Our book this year features the beautiful vistas we behold as we move about our hallways, or gaze from the windows. We love our new building, and will remember it with fond memories. The Class of 1956 are pleased to dedicate this annual to a man who in the short years he has been here has gained the respect and love of all who have been privileged to know him. He has aided Mrs. Vining in conducting the Student Conference with un- ceasing patience and unfaltering wisdom. He is a quiet man who wins rather than forces, and it is in this way that he has won the affections of our class. Counsellor, advisor, mathematics teacher, and friend. ALAN R. We say thank you with all of our hearts, Mr. Horsley. The almost unduplicated string of championships, the lead- ership of the football conference, the great name in the an- nals of sport, are all secondary to our admiration for you as a teacher and friend. It is not often that a school is so long blessed with a teacher in sports who so perfectly combined the qualities of manliness, clean play, and success. Every boy who ever played on your teams has a very large spot in his heart for you . . . and so do all of us. We wish you all the success in the world in your new ven- tures, and think of you often and fondly . . . ROBERT E. HORSLEY DARREL R. BLODGETT Superintendent of Schools DONALD C. BURGER Principal, Wheaton Community High School % Thanks for the Memories One more year, one more If ' ccorni. But, it isn ' t just a yeail)ook. For us lucky Seniors, it ' s our last one, and for those anticipating freshmen, their first in four. We sincerely hope that the 1956 edition of the Wecomi meets the stand- ards of those yearbooks preceding it, and will Itring hack a few pleasant memories. Tireless efforts and late hours on the part of the Wecomi staff have been just a part in completing such a yearbook. Faculty members, spon- sors, our photographer, Mr. Kohli, the Daily Journal, especially Mr. Hauler, our advertisers, and last but not least, our faculty sponsor for the Wecomi, Mr. Griffith, have all been a spoke in the great wheel of completing such an annual. To all these we extend our sincerest thanks, for these moments to remem- ber. Ginger and Ken A Special Thanks We, of the 1956 graduating class and preceding classes, wish to extend our sincerest thanks and appreciation to Mr. Harold Griffith, our faculty sponsor for the Wecomi. His endless help and special suggestions have made the past and present Wecomi a wonderful success! We. on the Wecomi staff working beside him, have come to regard him not only as a teacher, but as a close and lasting friend. (f h- Journal Photo) FROSH-SOPH FOOTBALL Following the example set by the Varsity, the Frosh-Soph lost only three games. It must be noted that they played one less than the Varsity. Wheaton scored 97 points to their opponents 08 for an average of 12 points per game. The Tiger Cubs started their season with four straight victories against Glenbard. Moosehart, We-Go, and Elmwood Park. The first and second losses to Sycamore and St. Charles came in a row. A victory over Naperville revitalized the team, but they closed their season with a loss to DeKalb. The Frosh-Soph this year was coached by Mr. Barnes and Mr. Longacre with their customary skill and eye for future development. •Te FRESHMAiN FOOTBALL Fourth row: Coach Jack Wells, LaDoucer, Riihimaa, Wallace, Dow, Marti, Suhr, Trott, Lewis, Coach Rex Sherman. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL 1956 This year, as in previous years, the freshman team concentrated on talent develop- ment for our varsity squads. They showed a good fighting spirit and some of that fine teamwork for which Wheaton has become famous. The season for the Frosh was a short one of only six games, in which they had two wins, three losses, and one tie. This year Mr. Sherman did another fine job as coach. I ' m sure all of the boys that have ever been coached by Mr. Sherman will agree that he is one of the best in teach- ing fundamentals vital to the sport. Mr. Sherman had the assistance of Jack Wells, a student-teacher from Wheaton College. First row: Haiiley. Manager: Gauger, Lyda. Wilcox, BilUlnn, Manager. Second row: Sweet. Gaedi Player. Colin. Highlights of the year were the lovely Christmas Vesper Service, the Mid-year Concert, given in conjunction with the orchestra, and its many faceted chores in the Varsity Show. Other appearances include the Sunday Evening Club in Orchestra Hall. Chicago; Fox Valley Music Festival; the dedication of the new building; Thanksgiving, Xmas, and Easter assemblies; and local church and civic organizations.
