Photo! KOHLI f44 7c2ne gow As we looked back over our four years of high school which have passed so rapidly, the WECOMI STAFF chose The Passing of Time as the theme for our annual. The first part of our life is spent in acquiring- an education to build a firm foundation for the future. To get the most out of his education, one needs to economize his time Time is the most precious thing in all the world. Once it is gone, it is gone forever and cannot be replaced. It is like 4 word once spoken and can never be recalled. Since one's way of life depends upon his education, we should strive to make the most of our opportunities. With this in mind, we hope that all those who leave this alma mater will always remember the knowledge gained and the many friendships established between the student body and faculty. We, the co-editors of the 1953 WECOMI, wish to express our appreciation to the hard working staff for being so generous with their time and efforts. We are all very grateful to Mr. Griffith, our faculty adviser for the many hours he has spent in helping us to make this annual a success. Along with the task of compiling this book came a lot of fun and new experiences. Our efforts were directed toward making this volume worthy to be placed along side the many WECOMIS which have preceded it. Sincerely BARBARA BUHRNSEN PAUL LANGREN Co-Edimn Third row: Nordell, Rogers, Shufelt, Boggs, Fulwider, Peters, Burton. Second row: Gerber, Evans, Leighton, Chummers, Mundy, Bailey, Heindl, Dugan. First row: Berthold, Sharp, Eicher, Buhrnsen, Landgren, Hawley, Platz. edicalizw The WECOMI STAFF is pleased to dedicate the 1953 WECOMI to Mr. john Schaffnit. Poised, scholarly, and kind . . . these are certainly the attributes of a good teacher. They are all applicable to Mr. Schaffnit. We particularly appreciate the way he spices the profound stretches of science with understanding and humor. M W 1 X Cf ' xv 7 X. l YS DONALD C. We especially are grateful to Mr. Kohli and Peter Hill for the excellent protographs. Mr. Kohli took most of the picturesethis year. Peter may do more next. Noi pictured RICHARD FACCIN RONALD NORMAN filet? yy L KLM, aflfx ' i!f4'VZ7,LC1 A 1 A , . l'f7 lb lf' Scuia Msfnry As the class to be graduating from Wheaton Community High School in 1953, we tried to think of everything that the principal, Mr. Burger had told us that Freshmen could expect from upper classmen and what would be expected of us. It was all we could do to recollect our thoughts, much less try to keep track of all those books that Fresh- men are known to carry with them. Butch Kuhnen, Byron DeVan, Tom Sharp and Roger Murray launched our new ship of state and we sailed through a wonderful year. As Sophomores we were still students of small importance, but we grinned a little when our football and basketball teams came up with better records than the varsity's. That year Ray Ludwig, Bob Titus, Peggy McNeil and Tom Gauger helped us prepare to take on the responsibility that we would face the next year as Upper Classmen. The junior year was the busiest for us. We went to our first formal, the Senior Girls' Dance, and later in the year we gave and attended our first Prom held in the Baker Hotel. Uncle Fred Flin By was our junior class play, and although it may not have been the best play W.C.H.S. has seen, it can be truthfully said that no one knew what would happen next. Bob Anderson, jerry Pagni, Pat Gerber, and Dick Hamilton did their best to see us through that hectic year, while after a vigorous campaign Dick Kamm, Butch Kuhnen, Grace Zeman and Pat Gerber took over as Student Con- ference officers. Bob Hiebner, Larry Wing, Byron DeVan and Pat Hawley hold the offices for our successful Senior Year. The Senior Girls' Dance staged at the Medinah Country Club was one of the outstanding events of the year. Homecoming this year was a big success with the biggest attraction being the University of Michigan marching band whose performance on our own Grange Field thrilled everyone. Very soon we will be making our own way in the world with the hope and dream that we will contribute something to society and the world about us which future generations will look back