i 1 57529 The Mustang--'30 yi- HISTORY OF WHEELER HIGH SCHOOL The first school building in Wheeler was moved from two miles south- west of what is now town, in 1906. It was known as Broncho school. Among the first teachers who taught here were Mrs. John T. Hilburn, Misses Fran- ces and Dorothy Reynolds. This building was used until 1907 at which time a four room concrete structure was erected, consisting of two stories. The superintendent's sal- ary was 3755.00 in 1911 and scholastics numbered 157. An increase was shown in number of pupils the next year as there were 179. Superintend- ent's salary was raised to 3100.00 and all assistants received 360. In 1916 Wheeler high school received state aid and library books were bought to the amount of 325. There were 59 high school students this year and Judge R. H. Forrester was superintendent. Enough money was raised by class plays to pay for the publication of a little year book, entitled Sayonara . The first graduating exercises ever held here were in 1917. The old four room concrete building was torn down in '18 and the blocks were sold to the Citizens' State Bank, and they form a part of that building at present. Wheeler entered the County Interscholastic Meet the first time in 1921, and the meet was held at Shamrock. Bonds were voted on in 1922 to erect a 340,000.00 building and it was designed by Amarillo architects. In 1923 construction was begun, and the present grammar school building was completed in March of 1924. CA frame structure consisting of six rooms and a hall was immediately erected costing 33,000.00.J I In 1927-28 through the co-operation of both teachers and students, Wheeler was granted 12V2 units of affiliation by the State Department of Education. The four credits granted in '29 make a total of 16V2 affiliated units for our school. On February 9, 1929, 320,000 bonds were voted on by the tax payers, and the new high school was ready for entrance by September 11. Superintendent W. K. Sampson has proved himself worthy of his po- sition in many ways. He has added to Wheeler high school greatly. Mr. Sampson has furthered the beautification of the playgrounds and expects to make the Wheeler school the best in Texas, in the near future. 4,1 page 3 10, 'QV' ?'
