EW COACH, TIGERS REBUILD ld Q ROW 1: Mgr. Brian Miller, Dave Vincent, Steve Strauss, Bill Kamm, Ray Knox, Gary Marwedel, Steve Neely, Coach Arnold: ROW 2: Mgr. jim Hallberg, Ray Murray, Art Clark, Mike Perkins, jack Bertram, Gary Sieck, jim Sokolowski, Coach Bob Foster. ROW 3: Wendell Sharp, Scott Bland, Steve Haegar, Steve Longacre, Doug McGregor, jim Fredricks, Lloyd Nordstrom, Coach Rex Sherman. ROW 4: Doug Booth, Ross Truemper, Bruce Stevens, john Oldham, jim Glyman, jon Fhrie, Thom Freyer, john Hayes. Under the direction of new coaches Don Arnold and Bob Foster, the Wheaton Central Tigers finished in a tie for sixth in the conference, with a 2-5 conference record, and a 3-6 record overall. Don Arnold returned after a six year leave of absence to lead his team to an honorable record. Aided by Bob Foster the Tigers made do with only three returning lettermen, a general lack of experience, and one of the smallest teams in the conference. Placing on the all-conference team were guard Mike Perkins, who was also elected honorary captain of the team, and center Art Clark. Receiving special mention were tackle Ray Murray and guard Ross Truemper. Ray was also voted by his teammates to receive the Don S. Garner award as outstanding player of the year. Tac- kle jim Sokolowski, and junior running backs john Hayes and Steve Strauss received honor- able mention. The Tigers were plagued with numerous injuries and an erratic defense. Being unpre- pared for a strong Glenbard West team caused the Tigers their first loss, but -the team bounced back to defeat Marinette, Wisconsin. 7 Wheaton .... Glenbard W. 39 Wheaton also played a two-game series in the 27 Wheaton .... Marinette 14 Water Bowl against Elgin and West Aurora, 12 Wheaton .... Elgin 30 both of which resulted in loses. In between 14 Wheaton .... DeKalb 8 those two, Wheaton overpowered high-ranked O Wheaton .... W. Aurora 22 DeKalb for its second win. Although the Ti- 7 Wheaton .... Larkin 18 gers played their best game of the season 21 Wheaton .... St. Charles O against eventual conference champions Elgin O Wheaton .... E. Aurora 27 Larkin for the homecoming game, the Royals O Wheaton .... Naperville 34 still managed to squeeze by them. The team then proceeded to vent its frustrations all over in the best win of the year against St. Charles. The season ended on a losing note, though, be- fore a parent's night crowd against East Au- rora, and away at Naperville. 26
