Editor in Chief ANDREW J. LATHAM, JR. It is with great pleasure that we, the class of 1963, present to Wheeler High School the Leo '63. A great amount of time and effort has gone into this book by the members of the yearbook staff, and each one of us hopes you will enjoy looking through Leo ’63 over and over again. This yearbook is something extra special and extra meaningful to each one of us. As you look through Leo '63 you are looking at a little bit of each one of us. FORBES We, the Senior Class of 1963, dedicate our yearbook, The Leo, to you Mr. Bruce G. Forbes, our Senior, and yearbook advisor. We want to express our sincere gratitude to you for being so concerned with all our activities and problems. As leaving Wheeler will be a sad departure for us all, we will always possess fond memories of our school, our faculty, and you Mr. Forbes, teacher, advisor, and friend. Principal ADOLPH M. ZUKOWSKI TO THE CLASS OF 1963: Our blessings go forth with the Senior Class on graduation day. The members of the graduating class this year are taking another giant step forward in life. Some will continue their formal education in a past-secondary school of one type or another. Others will start preparing for their life's work either in the service or other types of programs. All, however, will be entering a world which is exciting and which presents more diversified job and career opportunities than have ever before existed. It is our wish that each of our Seniors will find a rewarding niche in life. We hope, also, that our Seniors will remember fondly their days at Wheeler High School and will return to visit with us after. Adolph M. Zukowski Superintendent of Schools RALPH W. GOODRICH TO THE CLASS OF 1963: May I extend greetings and congratulations to each member of the Class of 1963 of Wheeler High School. Graduation from high school is merely a significant mile-stone in your life, and it is my sincere hope that each of you will continue to pursue additional formal educational opportunities during the exciting years ahead. May I exhort you to continue to seek the good, and when you find it share it with a friend. With every good personal wish. Ralph W. Goodrich Superintendent of Schools Guidance Counselor One of the great blessings given to man is his wonderful potential for learning. It is a faculty that makes a man unique. The proper use and refinement of the intellect can carry a man to great heights of success and happiness. The true beauty of learning is that there are so few restrictions as to what can be mastered. There is, however, another ingredient that must accompany the ability to learn. It serves as the motivation, the activator, the starter. That element is a willingness, a hunger to learn. A true appetite for learning is a rare thing to behold in our present day world. It is this element which distinguishes the great intellect from the mediocre. As students of Wheeler High School, you have made a start in developing this faculty of learning. You will now seek to intensify your attempts to realize success in your life. Cultivate a love for learning. It is so closely linked with real happiness! Best Wishes FACULTY BERNICE L. ARMSTRONG Math Miss Armstrong, a graduate of Central Connecticut State College, is Wheeler High School's math department. A sports enthusiast also, she referees the girls' basketball games with a shoe-string tied whistle and in a green plaid suit. Is that foul on red or maroon, Miss Armstrong? She is well-liked by all her students and has a fine sense of humor-even appreciates her seniors' hunting a-pothems during class. No one can fill Miss Armstrong's shoes! CARL R. CECCHINI Industrial Arts Mr. Cecchini came to our school this year from the Far West where he studied at the University of California and received a B.A. degree in education. Almost every day one can see Mr. C. coming from his shop-room with sawdust covering his head, resolving that in the future the last class of boys will clean up their own mess. RAYMOND H. CROSBY English - Social Studies This is Mr. Crosby's first year of teaching. He is a graduate of Salem State College, Salem, Massachusetts, with a B.S. degree in English. He has been very helpful in the sports program this year, and if it weren't for his width, he would be difficult to distinguish from the boys during basketball practice. EUGENE R. DiORIO Social Studies Mr. DiOrio has been a corner stone of our teaching staff. He has been here for ten years. His education includes attending Providence College where he received an A.B. degree and Boston College where he received an M.A. in Education. He has also done post graduate study at U.R.I. Mr. DiOrio is understanding and friendly, practically a father to all. He might well be called the Dear Abby of Wheeler High Schooi. v, jL -jy  p v Q - ARENA P. ECCLESTON Home Economics Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama is the Alma Mater of Mrs. Eccleston from which she received her B.S. degree in home economics. She has taught at Wheeler High for two years. Mrs. Eccleston is noted for her example of proper etiquette and friendliness to everyone. One knows that Mrs. Eccleston is speaking when the words, Your skirt is too short, ” are heard. BRUCE G. FORBES Biology - Chemistry - Science This year Mr. Forbes is our Senior and Yearbook advisor. