the loveliest or the handsomest in an atmosphere of romance, dancing to the music of the Frank Genese Quintet. The climax of this enchanting eve was the crowning of the queen, Marilyn Coats. For the remainder of the prom, she and her stunning court consisting of Linda Congdon, Sandra Graham, Jennifer Johnson, Bernardine Robbins, Cindy Vance, and Valerie Woodward majestically reigned. At twelve o’clock this wonderful prom concluded, but the power of its magical spell remained throughout the evening for those members in the CLASS OF '661! 45 Stardust “Class favorites ” GAIL SISSON JAMES BRADLEY r B a I I a r The main event of the evening was the crowning of the senior class favorites. These two - Gail Sisson and Jim Bradley - were the stars” of the remaining evening. The members of the Class of '66 will never forget this enchanted evening in February. On February 5. 1966, the Wheeler High gymnasium became a palace full of stars. This was because the Class of '66 had chosen the theme of its Senior Ball to be Stardust”. The decorations were created from actual dream-filled ideas. 4S 50 Senior Stars CAPTAIN WITH COACH CLOUTIER JIM WEST RICHARD GAVITT Varsity Cheerleaders J. Johnson (Co-captain), A. Wilson, J. I, Jennifer Johnson, do hereby leave my failures in Chemistry and Physics to anyone who can match them, and my bottle of Karo syrup to Mr. Cloutier, in hopes that it will work better for him than it has for me. I, Sam Joslin, do hereby leave this thought: No matter how bad school seems, there is one good point; well there must be ONE good point. I, Linda Lewis, do hereby leave to Miss Capalbo all the compositions I wrote for saying shut-up during my home ec. classes. I, Doug Lowe, do hereby leave my seat in 12 A English to Susan Browne, hoping that she will enjoy it as much as I did. I also leave my ability to get along with teachers to my sister Marilyn. I, Dale O'Brien, do hereby leave my study habits to my sister, Paula. I, Norma Nichols, do hereby leave my ability to get along with Mr. Copsinis to the last man on earth. I, Janet Palmer, do hereby finally leave Fred to Holly. I, Bob Picard, do hereby leave my ability to sneak down to my locker and get a sandwich to Kirby Wilkinson, hoping it will help him grow. I also leave my objecting views to Mr. Copsinis. I, H.E.L.P., do hereby, finally, leave....and take Freddie with me. I, Bernardine Robbins, do hereby leave my long hair and my ability to get embarrassed easily to anyone who wants them. I, Goldie Robbins, do hereby leave my ability to drive a wreck to anyone who wants it. I, Patricia Robinson, do hereby leave my ability to pass tests to anyone who can use it. I, Anne Rutty, do hereby leave my dirty riding boots to Pat Devaney and my Hereford-Holstein calves to Martha Brown. I, Gail Sisson, do hereby leave a box of kleenex to Mr. Aiello, my brownie points to Kaye, my natural red hair to Karen, and my Stay-awake pills for late transmission changers to Larry. I, Kenny Stedman, leave my ability to be first in the milk line to Jesse McCullough. I, Cynthia Vance, do hereby leave to Miss Capalbo a license to operate a landrover, and to Edward Graham, a stack of letters to make up for the ones 1 never received. I, Doraine Van Lew, do hereby leave my snowshoes and my choice of a superior dairy animal to Martha Brown. I, James West, do hereby leave my ash tray to Marilyn Coats and my G.T.O. to Linda Vance, in hopes she will take care of it on Christmas vacation. I, Valerie Woodward, do hereby leave my imaginary surfboard to Mr. Copsinis, my typing skill to Mr. Kenyon so he can do his own tests instead of pestering some poor senior, and thanks for most enjoyable memories of 11th grade English classes to Mr. Crosby. It is now 1971 and Wheeler's Class of 66 is having its first reunion. It is being held in the newly-built cafe at Wheeler High, the reason being that the contractors for this exquisite addition were two of the class' graduates — Eddie and Ken. What a marvelous job they did! I understand Sam Joslin helped considerably with the architecture. He always was good in working with blue prints in shop. I imagine this knowledge came in handy when he constructed his own dairy farm, also. The reunion is being catered tonight by the Class of '67 Catering Co. These kids were always at their best in a group. By employing them tonight, we are assured that