Taking part in this parade was our very own Wheeler High School Marching Band and Pom Pon girls. While the band was marching on the sun soaked streets of Valpo and playing Go to Rio , the Pom Pon girls where getting cooled off from the heat by get- ting el dunkedn in their dunking machine. Rich Pluimer, the only returning letter- man, was voted MVP by his team- mates. The most improved player was Chris Moss and keeping the team together was Brian Byers, receiving the catalyst award. The junior varsity team had an excellent season posting a 7'1 record. It was good enough to be conference champs. Winning the last 4 of 6 games, the girls found momentum and put it together at the end of the season. Michelle Huffman was named to the all-conference team. Holly Vereb was voted MVP and Lis Cloys was given the Most Improved Player award. The junior varsity team had an outstanding season becoming confer- ence champs with a 7-1 conference record and a 12-3 overall record. In spite of the record, Ken House was conference champ, making all- conference for the third straight yearg Chris Norcutt finished 7th in the con- ference, making all-conference for the second straight yearg and Bruce Hartrunft finished his career by being a four year letterman. Coach Betz reached a career high with 100 coaching wins in a varsity sport. The junior high ended their season 4-5, and placed 5th in the PCC meet. . In the girls' PCC tourney held al Washington, they beat Washington 5- 15, 15-12, 13-11. ln the semifinal game, our girls lost to Hebron, 15-5, 15-7. ln the sectionals held at Mor- gan, the girls beat Hanover 15-12 and 15-10. With a small staff of three, Mary Cooke, Scott Palmer, and Tina Holmes, they worked hard sell- ing ads and yearbook subscriptions to finance their project. They posted wins over Hanover, Hobart, Morgan, Kouts, and Washington. They were ready to play in all the games but one, and we almost won that one, stated Coach Mor- ris. The highlight of the evening was when Kim Highlan and Gordon Miller were named Queen and King of the dance. The junior Prince and Princess were Brian Byers and Lis Cloys. All seniors and juniors attend- ing the prom were eligible to be cho- sen. The post prom was also held at the Hindquarter in the bowling lanes next to the restaurant. Baccalaureate, combined with the graduation ceremony, was con- ducted by Reverend Riley Case. The commencement address was given by Dr. Donald Bivens, superintendent of Portage Schools.
