“
I T'oreworcf Carefully gathered within these pages are our own treasured memories of classmates, teachers, activities, and all that has been a part of our active school days. Challenges of higher learning, adventure and new worlds to conquer lie immediately before the members of the Senior Class. Through guidance from our faculty and encouragement from our parents, we are better prepared to meet these challenges with courage, faith and steadfastness of purpose. Look closely at our past - then go into the future realizing as you do that gone are the yesterdays but the sun dawns on a new tomorrow.” Editor-in-Chief 2 Because we want to show the gratitude of our class to one who has always acted with friendship and unselfishness towards us . . . Because he always gave his time and supervision in helping to make our activities a success . . . Because he is a teacher who arouses in the students a new faith in their ability and who, by the sincere dedication of his talents has inspired those about him through the years . . . We are exceedingly proud to dedicate this yearbook to . . . JOHN L. KENYON III. 3 With sincerity and deep appreciation, we, the Class of 1965, wish to express special recognition to: MISS H. JEAN KENNEY, whose devoted work as guidance counselor has helped to certain us on our diverse future paths. MR. KARL CECCHINI, whose pleasant disposition and congeniality will always be a part of our high school memories. MR. BRUCE G. FORBES, our homeroom advisor, who has shown a zealous interest in our class problems and activities. 4 It may be truly stated that a single impetuous act by one of our world’s leaders could result in consequences to mankind which are totally beyond complete comprehension. Never before in human history has it been so necessary to bridle the qualities of rashness, incautiousness and impetuosity. In the same vein, the reward to our young men and women for controlled action and clear-thinking will be steady and measurable progress toward their goals. I would like to warmly congratulate the Seniors upon the occasion of their graduation and assure them of our best wishes for the future. 5 Adolph M. Zukowski The man asked, Where is the true value of learning?” The thinker replied, “Make it thy business to know thy self, which is the most difficult lesson in the world.” To learn for the sake of better knowing yourself. What a tremendous undertaking! What an invigorating challenge! Therein lies the beauty and the fulfillment of the gift of life. The acquisition of learning for self-knowledge begins and ends in the same medium -humility. I speak not of the humility of the fearful or of the shy but rather, the humility of one who, as he grows in the awareness of his place in time and eternity, sees the great dignity of his as well as the dignity of the lives of all humans. It is the development of this dignity, based in learning, which leads to respect of self. Fortified with such virtue, a man may well walk with his head high and his heart filled with joy. Here then. Graduates, is the task that you face. It is one that has no end and one that perpetuates itself memory and deed. Congratulations! 6 Eugene R. I, James Sande, do hereby leave my ability to flunk important tests to Doug Lowe, and my ability to abstain from smoking to anyone who wants to quit smoking. I, Betty Schick, do hereby leave my ability to skip school so many times and get caught so few to Nancy Jennerwein and anyone else with nerve enough to do it. 39 I, Gary Stewart, do hereby leave my comb to Andy Venn who could use it. I, Prudence Stillman, do hereby leave my ability to sell ice cream and detain the lunch line by improper change making. I, Allan Van Lew, do hereby leave my job of captain of the basketball team to Richard Gavitt in hopes that he can lead the team to more victories than Wilkie and I did. I, Tim Veitch, do hereby leave my shop Skum Bag” to Kirby Wilkinson. 1, Bill Wade, do hereby leave my unflinching courage and my ability to start Jungle Games to all the sissies in the junior class, especially Richard Gavitt. 1, Ronald Whitcomb, do hereby leave my ability to smile to Mr. Schofield, and my dark hair to Paul Croft. 