The club gained several new members and was able to hold two fundraisers. In the fall, French club elected these officers for 1986-'87: President, Cathy Woodhouse: Vice-President, Kelly Harding Secretaries Marya Za- mindar and Julie Betts: and Treasurer Eric Schwarze. The officers orga- nized the club's fortune-telling booth and moussefsorbet table at Cen- tralfest. They also planned activities for the bi-monthly meetings. The club played French games, ate French food. watched French movies, and celebrated Mardi Gras. In December, French club sold foreign language t- shirts, sweatshirts, and posters. Money from the fundraiser was used to award prizes for the foreign language poster contest and to fund the annual French dinner in Chicago. The members of the French Club en- joyed an exciting year. Through a variety of activities, they were able to learn more about the language and culture of France. 31

The Heritage Club, started by Lee and Stacey Harris, was a new organization at Wheaton Central this year. The mem- bership consisted of students who wanted to become more aware of the achievements made by minority groups in America. The club explored many cultures, specifically ones in which the members expressed an interest. Some foreign exchange students spoke at the meetings and the club vis- ited several museums in Chicago. A bake sale and other fund raisers helped to raise money needed for other events. The main purpose of the club was to break down existing stereotypical barriers. Ugh! Latin Club, how gay! Unfortunately, this is the general opinion of the WCHS student body, but we lowly beings do manage to have some fun. We plan ways to raise money such as the ball toss booth at 'Centralfest' and can- dy bar sales outside of school. We then use the money for pizza parties and other similar activities. The club officers this year were Karen Charles, President, Jeff Kincaid, Vice- President, Sam Limentato, Secretary, Suzanne Sokalski, Treasurer. And as always, Venimus, Vidimus, Vovemus piz- zas! GERMAN CLUB This past summer, eight students and two teachers enjoyed the German experience by traveling to Germany. The trip was both rewarding and unique to all. Along with trips to Nuremburg, Regensburg, and Munich, each student had the opportunity to visit other parts of Germany with their host families. Some students were even fortunate enough to see Italy and Austria. After three short weeks in Neumarkt, the group headed to Berlin. For a week, the group acquainted themselves with Berlin by visiting the Europa Center, the Berlin Wall, shopping on the Kurfuerstendamm, or boating on the Tegelsee. The month long stay in Germany ended with a glimpse of life in East Berlin, before taking a night train to Frankfurt for the flight home. By traveling to Germany, these students were enabled to experience a different culture and lifestyle. The group exchange was enjoyable and memorable for all. STEP- Germany is the Student Exchange Program at Wheaton Central which is solely responsible for giving some students from Germany the opportunity to visit America and learn about our culture. Every spring, about fifteen students and two teachers from the Ostendorfer Gymnasium in Neumarkt, Germany venture across the Atlantic for a three week stay in Wheaton. ln return, a group of Wheaton Central students travel to Neumarkt each summer. Heading the German Club was President Chris Haworth, Vice-President Jim Stromberg, Secretary Robin Johnston, and Treasurer Annie Huang. Also in leadership positions are Kirsten Young, head of the Hosting Committee, and Andy Erins, the leader of the Activities Commit- tee. STEP had two fundraisers this year. They worked at the Centralfest, selling delicious German chocolate and Gummi Bears. Also, they sold chocolate advent calendars at Christ- mastime. STEP was very busy preparing for the German's stay in America. Not only did they have to pair the German students with host families, but they also sponsored several trips to Chicago, weekend trips, field trips, and parties. As a result of their excellent planning and leadership, the German students and visitors had a chance to truly experience a different way of life. 32 ROW 1: Debbie Charpie, Kathy Laws, Kris Apel, Tor Liimatainen Steve Linhardt Gretchen Laws ROW 2 McCall, Brian lsenhart, Jim Stromberg, Chris Haworth, Robin Johnston Kirsten Young Sylvia Sung Schwarze.