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa which awarded him a B.S. degree and has had one year of graduate work at the University of Rhode Island. Mr. Forbes is well-known for his smile and ability to get along with everyone. Anyone can find Mr. Forbes in his hip boots and chemistry raincoat canoeing out of the chemistry lab. c GEORGE HANCHETTE Physical Education Mr. Hanchette became our coach this year after being graduated from Southern Connecticut State College with a B.S. degree in physical education. Usually about one half hour after basketball practice starts, Mr. Hanchette ceases to run along with the boys, retreats to the bench, and occupies himself by giving the order to Hustle! rather than by trying to set the example. JOHN L. KENYON Science - Math - Physics Mr. Kenyon has been a member of the Wheeler High School faculty for nine years. He was graduated from the University of Rhode Island with B.S. and M. S. degrees. Day after day you can see him in the gym practicing his hook and set shots, in the hope that a talent scout from the Celtics will pop in and make him an offer; but in the meantime, he still lowers himself annually to give the faculty team a SYLVESTER MORRONE English - Reading - Math Another new faculty member is Mr. Morrone who received an A.B. degree from Providence College and an M.A. degree from Columbia University. Mr. Morrone is a hardened veteran on the study hall battlefield. When he takes his command beside the piano, well-armed with detention slips, he quickly causes the students to surrender and succumb to quiet studying. RUTH B. PROSSER Business Education Mrs. Prosser was graduated from Union College where she received a B.S. degree. She has been a teacher at Wheeler for seven years and has been an indispensable member of the Business Department. They said it couldn’t be done, but Mrs. Prosser did it, by teaching three classes at the same time in the same room. SANDRA M. RICE English Bridgewater State Teachers College, Bridgewater, Massachusetts prepared Miss Rice for us. This is her second year teaching English in the Junior High. Miss Rice was responsible for establishing girls' sports in our school. Often after school, the shrill blast from a whistle turns the attention of those in the gym to Coach Rice standing in the middle of the gym shooing the boys off the floor so that the girls can practice. DANIEL C. SCHOFIELD Social Studies - English He has a B.S. degree in social studies and English, which he received from the University of Chattanooga in Tennessee. It is the general concensus that Mr. Schofield must have a stout heart because to our school again this year even Class of '63 for VIRGINIA G. WESTCOTT Science Mrs. Westcott received a 6. S. degree in science from Bridgewater State Teachers College in Massachusetts. She is now serving as a part-time science teacher. JOHN V. He was graduated from Westminster College in Pennsylvania with a B.A. degree. He also attended the University of Connecticut from which he received an M.A. degree in science and education. He also received a sixth-year professional diploma. MARY S. STRONG English - French This is Mrs. Strong’s first year as a member of Wheeler High’s faculty. Johnson, C. Beauchamp J.V. Cheerleaders Senior Ball Class History As we began our Freshman year we glorified in our first great activity, for we won our first magazine drive. We received a total of $100 in this spectacular event. We had a total of twenty-three students in our class at this time, and of this total we chose six to lead our class. These people were: John Sullivan, president; Richard Fournier, vice president; Patricia Wilcox, secretary; and Darlene Howe, treasurer. Our student council members were Deborah Parant and Dennis Umphlett. In every activity, these people helped to make them successful. In sports we were also making ourselves known. At the conclusion of the school year a banquet was given to all of those who participated in any varsity sport. Various trophies and other awards were presented to some of our boys. Joe Caswell was awarded the Best Batting Award of the year, Dennis Umphlett was awarded the Most Promising Freshman Award, Rich Fournier won the Sportsmanship Award and John Sullivan won the Cross Country Trophy. Twenty-three wonderful sophomores filled the desks in our second year. Our class offices were held by George Palmer, president; Allen Coats, vice-president; Deborah Parant, secretary; and Darlene Howe,- treasurer. The Student Council members were Andy Latham and Pat Wilcox. We held many activities that year and the two most successful ones were; Autumn Leaves, a dance; and