qualified administrator. Not only is his educationlal background impressive, but his experience is exten- sive and varied. He received his B.A. degree in mathematics and science from Luther College, Decorah, lowa, his M.A. degree in educational administration from the Un- iversity of Minnesota, and his Ph.D. degree, also in educational administration, from the University ot lowa. Beginning his teaching career in l949, Dr. Bird- sell served in the capacity of high-school instructor for two years in Monona, lowa. After another two years as instructor and high-school principal in Primg- har, Iowa, he spent two years in the U.S. Army in El Paso, Texas, where he was assigned to Nike Guid- ed Missile training unit. ln T956 Dr. Birdsell returned to the teaching profession, serving for three years as high-school principal in Waverly, lowa. From T959 to l966, Dr. Birdsell lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he was assistant high-school and high-school principal for three years and Assistant General Su- perintendent for the four years before coming to Wheaton. The residents, students, and teachers of Wheaton appreciate Dr. Birdsell's genuine concern for the maintenance of the high standards of their schools and the general weltare of the students. WCHS WELCOMES NEW ADMINISTRATORS MR. JOHN W. SCHAFFNIT Principal Mr. Schaffnit, although a long-term teacher and administrator at WCHS, is completing his first year as high-school principal. His appointment to this posi- tion was enthusiastically received by parents,students, and faculty. He received his B.A. degree from Park College, Parkville, Missouri, and his M.A. degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois. Graduate work beyond the master's degree was taken at various universities, principally the University of Chicago. Before coming to Wheaton in l94O, Mr. Schaffnit held teaching positions in Newcastle, Nebraska, Nel- son, Nebraska, Texarkana, Arkansas, and Staunton, Illinois. At WCHS he was for many years an instruc- tor in biology, chemistry, and physics. His experience as an administrator includes a number of years as Director of Student Activities, Director of Adult Even- ing School, and Division Director of Science and Mathematics. Under Mr. Schaffnit's progressive, forward-look- ing leadership, WCHS will unquestionably continue its tradition of growth and improvement.
