The outstanding project of the year for this class was their reception for the freshmen. The rural decorations included an enormous spider and his web. Brr, l'm glad it wasn't alivel Because they didn't have their Valentine party as they had planned, they gave two hops instead. Many of the sophomore boys were on the heavyweight football team, While other students made the rest of the school take notice of their talents in music and dramatics. To look at their record is to know they were far from it. Did you ever see a conga line at a pep meeting? VVell, that is just what the freshies had when they were in charge of a pep meeting early in the year. That night they had their coming-out party, the Freshman-Sophomore Re- ception. We were all startled when we discovered there were four sets of twins- yes, four, in the freshman class. They are the Bombards, Charles, Durfees, and the Gliddens. Look out for the freshmen, for they're warming up the motors for plenty of action. 75 Lf mums s0 0M 5 moi! 0' x mm 0FF JU Ydxx NX D Y x C Nr rx Cfflbr rg iii:-sushi FIIESIIMAN 0FFlCEllS Ihr u lxlrncr 8.1 rn ML X su And then there were tests' And victories' H. 1- -. Bassett made the tying touchdown by an 80-yard return of a kick-OU, with Keith Brown taking out the last tackler with a beautiful running block. Bassett's excellent punts helped keep the Ribs away from the goal throughout the game. 0 YORK-Inspired by the good showing they made in the Riverside game, the Tigers went on to beat York by a 13 to 0 score. Again Bassett ran wild,' this time on a 70-yard punt return that was good for a touchdown. He then threw a 30-yard pass to lack Brunick, a promising sophomore, for the second one. johnny Durant plowed through the line for the extra point, making the score I3 to 2. '- WEST CHICAGO-The whole team was on the beam in the second half of this game with the whole backheld fFaulkner, Durant, Bassett, and Keyesj making the touch- downs. Captain Faulkner looked especially good on a 70-yard march to the goal that consisted of gains that averaged I0 yards apiece. As it was a wet night, there were many fumbles, with Wheaton taking advantage of most of them. The game ended 24 to 0 with the Tigers in the lead. 0 'GENEVA-The Tigers started the game off with a bang by a trick play that had the Geneva team befuddled. Durant took the kickof, and then the whole team crowded around him as Bassett took the ball and ran 80 yards for a touchdown. The other Wheaton touchdown was made on a pass from Brunick to Bassett, who took it the remaining 25 yards to the goal. These touchdowns were not enough, however, as the final score read! Wheaton 12, Geneva 25. 0 SYCAMORE-The Tigers really had the Sycos baffled by their tricky plays and the excellent strategy of Captain Faulkner, who called them at just the right moments. Bassett made three tallies, two of which were on identically the same kind of play. Brunick made another, from his own 50 yard line, by one of the best broken-field runs of the season, while Duskin ran the hfth one over after taking a pass from Brunick. The score at the end of the game readf Wheaton 31, Sycamore 7. ' ST. CHARLES-After a hard fought battle, in which the line made one of its best showings of the year, the Tigers came off the gridiron in the front end of a 6 to 0 score. The highlight of the game was a double forward pass fBassett to Faulkner to Dunerj that set up the winning touchdown on the 1 yard line. Bassett's punting helped consider- ably in keeping the Saints in their own territory most of the game. 0 NAPERVILLE-Although the team lost this game 24 to 0, it fought hard all the way. The score wasn't so bad as it might seem, as the Indians had one of their best teams in ten years, and also remained undefeated at the close of the season. It was in this game that Keith Brown got an infection in his foot that kept him out of action for the rest of the season. 