Your assistance and sincerity have been very encouraging and deeply appreciated. Our Junior and Senior years at Wheeler High have been very successful and prosperous because of your patience, guidance and warm amiability. It is to you, MR. JOHN H. LUCEY JR., that we dedicate our yearbook, The Leo. STAFF Superintendent of Sekools DR. KARL D. GINAND Jaeulty and Seniors Work Zogetker SEATED: D. Platt, E. Wirtanen, C. Porter, P. Stedman STANDING: Dr. Jacobson, Mr. Lucey, Mr. DiOrio Principal TO THE CLASS OF 1962: As you conclude twelve years of public education and continue on with what we hope will be a lifelong search for knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, you go your separate ways for the first time. Some of you go on to higher education; others enter the world of business, and still others serve our country in the Armed Forces. Regardless of the road taken, you face the eternal questions: Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? The answers can come only if you have developed a personal philosophy or attitude toward life. We, your administrators and teachers, have tried to help you develop a meaningful, significant, and healthy philosophy of life. We have tried to help you formulate answers and to develop ideals by which to live. But now you must continue the search for Truth by yourself as you take your first steps beyond the doorstep of graduation. The teacher can light the lantern and put it in your hand, but YOU must walk into the dark. As you begin this new phase in your life, we wish you well and congratulate you on your splendid beginning. Remember in the days ahead that the future belongs to YOU. Ed.D., Harvard University Dr. Harold A. Jacobson Director of (guidance MR. EUGENE R. DIORIO Yeth? Credit was due the clean-up committee, which faithfully went to school on the following day to clean up; (they also drank the stale cider from the previous night). During the year we gained two new pupils; Patty Porter and Bill Edgerton, and we lost four; Pam Dubuque, Sue Hayes, Harvey Falck, Preston Tillinghast. SOPHOMORE The following year we became mighty sophomores. Stairway to the Stars, our main event that year, was a semi-fotmal prom. Despite a lack of planning, the results were very satisfactory. Another dance was also held that year. We gained one new pupil, Gerry Chapman, and lost three more; Curtis Moussie, Peter Grufstedt and Billy Smith. JUNIOR We became sophisticated juniors the next year. Our main event was our Junior Prom, called Wonderland by Night, in which the lovely and popular Jackie Gould became our Queen. Five other juniors attended Her Majesty's Court. Two or three other dances were held to help raise money for the Washington Trip. Another event was the trip to the Cambridge School of Radio and T-V, chaperoned by Mr. Prosser. About twenty seniors and juniors went on this trip. We had the afternoon off to go sight-seeing. A few of us were lost and were late in getting back to the train station. We finally found our way to the station just fifteen minutes before the train left. Mr. Prosser was waiting, smoking cigarettes and pulling his hair out. Needless to say, we had a very exciting and wonderful day. We gained one student that year; Charlotte Hirsch, and lost four; Elizabeth Coats, Elinor Johnson, Clifton Shippee, and Arnold Main. SENIOR As illustrious seniors, we looked to the future. We remembered that hard work and more hard work were our tools this year. We had many successful and some unsuccessful events, all of which indicates that we still need to improve ourselves. Our activities this year included food sales, movies, dances, suppers and other fund-raising activities for our Washington Trip. (We thank Dr. Jacobson and the faculty for cooperating with us in allowing us time to work on this Yearbook, the Leo '62. With deepest appreciation, we would like to thank the staff and everyone else responsible for providing us with the first stage of a lifetime of learning. SCENE: a lovely spring day in April. TIME: 1982 PLACE: North Stonington, Connecticut, my home town. STORY: I have come back after many years. From here on Main Street, I see that the town certainly has grown! There are so many new buildings and houses. There is even a hospital. What a large office building that is over there. Look at that restaurant. Hmmm --- Chapman’s Grill. Who's that going into the Grill? Why it’s Jackie Gould and Nadeane Coats. I think I'll talk to them. Between customers, Jackie, Nadeane, Gerry, and I had a long talk about the good times we had together during our school days at Wheeler. We talked about what we were doing now. Jackie and Nadeane were secretaries and were very happy in their work. I remember how Gerry used to like to cook. Now the Grill was her business, and a good one too! Across the street is Roseanne's Beauty Salon. I'll have to go in and visit for a while. I think I'll drop in at Wheeler and see what's new. Well, for heaven's sake! Raymond