upon with awe. The 1952 Little Seven race found the Tigers in a second place tie with West Chicago while the Naperville Redskins were capturing their 13th league championship since the League was founded in 1922. The Tigers, however, have won or tied for the crown 14 times. At a point late in the season, a five team deadlock for first place developed, but an untimely loss as the hands of the Wildcats put a damper on the Bengals hopes. Wheaton's leading scorer was a sophomore, Pete Zouvas, who scored 74 points during the season. His total of 67 points during conference play was second best in the league. Three members of the Bengal squad made the Little Seven All-Star team. They were: Dick Kamm, end, Ed Mauerman, Tackle, and Pete Zouvas, back. Dick Novak and Max Hobbs made the second team. Leading the Wheaton defense throughout most of the season were co-captains Butch Kuhnen and Ed Mauerman, Art Clark, Dave Guy, Ray Luedtke, Dick Novak, Dave Radford and Ed Winkel. Next year's co-captains will be George Craig and Dick Kroehnke. SCORES Wheaton ...... ........ Batavia ....,.... The sophs shared title honors with Dundee, sporting six wins and one loss in conference play and a 7-2 season showing. The year was highlighted by several close games as the cubs came up with the leagues tightest defense. Naperville took a 7-0 trimming at Wheaton's hands, and the sophs also squeezed by We-Go by a 14-6 count and Sycamore by a 7-6 margin. George Fiedler gave the sophs some needed offensive spark as he scored 57 points for the Little Seven scor- ing title. Coaches Colin and Longacre did a great job of rounding the team into a championship outfit, and the promise shown this year should give Wheaton title hopes for the future, SCORES Wheaton ,,,,,, .,.,i,,, 1 3 Glenbard ..... .... 7 Wheaton ,......, ,.,,,. 1 4 Wfest Chicago Wheaton ,,,.,,, ,r,,, 0 Mooseheart Wheaton ,.,..,i, ..,,,, 2 7 Geneva , Wheaton ,r,,,, ...,. 7 Naperville Wheaton ,,,,..,, ,,..,. 7 Sycamore .,,. Hamilton and Brontsema were absent at the time of the picture. ' Spurred on by the efforts of seven very much improved lettermen, the Tiger cagers enjoyed one of the finest seasons ever encountered by a Wheaton team and, in doing so, presented to the fans as well-rounded and sharp shooting a team as has ever been seen on the Wheaton court. Paced by Captain Dick Kamm, Don Anderson, john Brontsema, Dick Kroehnke, Butch Kuhnen, Dick Hamilton and Paul Thurston, the Colinmen mowed down the opposition with amazing consistency, compiling a terrific 14-1 record with four games left on the agenda. A lone loss at the wigwam of the Naperville Redskins was sweetly revenged in one of the most exciting games ever played in Russell Gym. It took the Bengals all of a sudden death overtime to finish their workg but john Brontsema put the game, along with a share of the title, on ice as he netted a one hander, making the final score 56-54. The entire squad played great ball all year. If the same spirit, teamwork, and deter- mination that prevailed during the course of the 1952-53 season is present in next year's squad, W.C.H.S. will have another gold basketball to add to its already crowded trophy case. 'Not to be outdone by their big brothers up in the varsity ranks, the frosh-soph hoopsters came through with a good year themselves, taking the decision in 11 out of 14 games, with another four games still on the waiting list. All of the sophs saw action, the majority of them a good part of the timeg and this depth paid dividends very often. Although they didn't cop the title, they did have a reputation in the Little Seven as a very tough outfit and the record books more than bear out this observation. Mr. Colin shouldn't have any worries about the basketball team- at least for another two years! SCORES Wheaton ......... ........ Wheaton Wheaton ....,..., ........ Wheaton ......... ........ The band also made its first appearance in its new uniforms last fall. In December the Wheaton College Band combined with the W.C.H.S. band to give a Christmas Concert which was quite a success. In April the band made a spring tour through the Southeastern states. It ended the year by presenting a Spring Concert.