our second magazine drive victory. We also had great fun in presenting our Sophomore Hop. Our Junior year brought with it another change in the class of '63. We had finally reached the upperclassmen stage and we wondered what this year would hold in store for us. The class officers for the twenty-three juniors were Allen Coats, president; Richard Fournier, vice president; Pat Wilcox, secretary; Darlene Howe, treasurer. Andy Latham and Nina Kallen were our Student Council members and both held offices in the council. We sponsored many dances which helped us raise money for our Washington Trip. Our Junior Prom did not bring in much money but it did provide great enjoyment for those who attended. We were all very happy and proud of our queen, Nina Kallen, and her lovely court. What really made us all very happy was our third consecutive magazine drive victory which deposited more money into our growing treasury. As the year came to a close and as the class of '62 was graduating, we knew that we would be the next one's doing the processional. Seniors at last! As we looked back we never thought we would make it, but here we are. Everyone is excited, but not fully aware of the fact that this year concludes twelve years of companionship. The magazine drive was turned over to us, and we really cleaned up. Other activities included the Senior Ball, movies and other dances. We want to thank our teachers for understanding and helping us in our problems. Although we haven't always been on our best behavior they have stood by us and given us assistance. Thank you all very much! Class Will It Leonard Bill, do hereby leave my ability to get high marks in Economics to Lop Roode. The class of '63 had been planning for this ever since the summer of '73. Now, ten years later, in '83 we were all going to meet in little old North Stonington, for our 20th class reunion. As I boarded the jet, which would bring me home again, I settled down in the seat and fastened my safety belt, I wondered what changes had taken place in my home town. The next thing 1 knew, was that we were in the air and that the pilot was standing in the doorway of the cockpit. He looked familiar; then, I remembared--Joe Caswell! As I opened my mouth to say Joe , he noticed me, and came over to talk with me. I mentioned the reunion and he said that other classmates had also flown in for it. Charlie Shepard, who was an officer in the Coast Guard, had arrived the night before from Florida; and Allen Coats had arrived a week ago from Yellowstone National Park, where he was a Forest Ranger. As we landed, I noticed that the airport of North Stonington was quite large. When I went to get my luggage, I glimpsed at Diane Stillman, who seemed quite busy selling tickets and telling the other office girls what to do. She did like business, I remembered. We stopped to ask if she was going to the reunion, and she said that she certainly would be there. As we drove to town, we passed the Bill and Palmer Farms and the Peter Grufstedt Stables. Joe said that they were all doing well. We continued our drive until we reached Main Street. 1 noticed a new lawyer's office. The name on the door read, John Sullivan, Attorney at Law. Joe mentioned to me that Joyce Mitchell was John's private secretary. The school was just down the street, and since there was a Teachers' meeting, we went to see how everyone was. Debby Parant, the Home Economics teacher, met us at the door. As we walked in, we noticed that Wayne Denison, the history teacher, was trying to get the meeting started. Patricia Wilcox, the English teacher was quietly sipping her coffee and dreaming, as usual. W e spoke to all of them and then left. As we got into the car, we heard an ambulance siren. Out of curiosity, we followed the ambulance to the North Stonington Memorial Hospital. I was surprised by the magnificence of it. Joe said, that Andy Latham had designed it. When we walked in, we were met by the Administrative Supervisor of the hospital, Nina Kallen. She was directing Peter Williams and Dennis Umphlett to the electrical boxes. There must have been a short circuit somewhere. CLASS PROPHECY (com.) After speaking to them, we left, and headed for the place of the reunion. As we drove into the driveway of the Waldo Estates Hotel, we noticed that Richard Henry was walking toward us. He informed us that he was the personnel manager of the hotel. As Richard was giving us a guided tour, he mentioned that Richard Fournier had drawn up the plans for the building and that Judie McNish had done the interior decorating. We passed the beauty salon where Judy Cornell was a hair-dresser. We went in to say Hello, ” and saw that Darlene Howe, who was now married, was having her hair done. We talked a while, and then went into the restaurant for the reunion. As I settled back to enjoy myself, I thought back twenty years, to when these people were my homeroom seniors. I was surprised and happy that they had all turned out so well.