Mitchell is the Chemistry teacher. I hope his class doesn't have the explosions that we used to have in our class. Across the hall, where it always used to be, is the commercial room. I wonder—is that—yes, it is—my old friend, Eila Wirtanen. She certainly makes a wonderful business teacher. Over there is the elementary school. Can that be Charlotte Hirsch I see? It is. I guess Charlotte’s dream to be an elementary teacher has come true. Isn't it wonderful that she could teach at Wheeler and in her own home town. Well now, let’s see what's at the other end of town. A hospital. I know Patty Porter must be a nurse here. I'll go in and have her paged. After they found her for me, Patty told me about her hospital duties and how much she enjoyed her nursing here. We reminisced about the times we used to have at Wheeler. I guess I'll go. Wait a minute. Isn’t that Bill Edgerton and Dick Swain coming out of that auto factory down the block? Bill and Dick were on their lunch hour so I stopped and chatted with them for a few minutes. They suggested I look up some of the boys in the country. Down Jacobson Road is George Brown's farm. I must see how he's been. My, George certainly has a large farm ... We argued a while about Holstein's and Guernseys. Then I said goodbye. Lee's Garage. I might have known. Cliff has his own garage now and Bob Shippee works with him. They are natural mechanics. I’ll stop and chat while I get some gasoline. Darn - They Forget my Green Stamps - Too Late to go back. Well, look at this game reserve. I wonder who the game warden is? Roy Champagne. I should have guessed. I knew he liked wildlife; he always wanted to make a career of it. Everywhere there seem to be so many new homes. Here is one just being built. Don't I know that bulldozer operator? It's Philip Stedman. He has his own excavating business now. Let's find out how things are with him these days. He mentioned that Dale lived down the road. Well I'll be. Look at that huge dairy. It must be Platt's. While talking with Dale, I told him that I had seen all of our old classmates but Walter Taylor, Tommy Camp, and Bob Holman. He told me that Bob was an Air Force mechanic stationed in Hawaii, and that Walt and Tom had made careers of the Navy. I wish I could have been able to visit with them too, but that was impossible. Thus, a wonderful day had come to an end. I hadn’t had so much fun since Roy’s wedding. But now I have to catch my train and be on my way back to the Joslin Farm. I won’t forget this day for a long time. Will you? Class Will I, George Brown, leave my long curly hair to Mr. Lucey, who needs it more than I do. I, Thomas Campo, leave my ability to tease girls to Wayne Denison. I, Roy Champagne, leave nothing because no one ever gave me anything. I, Gerry Chapman, leave my ability of being myself to Nina Castro Kallen. I, Roseanne Chesbro, leave my 52 Chevy convertible to Richard Fournier, and my long hair to Kit Hayes. I, Nadeane Coats, leave my position of Student Council President to Andy Latham. I, Bill Edgerton, leave my truck to anyone stupid enough to take it. I, Jackie Gould, leave my love for horses to anyone who needs it. I, Charlotte Hirsch, leave my easy smiling to Carol Burdick, Mrs. Eccleston and to anyone else who finds it hard to smile. I, Bob Holman, leave my quiet ways to Allen Coats. I, Joyce Joslin, leave my quietness to Patty Wilcox. I, Clifton Lee, leave! I, Ray Mitchell, leave my job as projectionist to the next poor Senior and my Problem answers to Martha Cota. I, Dale Platt, leave my problems of my Model A Fordmobile to anyone who is willing to take them. I, Charlotte Porter, hereby leave, with David! I, Bob Shippee, leave my smoking habits to Mike Dorsey. I, Phil Stedman, leave my 32 Ford pickup engine to Mr. Huettl for his sailboat and the unforgettable times with the projector to Dennis Umphlett. I, Dick Swain, leave my ability to have shop for six years and not be able to build anything to Andy Latham. I, Walter Taylor, leave my 54 Ford to Allen Coats so he can use the parts for his junk. I, Eila Wirtanen, leave my used steno notebook to Joyce Mitchell, and my mistakes in typing to Richard Fournier. Wells Never in hi Ions history hw man been faced with greater challenge. He stands on the threshold of space, ready to surge into the unchartered galaxies. In his grasp is the final conquest of the oceans, the last frontier on Earth. The men and women of General Dynamics Electric Boat are playing an active, vital role in helping to shape the future. The nuclear powered submarines they build have opened the oceans to research, and they help preserve the freedom so necessary for man if he is to survive. Soon, new research submarines like the Aluminaut will take man to previously inaccessible areas to bring forth the vast, untapped mineral and food resources of the waters comprising seventy per cent of the Earth's surface. There is more to be done. The task must ultimately fall to today's young men and women.
