ATTITUDES TOWARD GRATITUDE FROM SELECTIONS FROM EARLY RECOLLECTIONS Now that what were once to me modern days have become olden My memories get more and more golden. I think of everybody to whom I was in my youth beholden, And gratitude does my pen embolden. 1 5' I f X 5 in I I1 fr Y I am grateful to my old nurse who did me awak- en to see I-lalley's comet And told me to turn my head away when my little brother did vomit, And particular gratitude to my parents I have SWOII1 Because without their aid I could not have been born. I am grateful to all my teachers, whether they dwelt in a hut or a palace, Because their lore did light up my zenith like the aurora borealis. They may have used a stick of hickory But they taught me much culture and history, 4

Q 2 W I am grateful for the innocent days of childhood, 5' 12 -t W Whether on city pavements or out in the wildwood Alheit that though playing Halma or football Always at my back did I hear Time's football. So I promised myself that when I grew to manhood I would never forget the friends of my youth like old canned goods.