0 DUNDEE-Outweighed by a much heavier team, the Tigers again took it on the chin by a score of 20 to 7. The boys didn't get started until the last quarter when Faulkner, after receiving a bullet pass from Bassett, plowed the remaining 28 yards for Wheaton's only touchdown. The game was brightened by the fact that the Tigers completed seven out of twelve passes. 0 BATAVIA-The Tigers kept the tradition of always beating Batavia by running up a score of 19 to 7 against a passing attack that often held the Wheaton fans in suspense. The whole team looked good, as it stopped most of Batavia's backs at the line of scrim- mage. Bassett looked exceptionally well by making two of the scores, while Captain Faulkner finished his high school career in a blaze of glory by a 70 yard march to the goal for the other. Ted Hyde, D011 Shaner, and Barton Anson Stage Door The juniors put on a play, She Stoops to Conquer, by Oliver Goldsmith, with all the scenery, costumes, and work that go with making a play such a grand success as this one was. Make-up and costumes were supervised by Miss Leetlle and Miss Miner, respectivelyg and the stage work was under the able direc- tion of Mr. Vaughn. Miss Houts, Miss Cowen, and Miss Wiggins had charge of publicity with Miss Houts also doing the fascinating cover. These lead-:rs were supported hy a willing crew of workers from the junior class. Miss Ruth Bieber was the director of the play with Pat Heitzler as her assistant. Miss Dirks provided music with the string section of the orchestra between the third and fourth acts, before the fifth act, and during the fifth act. The characters were Mrs. Hardcastle, played by Ruth Horsch, Miss Hardcasrle, by Patsy Wilder, Miss Neville, Lois Cook, Dolly, Rhoda Mae Crooks, Mr. Hardcastle, played by Ierry Fellmang Tony, Ted Hyde, Young Marlow, Fraser VVhiteheadg Hastings, Dave Coats, Sir Charles Marlow and Diggery, Wayne Rugglesg Stingo, Bert VVrightg servants by Har- old Watts and Ronald Burkholderg and fellows by Don Shaner and Barton Anson. As you can see there were quite a number of characters, a fact which always helps towards making a play difficult or easy to put on. Last year's play was a comedy entitled Mamzfs Baby Boy by Charles George, which was a huge success. What this year's play is to be remains to be seen. The club is choosing between a comedy and a mystery play, but whatever it is we know it will be excellent. The club is under the direction of Miss Ruth Bieber, who is our speech teacher at W.C.H.S. The ofhcers of Fortune Guild are as follows: Flsa Beck, president, Susie Debes, vice president, Ruth Horsch, secretaryg and Mal- colm McQuiston, treasurer. The aim of the Fortune Guild is to teach its members something about the mechanics of putting on a play. Such things as stage Work, make-up, costumes, prompter, assistant director and gen- erally getting people together to learn their lines, are a few of the more important jobs that have to be completed correctly in order to make a good play. M. C. A., has provided the whole school with at least one extremely' interesting program in the course of a year. The speaker at that program was Mr. Wayne Hanson, Internatioiial Secretary of the Y. M. C. A., who has traveled and lived in 38 countries. Mr. Hanson gave us a very clear view of people our age, particularly in Nazi Germany. As is its custom HI-Y distributed Christmas baskets to needy families in the community. This past year the club has stimulated more interest by holding pot-luck evening meetings. These have been primarily cabinet meetings, but any member of the club is welcome at all times. The sponsors of the organization feel that this has been a very successful year for the club. 51 Q 5. v- K 1 11111 0 IL 1 I XSS 11'I1crt- tI1r scnior Imys c0ttItI 101116 mort prc1I:1t1t11t tt 1t11tI1111' 111 rt Q11 11t11t3,t1 lll N14 t 1 t It IS NX IS 111 uc11111l c11t1t1gI1 to 11':1rrttt1t the 111 1t1o11 of 1 u011tI 1t111L1ttr tI111 optn to tI1t I1t1It st oo I It C1 XS MOIDI I K I L I3 S 111 1111 oI1ict'ti1't- tI1is ycztr I11tsI1cc11 CYLSI tI1c 1011 1 1 1455 III 3, ur 1 1 I 1 t SL 111 L go1tI 111tI I141tI points oI' tI1c,-sc planes.
