This year's orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Fitchuk, has continued to improve tremen- dously with more practices and rehearsals. The group performed for many school functions includ- ing the fall Parent Open House, and the Booster Club's Pancake Breakfast and Spaghetti Dinner. The orchestra also taped a Christ- mas show for CENTEL Cable TV. In addition to these special ap- pearances, the group played in the annual Christmas and Spring concerts, two All-District string concerts, the Variety Show, and the All-District High School Music Festival. Like last year, several members of the orchestra played at various dinners and brunches for audiences like the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce. Every- one commended the orchestra's talent and professionalism. individually, the students in the orchestra have been involved in many other music-related activi- ties. Many students participated in the IHSA Solo and Ensemble contest. Others played solos at the Spring Art Show. Jeff Wiede- meier, principal violist, was cho- sen to participate in the IMEA Dis- trict Orchestra. This orchestra is a combination of the best high school musicians in the Chicago- land area. Jeff, along with violin- ists Sylvia Sung and Kirsten Young and cellist Fran Haddock, combined to form a quartet, im- pressing all of their audiences. Pianist Annie Huang performed at Cantigny with other winners from last year's Society of American Musicians Music Contest. Annie, Sylvia, and Mr. Fitchuk were also part of the pit band in this year's musical The Boyfriend. The highlight of this performing season was the orchestra's tour of Toronto. The group gave many wonderful performances, some of them combined with the Show Choir, who also went to Toronto. When they weren't performing, the group went shopping and sight-seeing. Everyone had a ter- rific time.
