It has often been said that a school is only what you make itg you get out of it only what you put into it. Here at Wheeler, We put a lot into everything we do, and we have found our efforts to be rewarding. LEFT: But we were thirsty. BOTTOM: Now what do we do? BELOW: Clayton Minor enjoys the beat. Halloween dance is fun as well as Spook y. The G. A. A. sponsored the Halloween Dance. There were many strange as well as fascinating costumes, and prizes were awarded for the best. Music was provided by the Midnight Mass. Homecoming Queen Diane Horan reigns over her lovely court. The homecoming was a success--the team Won the basketball game over Morgan, and the dance was Well attended. The gym was deco- rated beautifully for a Winterland by Night, the theme of the dance. Candidates for the court were Fern Ankarlo, Diane Horan, Nor- ma Reynolds, and Bonnie Spagna, Seniors, Lois McCray, Janis Reynolds, Anita Spagna, and Monica Spoljaric, juniors. 10 TOP: Tom Peabody and Dee I-Iattabaugh crown Queen Diane and give her the roses. TOP: Hark how the bells, sweet carol bells . . . RIGHT: junior l-Hgh band performs well in concert. BELOW: Senior High band plays The Nutcracker Suite. In December, the Music Depart- ment presented its Winter Concert. Participating in this were the Junior and Senior high bands, and the high school chorus. Selections ranged from Holiday in Spain to The Falling Leaves. W TOP: The mightiest land of all--Wheeler, the W Land of the Bearcats. MIDDLE: We won! We , won! BOTTOM: We're from Wheeler, W couldn't be prouder, County Tourneypep block places second in the cheering competition. The pep club, faculty, and cheerleaders spent many long hours choosing a theme and Working out cheers for the county tourney. Their efforts were rewarded when the cheering block placed second in the cheering competition. The theme was Land of the Bear Cats. It was carried out with the fans wearing buttons inscribed with the theme. The Bearea ts make il Z0 the County Tourney fnals for the Hrs! time in 21 years. The Bearcats made it to the tourney finals for the first time in 21 years by beating Kouts, 78-77 in overtime. The Bearcats were down by 8 with only two minutes to go, but came back to tie it up with a last second shot by Dee I-Iattabaugh. In the over- time they won on jon Pea- body's last second free throw. 15 In the finals, the Heb- ron Hawks proved to be just too much for the Bearcats. They led at all stops and ended the game by beating the Bearcats, 89-63. But it was still a thrilling tourney for fans, players, coaches, and cheerleaders. S wingin' into the '7O's The Home Economics Department presented another fine style show. The home -ec girls modeled the cloth- ing they had made, from sport clothes to formals. Narrators were Debi Stephens and Sue Shabi, seniors. TOP: Kathy Spurr models her peasant style jumper with blouse-dress. RIGHT: Anita Spagna modeled her brown empire-waisted dress made in home-ec III. BOTTOM LEFT: Diane was lovely in her lime green formal! BOTTOM RIGHT: Diana Turley, wearing the gown she made, provided the back- ground music. 3 Spring starts off with many wonderful sounds. Many Wonderful sounds were heard at the Spring Concert pre- sented by the Music Department. The program began With the junior Band followed by the choir. The Senior Band closed with a little bit of everything from classical to contemporary music. TOP LEFT: The clarinet section of the junior Band. TOP RIGHT: Ron Hulse and Dale Huball make up the bass section of the Senior Band. MIDDLE: You say this guy, this guy's in love with you. BOTTOM: The Senior Band plays By the Time I Get to Phoenix. Paris By N ight Paris By Night, the junior-Senior Prom, Was held at the Lembke Motor Inn. Class members and their guests were served a roast beef dinner. After- wards they danced to music by the Vegetable Reconstruction. The king and queen were Dale I-Iuball and Diane Horan. A post-prom party was held at Union Center School. RIGHT CENTER: Eat hearty! boys. This may be your last meal. ABOVE: All right, Mr. Higbie, let's not eat it all. 20 The morning of graduation, the mothers prepared a delicious breakfast for the seniors. The meal served to them and their guests, the faculty, consisted of everything from eggs and Sau- sages to pancakes and sweet rolls. lt was a grand Way to be- gin a grand day. Baccalaureate is theirs! step to gradua tion. TOP: The Seniors file into their seats. ABOVE: The services finished, the class marches out. RIGHT: The Seniors wait anxiously to enter the church. The Baccalaureate Service was held at the Seven Dolars Shrine in South Ha- ven. The Fr. james Pajkos conducted the ceremony. The high school choir sang GOD OF OUR FATHERS and NOW LET EVERY TONGUE ADORE THEE. The ushers were Lois McCray, Monica Spol- jaric, Wayne Powell, and jon Peabody. A THLETICS L Q Wheeler cap tures its third county title in cross-country. The Bearcat harriers made it another fine season in cross -country. They placed second in the round robin held at V. U. , and first in the county meet held at Forest Park. The team was coached by Dave Stealy. Wayne pushes hard to get a good place in the county meet. Although the Bear - cats had one of the county's leading hit- ters in Tom Peabody, . 409, their effort to go somewhere struck out as they ended up in the cellar. They played nine games this season and Won only three. The team was coached by Al Bradford. 25 Fine effort, but still Bearcats strike out. ABOVE RIGHT: Jon Peabody grabs a rebound for the Bearcats. 26 Wheeler's roundballers had only one problem this year-- they couldn't get ahead on the scoreboard. They kept up a steady diet of losing 16 games out of 20. They also ended up last in the conference by losing to all five opposing county' schools. But there was one moment of brightness in the schedule when the team beat Kouts in the county tourney to go on and face Hebron in the finals . The track team, headed by Coach Stealy, tried to get ahead in the points column, but man- aged to Win only one dual meet this season. In the county meet the team placed last. TOP--Janis Reynolds The cheerleaders' goal--to build school spirit and get more support at games, even if the team was losing, was achieved through the help of the Pep Club and sponsor Miss Heffernan. Both squads showed good precision and poise. 31 Norma Reynolds, Diane Horan. MIDDLE--Deb Tread- Coaches are a main part of an athletic program. An important part of an athletic program is the coaches behind it. These are the men behind our losses and victories. These men push the boys to practice and to strive for excellence. At Wheeler we have two fine coaches in Dave Stealy and Al Bradford who both did a fine job. The Honor Society raised money by selling milk and ice cream at lunch. In- duction for new members was held Decem- ber 7. Dale and Harold help themselves to refreshments at the Honor Society induction. The Student Council, sponsored by Mr. Henry Steiner kept the teachers and students in touch With each other. A. was revived this year under the guidance of Mrs. Smith. In the beginning of the year, a messy but enjoyable initiation was held for the new members. Later, a formal candlelight service was held in which all the girls participated. Over the year, the girls competed in volleyball, basketball, and track. Gymna- stics vvas added to the activities. Its basic concern is to build that spirit and keep it glow- ing. Much hard work is put of Wheelers spirit into learning cheers and get- ting the fans up for the games. This year the Pep Club's efforts were rewarcl- ed when they placed second in the County Tourney cheer- ing section competition.
