I Zhe Ceo 1964 Dedication We, the class of 1964, dedicate our yearbook to Miss Kenney, our teacher and friend. In this way we wish to thank you for the guidance and the understanding you have given us throughout our senior year. Your respect for our ideas and points of view have gratified us all. That is why it is to you. Miss H. Jean Kenney, we dedicate our yearbook. The Leo ’64. 2 Principal Graduates, Graduation is both a time for looking ahead and a time for looking back. Perhaps the view is more to the future than to the past inasmuch as the forward view means a break with the ties of youth and a step into the adult world. In years ahead you will frequently open this yearbook and reminisce. You will be doing what many people have done so many times before you - you will be looking to the past. There is merit In so doing. The past, involving much that is pleasant or unpleasant, holds a positive element of value in that it can serve as an excellent guide in giving direction to the future. The unfinished can be completed. Dreams of youth can be reactivated and, given different dimensions, become realities of sweeping significance. Let the past be past but wean from it the important messages contained therein. This is the tremendous value of all history. I extend to you my sincerest congratulations and my warmest wishes for much happiness and success. 3 Superintendent of Schools To the class of 1964: As you leave behind your beloved Wheeler High School In search of new horizons, my fondest personal wish for future happiness goes with you. You have learned to work together, to play together, and to share together. Through cooperation and understanding, you now know that goals unattainable by the efforts of one are easily achieved by the harnessed efforts of many. As the years unfold, let us resolve that our mutual efforts may erase the hatred, the bigotry, and the prejudice which now exists in our country. Let us hope that some day we may be truly able to say that in our nation we indeed have provided an equal opportunity for all. May God bless you In all of your future endeavors. Adolph M. Zukowski Superintendent of Schools “Ceo” Staff Max Wade, Literary and Art Editor; Gay Taylor, Co-Editor; Richard Holman, Assistant Artist; John Mac Neil, Editor; Ellen Lattimore, Business Manager; Sheila Moore, Photography; (Absent) Allan Lewis, Advertisement Editor, It is our pleasure to present the Leo ’64. As you turn the pages of this annual, it is our hope that you will think back and remember the good times and the good friends at Wheeler. There are parts that will make you smile and there are more serious parts; but whatever the mood, we sincerely hope that you will enjoy every page as much as we enjoyed producing them. I would like to thank all my staff for their hard work and also those Juniors: Joan Penfield, Suzanne Parant, Deborah Wilkinson, Judy Morgan and Ellie Lew Johnson who have worked with us. Class History As uncertain Freshmen we held our first activity in high school. Autumn Leaves was the name of this dance, which was complete with authentic decorations, hay bales, pumpkins and leaves. In this year, Nat Joslin was our president; Geraghty Hawkins, Vice President; Mike Dorsey, Treasurer; and Gary Joachim, Secretary. Now Sophomores, no longer the green class, we struck out afresh. The Boulder Club was formed by some of the more mischievous members of the class. However, this enterprising club was never very popular with the administration. Our first semi-formal, Sentimental Evening, was a big success. Our blue and white decorations enhanced the appearance of the gym considerably. Near the top; as Juniors we began work on the Junior Prom. Mr. Cecchini and the class worked long hours building and devising decorations which were said to be the best yet. The Japanese theme, Sayonara, was accented by a grass covered bridge bordered on each side by rock gardens and a bubbling fountain (which bubbled all over the gym floor). Our lovely queen, Frances Truitt, was attended by her court of twelve girls. It was an event we will long remember. This year, Mike Walley was our President, Gary Joachim, our Vice President, Gay Taylor, our Secretary, and Kathy Maine and Ellen Lattimore, Treasurers. We're Seniors; it was hard to believe that September day. We had attained that goal we'd worked so long for, Seniorship. The poorest class in Wheeler's history, we strived desperately to make money to finance our Washington trip. Food sales, dances and movies were held. Our Senior Sweetheart dance was attended by many couples and was the first ever to make money. Phyllis Coats was our very pretty sweetheart.