1, Carolyn Wilcox, do hereby, hopefully, leave. I, Debbie Wilkinson, do hereby leave my quiet, gentle manner to Janet Wilkinson. I, Nancy Wilkinson, do hereby leave my ability to cut up in class and get away with it to any future senior who wants it. 40 ( Vass History FRESHMAN The year is 1961. As ambitious freshmen we anticipated great horizons to appear during the four years ahead. The shop and room 2W of the old Wheeler building were our homerooms. Under the supervision of Mr. Copsinis, Mr. Harmmond, and Mr. Mercer we held class meetings where careful plans were made for imminent activities. Best remembered of these is a series of Freshman Blasts . The Bermuda Hop , held in June of 1962, was our most successful and noted affair. A paper drive, although not financially rewarding, is one of the prominent recollections of this freshman year. SOPHOMORE Under the direction of Mrs. Strong and Mr. Kenyon we became even more ambitious in our sophomore year at Wheeler. During the fall we held a movie which turned out to be not only entertaining but profitable. This was just the beginning. After much preparation the class held an outstanding semi-formal, the theme being Ecstasy . A candy sale and a Sophomore Blast” were also among our activities. 1962-1963 was a profitable and memorable year for us. JUNIOR Before we knew it we became Juniors. It was unbelievable. This was a year of many decisions and larger plans. We began with a food sale which was followed by another candy sale. Both were a benefit to our treasuryv Functioning as a piece of intricate machinery the class organized our Junior Prom. Its theme was Coronation Ball . Cooperation, preparation, and lots of hard work made it a big success. SENIOR Entering die school as Seniors our class finally felt as if it were reaching the end of a winding road. The year passed quickly and as June drew closer we seemed to lack time for preparation of impending events. During the fall we participated in a magazine drive raising $1159.51 for the treasury. A pizza party, held at the firehouse, officially ended the drive. Our Senior Ball was named A Night in Fantasy , and it turned out to be a real cool affair. The Washington trip was taken in April. But of all activities, graduation exercises were the most important. We, the Class of 1965, are proud of our achievements and the fact that we were the largest group to graduate in the history of Wheeler. 41 Gfass cSuper atiues TALLEST: SHORTEST: Lynne Arzamarski Linda Joiner Bill Gavitt Mindy Lebovitz MOST DIPLOMATIC: Ellie Lew Johnson Bill Gavitt YOUNGEST: Carolyn Wilcox Bob Demulling OLDEST: Paulette Lord Allan Van Lew CLASS ANGELS: Madlyn Brown Jim Sande CLASS DEVILS: Corinne Martinez Bill Wade MOST PLEASING PERSONALITY: Connie Palmer Bill Wade 42 BEST LOOKING: D'Ann Dubuque Bill Wade TYPICAL TEENAGERS: Corinne Martinez Wilkie Platt CLASS DREAMERS: Carolyn Wilcox Gary Stewart HARDEST WORKERS: Joan Penfield Andy Misky QUIETEST: Madlyn Brown Jim Louisgnan MOST ATHLETIC: Nancy Wilkinson Allan Van Lew MOST TALENTED: Ellie Lew Johnson Bill Carlson MOST INTELLECTUAL: Judy Morgan Bob Demulling 43 CLASS ARTISTS: Nancy Wilkinson Ronnie Whitcomb BEST EXCUSE MAKERS: Betty Schick Gary Stewart BEST DRESSED: Madlyn Brown Eddie Graham MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED: Joan Penfield Eddie Graham MOST POPULAR: Gayle Arnold Wilkie Platt CLASS FLIRTS: Linda Joiner Wilkie Platt BEST DANCERS: Corinne Martinez Eddie Graham FIRST TO BE MARRIED: Connie Beauchamp Randy Doucette 44 E. It has an estimated area of 55.6 square miles and an approximate population of 2,600 (1964). Essentially, North Stonington is an agricultural-residential type of community. The primary agricultural enterprises seem to be dairy and poultry farming. Other non-agricultural industries are limited in scope and size. A significant portion of the adult working population is employed outside the community in the neighboring areas. Primary sources of employment are Electric Boat Divison of General Dynamics, the Under1 water Sound Laboratory, Cottrells, Pfizers, Yardneys, and the various state agencies. Historically, the roots of the secondary school program are to be found in the formation of the Wheeler School which was founded in 1889 by Miss Jennie Wheeler of North Stonington. The endowment to carry on the enterprise was provided by Henry Dwight Wheeler, her brother. In 1901, the structure which was to house the Wheeler School was completed. The first floor was used for school purposes and the second floor was devoted to library facilities. Wheeler School served as a high school for the town until 1944. By 1950 the first eight grades of elementary school were consolidated. From 1952 to 1956 one high school grade was added each year until, in June 1956, the first class graduated from Wheeler High School of North Stonington. Wheeler High School, as a public school, is relatively young. For those in the community who have been associated with its growth, for the many dedicated teachers and principals who have nurtured it through its infancy, and for the many fine students who have helped make it a school, there is every hope that our school can aspire for a future bright with achievement and success. 82 83 Compliments Compliments of of CORNER PHARMACY COFFEE CUP RESTAURANT EDWARD A.
