Many changes have taken place since we first entered Wheaton Community High School. We've seen the addition of the new cafeteria and classrooms, and had enough Contact with them to know that they will fill a great need in the years to come. Too, we realize, that even without these things, we have had the advantage of a well trained and devoted faculty and administrative staff. To them, on hehalf of the graduating class, we extend our sincerest thanks. 966 SHEILA CHUMMERS I thought the moon was made of green cheese. At their first meet, the Tiger men heat Elgin hy a lair margin. Then they journeyed to Janesville. Wfiseonsin. to compete in the Midwest meet. There, against much higger schools, the Tiger harriers plaeed fourth. Returning home, they ran against a much improved Elgin team whit-h won the vlosely contested meet. Their third dual meet was at Glenhard where- they lost to an exceptional team. The final meet was the Distrivt. where the Tigers failed to place anyone against the strong Glenlmard squad. Taking into 1-onsideration the fact that the schools the team ran against are larger than Wheaton, Mr. Barker is satisfied with the record of 1 win- 2 losses. He also hopes more hoys not out for foothall will come out for Cross Country. as it is a wonderful opportunity to keep in condition for the winter sports. wrestling and haskethall. 3' ' 47 ' ' Q, 94i 'f' e- . .. 7 ' .A -.72 Z' x'.,4lii,r WIN . f X .5 , ,?wEpf'f ,H l' 'lxlsfl 1. l 'xlff :SYN 5 3:.HQiw EQ'i -4 15:43 t . ,f l 1 I l . i s. 0 'M i.x.'S'm,- I 5.14 l -l Q sf 1 1 -A First row: Sanchez. VARSITY FOOTBALL-1954 Our first season of free-lancing proved very successful. The Z team, backed sup by a fast-charging line and a wonderful blocking backfield, managed to set some new records in Wheaton's football book. The '54 Tigers rolled over their opponents to the tune of 3.247 yards, a new all-time high for this high school. Zephyr , Zeman gained over 1300 yards himself while earning the distinction of being named to both all-state football teams. Max Hobbs and Pete Zouvas were also given special mention. The season started with the traditional game against the Hilltoppers. They proved no match for our Tigers, as we took them 33-0. Our next game was probably the hardest of all as Wheaton met Marinette, Wisconsin, three time state champions. We came out on top, 14-13. The rest of the schedule was routine. The Tigers beat North Chicago, 19-15. Then they whipped West Chicago, 28-63 Leyden, 19-7, Sycamore, 33-63 St. Charles, 35-01 took the Homecoming game with Naperville, 31-0g and ended with Dundee. 32-14. to run their undefeated string to 20. Next season's team is uncertain, but one may be certain that the coaches, Mr. Garner and Mr. Horsley, will develop another winning team. FROSH-SOPH FOOTBALL--1954 Equalling the feat of the Varsity, the Tiger Cubs also went through their season undefeated. Led by Sophomore Butch Colin and Freshman Al Tinsley. the Cubs scored 117 points to their opponents' 52. With Mr. Long- acre's well-coached line springing the Colin master-minded hackfield, the Cubs kept the opposing teams in a dither all season, averaging twenty-two points per game. The Cubs opened their season against a very stubborn Glenbard eleven which finally bowed in defeat, 13-7. Their next game was against North Chicago. This game was the roughest one of the season, as the Cubs eked out a 20-14 victory. Then, playing like pros, they beat West Chicago. 33-6: Leyden, 18-63 Sycamore, 26-73 St. Charles, 20-12g Naperville, 21-03 and finished the season by white-washing Dundee, 26-0. The Freshmen squad. hampered as they were hy injuries, ended the season playing .000 hall. Some of the more decisive victories were over Clenhard. our areh rival, and Marmion, a tough opponent in every game. Other yietories were ehalked up against Elmwood Park. Hinsdale. and also over Glenhard again. making it two in a row for our Freshmen over the Hill- toppers. A few outstanding players were Westwood, l.ehr. Bennett. Gilbert. Rath- man. Claylrorne. Kennedy, and Orth. Credit must also he given to the other hoys. hem-ause the sueeesses of the team were due to a team effort. and not to the efforts ofa few individuals. VARSITY BASKETBALL'-1954 Playing a hot and cold brand of basketball, Coach Longacreis Tigers have garnered a nine wins-seven losses record so far this season. Having only three games remaining on the schedule, the Tiger hoopsters are keeping a weather-eye peeled on the Regional meet in West Aurora. With their scoring ace. Ed Backe, at center, they have a better-than-average chance of advancing to the Sectional at Batavia. Next year will see many 11ew faces on the Varsity squad, as many regulars are graduating this spring. Graduating seniors are Fred Bennett, Bob Zeman, Ed Backe. Don Meyers, Ron Granbur, Pete Zouvas, Jum Searight, Max Hobbs. and Dave Hass. Next season, the returning Juniors, assisted by the boys coming up from the Frosh-Soph squad, give promise of developing into a winning team for Wheaton High. Mr. Carner's grapplers lost by a rather large margin. This defeat started some rigorous training which resulted in a win over Riverside-Brookfield and McHenry. Then. the Tigers tumhled to York. They found the winning trail again hy defeating Downers Grove hut then lost again, this time to Lyons. Their next two matches were on their annual trip. This year they went to Streator and Ottawa, where they made a clean sweep by licking Streator one night and then trouncing Ottawa the next. They returned to Wheaton only to lose to Hinsdale. The next meet was with Reavis, which the Tigers easily won. Their final match was against Elgin where they lost a tough meet. The remaining highlights on the schedule are the district and state tourna- ments. From present indications, some of the Tiger-men may go down-state to the finals. Many underclassmen turned out this year, so next year should see a hetter than average team wrestling under the Tiger emhlem. Highlights of the year were the inspiring Christmas Vesper Concert at the Cary Memorial Methodist Church, and the spring concert, at which the orchestra, also under the direction of Mr. Cansman, assisted. The choral musicians also contributed a great deal to the success of this year's varsity show as in the past. Besides its duties of providing music for the many school holiday assemblies, the choir found time to make several outside guest appearances at local churches and organizations, and to participate in the annual Fox Valley Music Festival at Aurora.