our money will be put to good use in some sort of superior project. I noticed that Marcia and Doug were intensely arguing before dinner. It seems that Doug is an insect exterminator and Marcia objects to killing the fruit-flies present in the cafe for the precise reason that she wishes to collect them for her biology students. Oh well, as I recall, she was the one who was constantly trying to destroy these insects which were always on the stage during our high-school senior lunch period. I recognize Goldie in the latest style of dress. I imagine that she designed and made it herself. My what a wonderful fashion designer-seamstress she has made! Goldie is with her sister Bernardine. Bernie just flew in from California where she is employed by Anyzeski's Model Agency. In fact, Nancy herself is expected to arrive any moment. Her executive secretary, Gail, explained that a last minute statistical check-up is keeping Nan late. Sitting next to me is Mary Ellen. She is the mother of two beautiful children now and is keeping herself very busy with P.T.A. events. It is entertainment time and we are proud to have two of our close friends to sing for us. They are well known to all music lovers; they are Money and Hair . That's right—Bob and Holly. Boy are they GREAT! I can see that everyone is having a marvelous time. I must go over to where Pat is and see what everyone there is hysterically laughing about. It seems that Pat and her fiancee are just reminiscing with the old gang” and some of the memories are hilarious! Marie is certainly not helping matters any with that catchy giggle of hers. She told me that she is presently employed as a high school girls' basketball coach. I can hear Marilyn's giggle, too. It seems that she and Cindy are relating their children's experiences to each other. WOW ! I guess their kids take after their mothers. June is personally signing her latest book tonight, the title of which is Mystery of the Class of ’66 . Boy does that book have style! Why Dale and her husband just arrived. They said they had trouble getting a babysitter for tonight. You'd never know that she was the mother of triplets. Her children certainly keep her busy! We are proud to announce that four of our classmates have come back to W.H.S. to teach. Norma teaches almost all of the high school's history classes and is advisor to the school newspaper. Jenny teaches quite a few English courses and is director of the chorus. Rich is the basketball coach and the gym teacher. Linda Lewis now teaches Home-Ec and was chosen to be the Connecticut Home-Ec Teacher of the Year. With these on the staff, North Stonington should be proud! 68 Holly and Janet came in Holly's old but faithful and crazy blue jeep tonight. Janet is a married career woman. In fact, she operated the Beauty-A-Go-Go in town. Yes, our class has brought our town much recognition. Jim Bradley was the recent recipient of the Knowall Science Award. I understand he invented a wonder-drug which induces spontaneous degeneration. Eric Berg is now the principal of the North Stonington Vocational Technical Institute, where boys are instructed in the art of teaching technicalities. Valerie is now head-nurse at Faculty Hospital in town. As a social worker, I find that much of my work involves consultations with Val concerning different patients. Doraine has achieved much fame from her painting of the Mona Lisa of the Horse World . It is now being displayed at Anne's Spanish Riding School of Connecticut. Well we've all had a very enjoyable evening talking and learning the surfingest dance steps from Sandra who rolled in on the ninth wave. Before we go the Karen's internationally-famous hamburg stand, Jim West, who is in an Air Force Commander uniform, is going to propose a toast. May we always meet with as much success as we have in the past five years and may we all return in good health and spirit in another five. Linda Congdon 69 There goes my diet Juliet, Oh, Juliet! Er.. .hi, Ma! New Ban Brush-On With Colgate 100 You don't need a mask Take it off Take it all off Trudge, trudge, trudge... 70 Us Tareyton smokers would rather fight than anything The work of an artist? Hash again?! I just love this class. Mr. Aiello we just can't find her! Around and around she goes and where she stops nobody knows. Sweethearts! Outside! ! Where the action is! 72 SPONSORS H.
