We are sure that Miss McCormick wrote long and well. Her devotion to her work and her pupils was so consistent as to seem an essential part of her. We miss her beyond the power of words to describe. We miss the strength of her character, and the sureness with which she met emergencies. We miss the kindliness of her smile and the deep penetration of her mind. Wheaton High School will forever be in debt to her, as will those pupils who were fortunate enough to have her as a teacher. , , ,pf 4 Y -1 .ff f J 'Z 1 3 1 XL 4 xx 5 Jax J' X .1 3, r 5 'lag , V-a5,..n '-4, ,,,: 4, 49 ' '-5 I, I 1 -VT C.-' 3-. 4 ' 0 JN ' .,L-' 1 . if , ' . -1'- v',. CROSS COUNTRY 1953 Losing just one regular because of graduation, Mr. Barker worked the two-milers hard to get them into condition for a winning season. Destined to be outstanding was Glen Collins, who went downstate as a junior last year. Aided by some fine running teammates, Glen proceeded to break existing records and help his team to victory over Elgin, Wheaton Academy, and Glenbard. The season was climaxed when this well coached team took third in the district meet, Collins placing second. Mr. Barker is looking forward to another above average team this fall, and hopes more boys will take an active interest in cross country. First row: Phillips, Z1-man, C. Zouvas, Kroehnkc, Craig, P. VARSITY FOOTBALL - 1953 During the 1953 season, the Wheaton Tigers wrote another chapter in the success story of Wheaton football. The team deserves considerable distinction for being one ofthe few undefeated, untied teams in our football history. Aided by an experienced backfield and an eager line. Coach llorsley. with the assistance of Mr. Garner, succeeded in molding together a smooth-functioning unit. Significant victories were posted early in the season against Naperville and Glen- bard, and as the season progressed, the Tigers continued winning. The players attribute much of their success to the fine spirit of the student body. whose enthusiasm is always an important factor. The coaches are looking forward to another fine season this year with five of eleven regulars returning to actiong and, if the terrific spirit of the student body continues, this expectation will be fulfilled. Most of these achievements can be accredited to the fine work of Mr. Colin and Mr. Longacre whose leadership has helped make frosh-soph football successful. The varsity will more than likely be using the services of last yearis frosh-soph captain. John Rhodes, who, besides showing signs of being an excellent linesman, has developed the art of kicking extra points. The success story of this team, however. cannot be accredited to any one man. for each man played an important part in helping his team to victory. Up to February lst, they had won 15 of 16 games with 6 more to be played before state tournament time. Their only loss was to highly-rated Morton of Cicero. The Tigers made up for their average shooting with a lot of hustle and a strong desire to win. All but four of their 15 wins were closely contested battles. In many of these they were behind most of the game, but the combined efforts of Ron Lederman, Bob Zeman, Fred Bennet, Ed Backe, Jim Roberts, Pete Zouvas, Max Hobbs, and Dick Kroehnke tumed what looked like defeat into victory. Prospects look good for next year's team. Five returning veterans will be given able assistance by the group of sophomores who played on Coach Rex Sherman's frosh- soph team this year. FROSH - SOPH BASKETBALL Lacking an impressive victory record this year, the frosh-soph did their best with ability and spirit. Led by Jim Gauger, Bob Lyda, Dick Nelson, Howard Caede, Gene Murdock, Rollin Sublett, Roland Darst, Mr. Sherman's merriwell boys gave the Wheaton fans many thrilling moments. Many of their losses could have gone either way, and with a little more effort on the part of their key personnel, many of those close games might have been turned into victory. The players commended Mr. Sherman on the excellent coaching and understanding he gave to them during the season. The team itself has been well coached in the basic fundamentals of basketball, which should prove helpful to the varsity teams in the next two years. SCORES Wheaton .,t,. ,VV..,,. WRESTLING-1953 Although four matches still remain on the schedule at the time of this writing, the present record indicates a successful season under the able guidance of Coach Don Garner. The season record now stands at five wins and two losses. The Tiger-Grapplers have had successful ventures against McHenry, York, Oswego, Waukegan, and River- side-Brookfieldg while losing to LaGrange and Hinsdale. Some of the outstanding members of this team who are hoping to lead their team to the district championship, and to send several members to the state finals, are Jack lngold, George Craig, Allan Kramer, Everett Irwin, and heavyweight Dick Schmitt. Coach Garner is looking forward to another fine season this year, and hopes more boys will realize the advantages of this body-building sport. Back row: Hamilton, Holmsted, Kroehnke, Baumler, Kamm, Balzhiser, McMahon, Lebo. Front row: Bennet, Ulery, Winsor, Johnson, Hamilton, Nissen, Jobson, Lambert, Hiebner. LITTLE SEVEN CHAMPS OF 1953 Wheaton's ball and bat men became the first Little Seven baseball champs. Men like Balzhiser, Kamm, D. Hamilton, and the others paced the Tigers to a 6-2 con- ference record and 8-3 for the entire season. In no case did another team beat Wheaton twice, and the teams that did defeat them also lost to them. The dual pitching staff of Kamm and Jobson was lost through graduation, but most of the team is coming back. They are Balzhiser and Lebo, catchers, Bennett, Holmsten, Kroehnke, Lambert, McMahon, and Ulery, infieldersg Baumler, F. Hamilton, and John- son, outfielders, and we hope that Nissen, who is also an infielder. and McMahon can develop into a capable pair of mound men. BATTING RECORDS Player AB H Av. 2b 3b HR. After all the hurly-burlyis done, it is fun to sit down and look back at the many hectic moments there are in producing an annual. These are the folks who have braved the journalistic gales to bri' 5 you this yearbook. It isn't perfect, but then neither are we. Pictures were our biggest chore this year. There just seemed to be a dearth of photographic genius in our midst. Mr. Kohli, The Daily Journal. and good old Peter Hill finally got us out of the hole. Here it is. We hope you like it.
